Abstract
In this study, the performance of the doubles-corrected higher random-phase approximation [HRPA(D)] has been investigated in calculations of nuclear magnetic resonance spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) for 58 molecules with the experimental values used as the reference values. HRPA(D) is an approximation to the second-order polarization propagator approximation (SOPPA) and is, therefore, computationally less expensive than SOPPA. HRPA(D) performs comparable and sometimes even better than SOPPA, and therefore, when calculating SSCCs, it should be considered as an alternative to SOPPA. Furthermore, it was investigated whether a coupled-cluster singles, doubles and perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] or Møller-Plesset second order (MP2) geometry optimization was optimal for a SOPPA and a HRPA(D) SSCC calculation for eight smaller molecules. CCSD(T) is the optimal geometry optimization for the SOPPA calculation, and MP2 was optimal for HRPA(D) SSCC calculations.

Abstract
Traditional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) calculations typically treat systems with a Born-Oppenheimer-derived electronic wave function that is solved for a fixed nuclear geometry. One can numerically account for this neglected nuclear motion by averaging over property values for all nuclear geometries with a vibrational wave function and adding this expectation value as a correction to an equilibrium geometry property value. Presented are benchmark coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) vibrational corrections to spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) computed at the level of vibrational second-order perturbation theory (VPT2) using the vibrational averaging driver of the CFOUR program. As CCSD calculations of vibrational corrections are very costly, cheaper electronic structure methods are explored via a newly developed Python vibrational averaging program within the Dalton Project. Namely, results obtained with the second-order polarization propagator approximation (SOPPA) and density functional theory (DFT) with the B3LYP and PBE0 exchange-correlation functionals are compared to the benchmark CCSD//CCSD(T) and experimental values. CCSD//CCSD(T) corrections are also combined with literature CC3 equilibrium geometry values to form the highest-order vibrationally corrected values available (i.e., CC3//CCSD(T) + CCSD//CCSD(T)). CCSD//CCSD(T) statistics showed favorable statistics in comparison to experimental values, albeit at an unfavorably high computational cost. A cheaper CCSD//CCSD(T) + B3LYP method showed quite similar mean absolute deviation (MAD) values as CCSD//CCSD(T), concluding that CCSD//CCSD(T) + B3LYP is optimal in terms of cost and accuracy. With reference to experimental values, a vibrational correction was not worth the cost for all of the other methods tested. Finally, deviation statistics showed that CC3//CCSD(T) + CCSD//CCSD(T) vibrational-corrected equilibrium values deteriorated in comparison to CCSD//CCSD(T) attributed to the use of a smaller basis set or lack of solvation effects for the CC3 equilibrium calculations.

Abstract
We present new compact pecJ-n (n = 1, 2) basis sets for the selenium atom developed for the quantum-chemical calculations of NMR spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) involving selenium nuclei. These basis sets were obtained at the second order polarization propagator approximation with coupled cluster singles and doubles amplitudes (SOPPA(CCSD)) level with the property-energy consistent (PEC) method, which was introduced in our previous papers. The existing SSCC-oriented selenium basis sets are rather large in size, while the PEC method gives more compact basis sets that are capable of providing accuracy comparable to that reached using the property-oriented basis sets of larger sizes generated with a standard even-tempered technique. This is due to the fact that the PEC method is very different in its essence from the even-tempered approaches. It generates new exponents through the total optimization of angular spaces of trial basis sets with respect to the property under consideration and the total molecular energy. New basis sets were tested on the coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) calculations of SSCCs involving selenium in the representative series of molecules, taking into account relativistic, solvent, and vibrational corrections. The comparison with the experiment showed that the accuracy of the results obtained with the pecJ-2 basis set is almost the same as that provided by a significantly larger basis set, aug-cc-pVTZ-J, while that achieved with a very compact pecJ-1 basis set is only slightly inferior to the accuracy provided by the former.

