Abstract
The upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type liquid-liquid phase separation of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs), 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([Cnmim][TFSI], where n represents the alkyl chain length of the cation, n = 6, 8, 10, and 12) binary solutions with formamide (FA) was examined as a function of temperature and the FA mole fraction xFA. The two-phase region (immiscible region) of the solutions is much larger and expands more with the increase in n, in comparison with the previous [Cnmim][TFSI]-1,4-dioxane (1,4-DIO) systems. An array of spectroscopic techniques, including 1H and 13C NMR and IR combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, was conducted on the present binary systems to clarify the microscopic interactions that contribute to the phase-separation mechanism. The hydrogen-bonding interactions of the imidazolium ring H atoms are more favorable with the O atoms of the FA molecules than with 1,4-DIO molecules, whereas the latter interact more favorably with the alkyl chain of the cation. Upon lowering the temperature, the FA molecules gradually self-aggregate through self-hydrogen bonding to form FA clusters. Concomitantly, clusters of ILs are formed via the electrostatic interaction between the counter ions and the dispersion force among the IL alkyl chains. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments on the [C6mim][TFSI]-FA-d2 and [C8mim][TFSI]-FA-d2 systems revealed, similarly to [Cnmim][TFSI]-1,4-DIO systems, the crossover of the mechanism from the 3D-Ising mechanism around the UCST xFA to the mean-field mechanism at both sides of the mole fraction. Interestingly, the xFA range of the 3D-Ising mechanism for the FA systems is wider compared with the range of the 1,4-DIO systems. In this way, the self-hydrogen bonding among FA molecules most significantly governs the phase equilibria of the [Cnmim][TFSI]-FA systems.

Abstract
Noninvasive techniques such as FT-IR and (1)H NMR spectroscopy have been employed to investigate the solubilization of formamide, FA, and its aqueous solution, FA-water, by sodium 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate, AOT, in heptane or isooctane reverse micelles, respectively. Partially deuterated FA (FADH) was used in the FT-IR experiments and nu(OD), n(ND) were analyzed. Also, the nu(C=O) band of FA was investigated. For AOT, the changes of the SO(3)(-) group's symmetric, nu(s), and asymmetric, nu(a), bands were also studied. The results are showing that FA is interacting strongly with the Na+ counterions of the surfactant through electrostatic interactions maintaining their hydrogen bond network present in the FA bulk. Accordingly, partially deuterated FA is "frozen" inside the aggregates and it is possible to detect, by FT-IR technique, the cis and trans isomers. Curve fitting of the nu(OD) (in the FA-water mixture) band requires use of two peaks because the band is asymmetric, not because the solubilizate molecules are present in layers of different structure. The chemical shifts of the (1)H bound to N and C of FA were studied by (1)H NMR. The comparison of the chemical shift of AOT in reverse micelles with FA and the FA-water mixture in the polar core of the aggregate shows that there is a strong preferential solvation of Na+ by FA (through electrostatic interaction) and the AOT's sulfonate group by water (through hydrogen bond interaction).

Abstract
IR studies were preformed to determine possible transition metal ion binding sites of penicillin, the observed changes in spectral position and shape of characteristic IR bands of cloxacillin in the presence of transition metal ions (both in solutions and in the solid state) indicate formation of M-L complexes with engagement of -COO- and/or -CONH- functional groups. The small shift of vC=O towards higher frequencies rules out direct M-L interaction via beta-lactam carbonyl. PM3 calculations on simple model compounds (substituted formamide, cyclic ketones, lactams and substituted monocyclic beta-lactams) have been performed. All structures were fully optimized and the calculated bond lengths, angles, heats of formation and C=O stretching frequencies were discussed to determine the beta-lactam binding sites and to explain its susceptibility towards nucleophilic attack (hydrolysis in vitro) and biological activity. The relative changes of calculated values were critically compared with available experimental data and same correlation between structural parameters and in vivo activity was shown.
