AB initio gradient optimized molecular geometry and conformational analysis of 1,2-propanediol at the 4-21G level

Subtle hydrogen bonds: benchmarking with OH stretching fundamentals of vicinal diols in the gas phase

The theoretical description of spectral signatures for weakly bound hydrogen contacts between alcohol groups is challenging and remains poorly characterised. By combining Raman jet spectroscopy with appropriately scaled harmonic DFT predictions and relaxation path analyses for 16 vicinal diols (ethylene glycol (ethane-1,2-diol), propane-1,2-diol, 3,3,3-trifluoro-propane-1,2-diol, rac-butane-2,3-diol, 2-methyl-propane-1,2-diol, 2-methyl-butane-2,3-diol, pinacol (2,3-dimethyl-butane-2,3-diol), 3-butene-1,2-diol, 1-phenyl-ethane-1,2-diol, trans-cyclobutane-1,2-diol, trans-cyclopentane-1,2-diol, trans-cyclohexane-1,2-diol, trans-cycloheptane-1,2-diol, cis-cyclohexane-1,2-diol, 1-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-cyclopentanol and [1,1'-bicyclopentyl]-1,1'-diol), 69 conformational assignments become possible in a two-tier approach with a 5 diol training and an 11 diol test set. The latter reveals systematic deviations for ring strain and secondary π interactions, but otherwise a remarkably robust correction and correlation model based on hybrid DFT with a minimally augmented triple-zeta basis set is obtained, whereas GGA functionals perform significantly worse. Raw experimental data in the 3560-3700 cm^-1 wavenumber range as well as computed geometries of all conformations invite further vibrational and structural benchmarking at the onset of hydrogen bonding. Beyond this diol-probed threshold, the accurate prediction of hydrogen bond induced shifts of different magnitudes remains one of the challenges for DFT functionals.

1H NMR spectra of ethane-1,2-diol and other vicinal diols in benzene: GIAO/DFT shift calculations

The proton NMR spectra of several 1,2-diols in benzene have been analysed so as to associate each magnetically nonequivalent proton with its chemical shift. The shifts and coupling constants of the OH and methylene protons of ethane-1,2-diol have been determined in a wide range of solvents. The conformer distribution and the proton NMR shifts of these 1,2-diols in benzene have been computed on the basis of density functional theory. The solvent is included using the integral-equation-formalism polarizable continuum model implemented in Gaussian 09. Relative Gibbs energies for all stable conformers are calculated at the Perdew, Burke and Enzerhof (PBE)0/6-311 + G(d,p) level, and shifts are calculated using the gauge-including atomic orbital method with the PBE0/6-311 + G(d,p) geometry but using the cc-pVTZ basis set. Previous calculations on ethane-1,2-diol and propane-1,2-diol have been corrected and extended. New calculations on tert-butylethane-1,2-diol, phenylethane-1,2-diol, butane-2,3-diols (dl and meso) and cyclohexane-1,2-diols (cis and trans) are presented. Overall, the computed NMR shifts are in good agreement with experimental values for the OH protons but remain systematically high for CH protons. Some results based on the Gaussian 03 solvation model are included for comparison.

Stepwise conformational cooling towards a single isomeric state in the four internal rotors system 1,2-butanediol

The present work explores the possibilities of the matrix isolation technique in the structural characterisation of highly flexible molecules. To date, most studies of this type were carried out on molecules with three or less internal degrees of freedom and a few (less than 10) possible conformations. The molecule of 1,2-butanediol has four conformationally relevant three-fold rotational axes, which can result in 81 possible conformations. A detailed theoretical study, at the MP2 and DFT(B3LYP) levels of theory with the 6-311 + + G(d,p) basis set, revealed that more than 20 conformers of 1,2-butanediol have relative energies in a 0-10 kJ mol(-1) range and contribute appreciably to the gas phase equilibrium at room temperature. This fact renders conformational studies of the system extremely difficult under normal conditions. However, the method of matrix isolation permits the reduction of the number of populated conformational states in the experiment at low temperature due to the effect known as conformational cooling: low energy barriers promote the relaxation of the higher energy local minima into more stable structures. As a result of massive conformational cooling occurring upon matrix deposition, only five conformers of 1,2-butanediol were retained in the samples at 10 K. These conformers were identified using a combination of FTIR spectroscopy and extensive theoretical calculations of vibrational spectra. Annealing of the matrices up to 50 K resulted in the extreme case of conformational cooling related with the depopulation of all conformers into the most stable unique structure. The observed transformations were rationalized in terms of barriers to intramolecular rotation.