Abstract
The aug-cc-pVTZ-J basis set family is extended to include the fourth-row p-block elements Ga, Ge, As, Se, and Br. We use the established approach outlined by Sauer and coworkers (J. Chem. Phys. 115, 1324 [2001], J. Chem. Phys. 133, 054308 [2010], J. Chem. Theory Comput. 7, 4070 [2011], and J. Chem. Theory Comput. 7, 4077 [2011]) where the completely uncontracted aug-cc-pVTZ basis set is saturated with tight s-, p-, d-, and f-functions to form the aug-cc-pVTZ-Juc basis set for the tested elements. The saturation is carried out on the simplest hydrides possible for the tested elements GaH, GeH4 , AsH3 , H2 Se, and HBr until an improvement is less than 0.01% for all s-, p-, and d-functions added. f-Functions are added to an improvement less than or equal to 1.0% due to the computational expense these functions add. The saturated aug-cc-pVTZ-Juc (26s16p12d5f) is then recontracted using the molecular orbital coefficients from self-consistent field calculations on the simple hydrides to improve computational efficiency. During contraction of the basis set, we observe that the linear hydrogen bromide molecule has a slower convergence than the other tested molecules which sets a limit on the accuracy obtained. All calculations with the contracted aug-cc-pVTZ-J [17s10p7d5f] gives results that are within 1.0% of the uncontracted results at considerable computational savings.

Abstract
The multi-configurational short-range (sr) density functional theory has been extended to the calculation of indirect spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The performance of the new method is compared to Kohn-Sham density functional theory and the ab initio complete active space self-consistent field for a selected set of molecules with good reference values. Two density functionals have been considered, the local density approximation srLDA and srPBE from the GGA class of functionals. All srDFT calculations are of Hartree-Fock-type HF-srDFT or complete active space-type CAS-srDFT. In all cases, the calculated SSCC values are of the same quality for srLDA and srPBE functionals, suggesting that one should use the computationally cost-effective srLDA functionals in applications. For all the calculated SSCCs in organic compounds, the best choice is HF-srDFT; the more expensive CAS-srDFT does not provide better values for these single-reference molecules. Fluorine is a challenge; in particular, the FF, FC, and FO couplings have much higher statistical errors than the rest. For SSCCs involving fluorine and a metal atom CAS-srDFT with singlet, generalized Tamm-Dancoff approximation is needed to get good SSCC values although the reference ground state is not a multi-reference case. For VF6 -1, all other considered models fail blatantly.

Abstract
This paper presents a new method of generating property-energy consistent (PEC) basis sets that can be applied to any arbitrary molecular property. The PEC method generates a basis set that is optimized for the molecular property under interest, providing the least possible total molecular energy. The main algorithm of the PEC approach involves Monte Carlo simulations to generate random exponents in the predetermined range. In this work, the PEC method is introduced in the example of generation of new pecJ-n (n = 1, 2) basis sets suited for high-quality correlated calculations of indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling constants involving the most popular NMR-active nuclei: 1H, 13C, 15N, and 19F.

Abstract
NMR shielding and spin-spin coupling constants of cis and trans isomers of FNNF have been determined to near-quantitative accuracy from ab initio calculations. The FNNF system, containing multiple N-F bonds and fluorine atoms, provides a severe test of computational methods. Coupled-cluster methods were used with large basis sets and complete basis set (CBS) extrapolations of the equilibrium geometry results, with vibrational and relativistic corrections. Shielding constants were calculated with basis sets as large as aug-cc-pCV7Z, together with coupled-cluster expansions up to CCSDT, at the all-electron CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pCVQZ optimized geometries. Spin-spin coupling constants have been determined with specialized versions of the correlation consistent basis sets ccJ-pVXZ, further augmented with diffuse functions. All-electron coupled-cluster methods up to CC3 were applied in these calculations. The results of this work highlight the application of state-of-the-art theoretical techniques, and provide the most accurate NMR properties of FNNF to date, which can serve to guide and supplement NMR experimentation.

