Aerobic nitrogen fixation during the biodegradation of lignocellulosic wastes

Succession of diazotroph community and functional gene response to inoculating swine manure compost with a lignocellulose-degrading consortium

Diazotroph community contributes to the nitrogen mass and improves the agronomic quality of composting product, but their responses to microbial inoculation during composting are unclear. In this study, the lignocellulose-degrading consortium was inoculated at different levels (0%: CK (control) and 10%: T) to investigate their effects on the variations in the diazotroph community and functional gene during composting. In the later composting phase, the nifH gene copy number was 17.50-25.28% higher in T than CK. The nitrogenase abundance in CK and T were 0.042% and 0.046% in composting product, respectively. Network analysis indicated that inoculation affected the co-occurrence patterns of the diazotroph community and changed the keystone species composition. Partial least-squares path modeling showed that available carbon sources and the succession of the diazotroph community mainly determined the increased abundance of nifH gene. Microbial inoculation stimulated the diazotrophs activities, and was conducive to the nitrogen production in composting product.

Eliminating toxic compounds by composting olive mill wastewater-straw mixtures

The present work studies the changes occurring in organic matter, phenols and biotoxicity on composting olive mill wastewater with barley straw. The total organic matter decreased, a drop of 25% was reached after the stabilization phase and 52% at the end of the maturation phase. Degradation of the phenols reached 54% and 95%, respectively, after these periods. The toxicity of the water extract, evaluated by the Photobacterium phosphoreum fluorescence, decreased to disappear after only 2 months of composting. This trend was confirmed by the tight correlation between the physico-chemical and toxicity parameters, indicating that the degradation of organic matter leads to a strong reduction of the C/N ratio and of toxicity. The results obtained indicate a normal process of humification occurring during the composting of the formerly highly toxic olive mill wastewater-straw mixture and resulting in a product, which has good agricultural properties as organic fertilizer.

Effects of the forced ventilation on composting of a solid olive-mill by-product ("alperujo") managed by mechanical turning

The evaluation of the most suitable aeration technology for olive-mill by-product "alperujo" (AL) composting was carried out by using two identical piles prepared by mixing AL with a bulking agent (fresh cow bedding) and a mature compost (as inoculant). Forced ventilation was employed in conjunction with mechanical turning in one of the piles, whereas only mechanical turning was used in the other pile. These two treatment methods were evaluated by assessing process efficiency and end-product quality. The results show that the composting process was completed in less time when forced ventilation was coupled with mechanical turning. A slight delay in the evolution of pH, C/N ratio, and biodegradation of fats and organic matter was observed when only turning was employed. However, the recommended method for composting AL was mechanical turning without forced ventilation since the composition of the end-product in this case was comparable to the composted AL using forced ventilation coupled with mechanical turning. Furthermore, there were substantial economic savings by selecting mechanical turning alone, which included capital costs for equipment.