Intramolecular Hydrogen Bond Interaction in Selected Diols

Solute descriptors characterizing major interactions in solution are accessible based on quantitative structure-property relationships (QSPR). Parameters of such relationships should be additive for functional groups. Because added parameters of monools describing molecular interaction do not meet the experimentally found intermolecular interaction parameters of diols and triols, it is assumed that intramolecular hydrogen bonding is responsible for these deviations. In this paper the intramolecular interactions in several diols are illuminated by IR measurements. Particularly, the influence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding on the absorbances of the OH groups is subject of investigation. Two conclusions can be drawn from the results: The terminal OH groups, which underlie an OH–OH interaction, also change their absorbance intensity in comparison to the free OH band. Secondly, the intermolecular interaction potential is strongly affected by intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The first observation is tentatively quantified as well as the position of the equilibrium between intramolecularly bonded and free diols.

Conformational Study of Monomeric 2,3-Butanediols by Matrix-Isolation Infrared Spectroscopy and DFT Calculations

The FT-IR spectra of two diastereomers of 2,3-butanediol, (R,S) and (S,S), isolated in low-temperature argon and xenon matrixes were studied, allowing the identification of two different conformers for each compound. These conformers were characterized by a +/-gauche arrangement around the O-C-C-O dihedral angle, thus enabling the establishment of a very weak intramolecular hydrogen bond of the O...H-O type. No other forms of these compounds were identified in matrixes, despite the fact that these four conformers had calculated relative energies from 0 to 5.1 kJ mol(-1) and were expected to be thermally populated from 50 to 6% in the gaseous phase of each compound. The nonobservation of additional conformers was explained in terms of low barriers to intramolecular rotation, resulting in the conformational relaxation of the compounds during deposition of the matrixes. The barriers to internal rotation of the OH groups were computed to be less than 4 kJ mol(-1) and are easily overcome in matrixes within the family of conformers with the same heavy atom backbone. The barriers for intramolecular rearrangement of the O-C-C-O dihedral angle in both diastereomers were calculated to range from 20 to 30 kJ mol(-1). Interconversions between the latter conformers were not observed in matrixes, even after annealing up to 65 K. Energy calculations, barriers, and calculated infrared spectra were carried out at the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G theory. Additional MP2/6-311++G calculations of energies and vibrational frequencies were performed on the most relevant conformers. Finally, independent estimations of the hydrogen-bond enthalpy in the studied molecules were also obtained based on theoretical structural data and from vibrational frequencies (using well-established empirical correlations). The obtained values for -DeltaH for both diastereomers of 2,3-butanediol amount to ca. 6-8 kJ mol(-1).

A computational study of microsolvation effect on ethylene glycol by density functional method

This study focuses on the conformational analysis of ethylene glycol-(water)n (n=1-3) complex by using density functional theory method and the basis set 6-311++G*. Different conformers are reported and the basis set superposition error corrected total energy is -306.767 5171, -383.221 3135, and -459.694 1528 for lowest energy conformer with 1, 2, and 3 water molecules, respectively, with corresponding binding energy -7.75, -15.43, and -36.28 kcal/mol. On applying many-body analysis it has been found that relaxation energy, two-body, three-body energy have significant contribution to the binding energy for ethylene glycol-(water)3 complex whereas four-body energies are negligible. The most stable conformers of ethylene glycol-(water)n complex are the cyclic structures in which water molecules bridge between the two hydroxyl group of ethylene glycol.