Abstract
In this article, the RPA(D) and HRPA(D) models for the calculation of linear response functions are presented. The performance of the new RPA(D) and HRPA(D) models is compared to the performance of the established RPA, HRPA, and SOPPA models in calculations of indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling constants using the CCSD model as a reference. The doubles correction offers a significant improvement on both the RPA and HRPA models; however, the improvement is more dramatic in the case of the RPA model. For all coupling types investigated in this study, the results obtained using the HRPA(D) model are comparable in accuracy to those given by the SOPPA model, while requiring between 30% and 90% of the calculation time needed for SOPPA. The RPA(D) model, while of slightly lower accuracy compared to the CCSD model than HRPA(D), offered calculation times of only approximately 25% of those required for SOPPA for all the investigated molecules. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
The natural J-coupling (NJC) method is applied to analyze the Fermi contact contribution of the NMR spin-spin coupling constant decomposing this contribution in terms of natural localized molecular orbitals. We investigated the influence of the basis set on the NJC analysis for the formyl group coupling constant (1 J CHf) of benzaldehyde derivatives. NJC and other NBO analyses, like steric and natural Coulombic energy, were chosen to explain the influence of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups on 1 J CHf for some substituted benzaldehydes (Me, OH, OMe, F, Cl, Br, I, and NO2). For the ortho derivatives, electronegative substituents near the C-Hf bond increase the 1 J CHf coupling. This effect could be related to an increase in formyl carbon s character and changes in the carbon and hydrogen natural charges. This indicates that the substituents in ortho have a proximity effect on 1 J CHf coupling mainly of electrostatic origin instead of the expected hyperconjugative interactions.

Abstract
We present the first analytical implementation of CC3 second derivatives using the spin-unrestricted approach. This allows, for the first time, the calculation of nuclear spin-spin coupling constants (SSCC) relevant to NMR spectroscopy at the CC3 level of theory in a fully analytical manner. CC3 results for the SSCCs of a number of small molecules and their fluorine substituted derivatives are compared with the corresponding coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) results obtained using specialized basis sets. For one-bond couplings the change when going from CCSD to CC3 is typically 1-3%, but much higher corrections were found for 1JCN in FCN, 15.7%, and 1JOF in OF2, 6.4%. The changes vary significantly in the case of multibond couplings, with differences of up to 10%, and even 13.6% for 3JFH in fluoroacetylene. Calculations at the coupled cluster singles, doubles, and triples (CCSDT) level indicate that the most important contributions arising from connected triple excitations in the coupled cluster expansion are accounted for at the CC3 level. Thus, we believe that the CC3 method will become the standard approach for the calculation of reference values of nuclear spin-spin coupling constants.

Abstract
The dependence of the magnitude and sign of (3)JHFF on the bond angle in fluoro-cycloalkene compounds is evaluated by electronic structure calculations using different levels of theory, viz. DFT, SOPPA(CCSD) and SOPPA(CC2). Localized molecular orbital contributions to (3)JHFF are analyzed to assess which orbitals are responsible for (3)JHFF and which are the most important coupling transmission mechanisms for each compound. Fluoro-ethylene is used as a model system to evaluate the dependence of the (3)JHFF coupling constant on the angle between the σCα-F and σCα'-HF vectors. Through-space and hyperconjugative transmission pathways and ring strain are identified as responsible for the opposite trend between (3)JHFF and bond angle, and for the negative signs obtained for the two molecules, respectively. One of the fluorine lone pairs, σCα'-HF, σCα-F, σCα'-Cβ' bonding orbitals and the σ*Cα-F antibonding orbital are involved in the J-coupling pathways, according to analyses of pairwise-steric and hyperconjugative energies.

Abstract
We present a modification of the small and popular Pople basis sets, 6-31G and 6-311G, for density functional theory calculations of Fermi contact dominated NMR indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling constants. These new basis sets, 6-31G-J and 6-311G-J, contain twice the number of contracted s-type functions but the same number of contracted p-type functions as the original Pople basis set. For our test set of 12 one-, two- and three-bond coupling constants, the new basis sets augmented with the standard diffuse and polarization functions, i.e., the 6-31+G*-J and 6-311++G**-J basis sets, lead to a maximum deviation of 5 and 2 Hz, respectively, compared to results obtained with the 6 or more times larger aug-pcJ-4 basis set. In correlated wave function calculations using the second-order polarization propagator approximation, the deviations with respect to the aug-ccJ-pVQZ basis set are 8 and 3 Hz and thus slightly larger.

