Concomitant lingual thyroid and squamous carcinoma of the base of the tongue: report of a case

[Vesicular carcinoma in lingual thyroid: a rare case]

La thyroïde linguale est secondaire à l'absence de migration de l'ébauche thyroïdienne. Cette dernière se développe sur place, c'est-à-dire au niveau du foramen caecum. Elle peut représenter le seul tissu thyroïdien retrouvé, ou être en association avec une thyroïde normale. La survenue d'un carcinome sur une thyroïde linguale constitue une situation exceptionnelle avec seulement une trentaine de cas décrits dans la littérature. Nous rapportons a travers notre observation un cas de carcinome vésiculaire survenu sur thyroïdien lingual.

Carcinome vesiculo-papillaire sur thyroïde linguale

OBJECTIVES

The management of diagnosis, treatment and outcome of malignant neoplasm arising in a lingual thyroid.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We report a case of papillary-follicular carcinoma arising in a lingual thyroid.

RESULTS

Lingual carcinoma causes dysphagia and pain due to oropharyngeal obstruction. Surgical pharyngotomy with a trans-hyoid approach provides good access to the lesions. Therefore, the eutopic thyroid was present, in pretracheal position, without neoplastic proliferation.

CONCLUSIONS

Carcinoma arising in lingual thyroid is an extreme rare entity. Its diagnosis is histologic. Its treatment is surgical associated with radio-iodine therapy.

Papillary carcinoma arising in lingual thyroid

Lingual thyroid is a well-known developmental abnormality, malignant transformation of which is rare. This is a case report of a papillary carcinoma located in ectopic lingual thyroid tissue, in a 28-year-old white male. A search of the literature revealed only one more such report.
