Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between age, scrotal circumference, postweaning weight and semen quality in Nellore and Caracu bulls selected for postweaning weight. Data from the andrological evaluation of 836 bulls born between 2000 and 2019, including 583 Nellore animals (Bos indicus) and 253 Caracu animals (Bos taurus), were used. The bulls were divided into categories of age at the time of assessment: category 1 consisted of animals aged 20 to 23 months (22 ± 0.76 months, 518 ± 94.17 kg), category 2 consisted of animals aged 24 to 35 months (30 ± 4.42 months, 679 ± 137.19 kg), and category 3 consisted of animals ≥ 36 months (60 ± 14.12 months, 907 ± 161.73 kg). The statistical model included the effects of breed, age category, date of semen collection, and breed x age category interaction. Heritability estimates for scrotal circumference at 13 months of age (SC1year) and semen quality traits were obtained for the sample of Nellore animals. Most semen quality traits improved with increasing age in both Nellore and Caracu animals. High heritability was observed for SC1year (0.45), while sperm motility, vigor, turbulence, and major, minor and total sperm defects exhibited low heritability (0.11, 0.019, 0.047, 0.017, 0.017 and 0.019, respectively). Spearman correlations of breeding values for postweaning weight (W378) and SC1year with the semen quality traits were low. Nellore and Caracu bulls have similar semen quality that improves with increasing age. In the Nellore breed, the heritability of SC is high, while semen quality traits exhibit low heritability. Selection for higher postweaning weight does not phenotypically affect the semen quality of bulls at breeding age.

Abstract
Sperm 'tail stump' defect was found in ejaculates of a wild boar maintained in captivity. It was in good physical condition, the testes and genital tract were found to be of normal size and consistency. There was no evidence of macroscopic abnormalities at the clinical analysis and at necropsy. The volume and concentration of the semen samples obtained by electroejaculation were lower than normal. The slides examined contained a high level of abnormal spermatozoa (52.7%). The most frequent morphological finding was a droplet-like form attached to the base of the head or a very short stump. The non-stumped spermatozoa had no normal tail but a shortened one. Analysing the histological structure with light microscopy, no ring of spermatozoa was observed lining the lumen of the seminiferous tubules and the characteristically cellular structure was not conserved. The ultrastructural examination evidenced a disorganisation of the normal tubular structure of the flagellum, with lost of regular pattern of the axial bundle of fibrils and the mitochondrial helix. The origin of this abnormality is unknown.

Abstract
Sperm morphology was studied in 302 extensively managed Zebu bulls (aged 1.5-9 years), classified as sound (n=166) or unsound (n=136) for breeding, under field conditions in the dry tropics of Costa Rica. Single semen samples were collected by electro-ejaculation and fixed in formol-saline solution immediately after collection. Sperm morphology was determined in the field on wet smears using a microscope equipped with phase-contrast optics, and further determined in the laboratory on air-dried smears stained with carbol-fuchsin. The frequencies of sperm abnormalities (such as abnormal acrosome, head, neck, mid-piece, tail, and presence of cytoplasmic droplets) were recorded as a percentage of the total number of counted spermatozoa (400 cells). Zebu bulls considered unsound for breeding showed a higher mean prevalence (p < 0.05) of knobbed acrosomes (4.0 versus 0.9%), head defects [specifically, nuclear invaginations and heads with abnormal shapes and sizes (27.6 versus 4.0%)], abnormal tails (11.2 versus 4.7%), and proximal droplets (8.4 versus 1.6%), compared with bulls considered sound for breeding. In these latter bulls, the abnormality most commonly seen was the presence of single bent tails with an entrapped cytoplasmic droplet (3.0 +/- 3.7%). Young Zebu bulls (i.e. bulls under 2 years of age) showed a higher percentage of missing acrosomes, and proximal cytoplasmic droplets, than older sires (12.1 versus 2.4%, and 23.9 versus 3.6%, respectively; p < 0.05), interpreted as an indication of low ejaculation frequency and sexual immaturity, respectively. Bulls with a long scrotum and soft testicular consistency (TC) at palpation showed higher percentages of abnormal sperm heads in the ejaculate than bulls with a normal scrotal length (SL) and a normal TC (32.7 versus 12.8% and 30.7 versus 10.3%, respectively; p < 0.05). In addition, Zebu bulls with a scrotal circumference (SC) < or = 30 cm showed a higher prevalence of proximal cytoplasmic droplets than bulls whose SC was > 30 cm (9.8 versus 2.6%, p < 0.05). A higher mean percentage of abnormally sized and shaped heads, especially undeveloped and narrow at the base, was more frequently found in stained smears than in unstained samples (26.0 versus 9.9%, p < 0.05), which clearly underlines the importance of using both stained and wet smears when assessing sperm head morphology. However, for a quick assessment of sperm morphology under field, tropical conditions, phase-contrast microscopy provides useful information for the spermiogramme evaluation.

Abstract
Major monomorphous teratozoospermia, due to sperm tail structural anomalies, were detected in 42 out of 4231 infertile patients during routine semen analysis. The flagella were very short or absent in 16 cases, shortened with thickness irregularity in 18 cases, and of normal length with diameter anomalies in eight cases. These syndromes were always associated with poor forward motility, while mobility and penetration into human cervical mucus were sometimes impaired only partially. With good sperm smears and an experienced observer, the diagnosis could be made without the need for electron microscopic analysis. All the affected patients were sterile and several syndromes could have been transmitted genetically.

Abstract
Three cases of tail stump sperm defect have been presented in Finnish Ayrshire bulls. The semen samples of the bulls showed markedly reduced number of sperm with almost total absence of tails. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy of the testicular samples revealed the testicular origin of the defect. The anlagen of the implantation fossa, proximal and distal centrioles, connecting piece, nuclear ring, manchette and annulus were demonstrated, but the axoneme formation was completely blocked. A separate population of spermatids showed nuclear bending and was possibly destroyed by the phagocytic activity of Sertoli cells. The pedigree of the bulls supports the concept that the defect is inherited by a single recessive autosomal gene.