Abstract
The aug-cc-pVTZ-J series of basis sets for indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling constants has been extended to the atoms B, Al, Si, P, and Cl. The basis sets were obtained according to the scheme previously described by Provasi et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 115, 1324 (2001)]. First, the completely uncontracted correlation consistent aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets were extended with four tight s and three tight d functions. Second, the s and p basis functions were contracted with the molecular orbital coefficients of self-consistent-field calculations performed with the uncontracted basis sets on the simplest hydrides of each atom. As a first illustration, we have calculated the one-bond indirect spin-spin coupling constants in BH(4)(-), BF, AlH, AlF, SiH(4), SiF(4), PH(3), PF(3), H(2)S, SF(6), HCl, and ClF at the level of density functional theory using the Becke three parameter Lee-Yang-Parr and the second order polarization propagator approximation with coupled cluster singles and doubles amplitudes.

Abstract
A 2hJNN intermolecular spin-spin coupling constant (SSCC) of 10.2±0.4 Hz has been measured for the powdered tetrachlorogallate salt of pyridinium solvated by pyridine (pyridine-H+⋯pyridine cation 3). Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level reproduced this value and two others reported in the literature for 2hJ intermolecular SSCCs, which were measured for complexes in solution.

Abstract
Calculations of (1)J(NH), (1h)J(NH) and (2h)J(NN) spin-spin coupling constants of 27 complexes presenting N-H...N hydrogen bonds have allowed to analyze these through hydrogen-bond coupling as a function of the hybridization of both nitrogen atoms and the charge (+1, 0, - 1) of the complex. The main conclusions are that the hybridization of N atom of the hydrogen bond donor is much more important than that of the hydrogen bond acceptor. Positive and negative charges (cationic and anionic complexes) exert opposite effects while the effect of the transition states 'proton-in-the-middle' is considerable.

Abstract
A theoretical study of the complexes formed by the N2F cation (fluorodiazonium ion) and a series of small molecules containing nitrogen atoms have been carried out at the MP2 computational level. In addition, fluorine transfer has been studied. The electron density, NMR shielding and indirect coupling constants of the complexes have been evaluated. The covalent or halogen bonding characteristics of the N...F interactions observed in the complexes are defined by the interatomic distance. It has been determined that the limiting value is 1.6 A.

Abstract
Stereochemical dependences of vicinal fluorine-fluorine nuclear magnetic resonance coupling constants (3JFF) have been studied with the multiconfigurational self-consistent field in the restricted active space approach, with the second-order polarization propagator approximation (SOPPA), and with density functional theory. The SOPPA results show the best overall agreement with experimental couplings. The relationship with the dihedral angle between the coupled fluorines has been studied by Fourier analysis, the result is very different from that of proton-proton couplings. The Fourier coefficients do not resemble those of a typical Karplus equation. The four nonrelativistic contributions to the coupling constants of 1,2-difluoroethane configurations have been studied separately showing that up to six Fourier coefficients are required to reproduce the calculated values satisfactorily. Comparison with Fourier coefficients for matching hydrogen fluoride dimer configurations suggests that the higher order Fourier coefficients (Cn> or =3) originate mainly from through-space Fermi contact interaction. The through-space interaction is the main reason 3JFF do not follow the Karplus equation.

Abstract
The electronic origin of intermolecular (2h)J(A,D) and (1h)J(A,H) couplings is discussed by means of the CLOPPA-IPPP approach in several model complexes with D-H...A hydrogen bonds. It is found that the origin of these couplings is mainly due to the interaction between the acceptor sigma lone pair and vacant molecular orbitals localized in the D-H...A moiety, regardless of the donor and acceptor nuclei. The problem of the larger absolute value of (2h)J(A,D) compared to (1h)J(A,H) is also addressed.
