Abstract
The excessive and uncontrolled application of antibiotics in the fish farming industry, coupled with a lack of health monitoring and medication practices, is a driving force behind the escalating development of antimicrobial resistance. The present study assessed and compared qualitative field diffusion (QFD) and disk diffusion (DD) assays for the detection of antimicrobial residues (ARs) in diverse freshwater aquaculture fish. A total of 380 freshwater aquaculture fish (160 fresh and 180 frozen) samples were systematically collected between January and June 2021 from various retail stores located in Erbil Governorate, Iraq. Based on QFDA results, overall, ARs were detected (52; 15.3%) at a relatively lower frequency with comparatively higher frequency (21; 31.1%) in fresh than (31; 17.2%) frozen fish samples. On the other hand, DDA also revealed a comparable (45; 13.2%) prevalence rate of ARs. However, a low detection was observed more in fresh (17; 10.6%) than frozen (28; 15.6%) fish samples. Moreover, no statistically significant disparity (χ2 = 0.069; p = 0.79) between two assays and types of fish was recorded. In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that detecting a considerable frequency of ARs in these fish samples raises concerns about potential threats to public health. This underscores the necessity for understanding antibiotic application in aquaculture and its potential connection to antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens. Such comprehension is pivotal for formulating and implementing effective control and farm management strategies to address this pressing issue.

Abstract
Abstract
This study provides insight into the development and validation of the simple, rapid and sensitive method of Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry for determining the residues of dexamethasone in bovine milk. The maximum residue limit for dexamethasone in bovine milk is 0.3 ng/ml−1. Chromatographic separation was achieved on an Agilent Proshell 120 SB:C18 (2.7µm 100x3.0 mm) column. The bovine milk was extracted with ethyl acetate, and the evaporated elution was dissolved with hexane, water and methanol, and analyzed by the LC-MS/MS method. The mobile phase A was a solution of 5 Mm ammonium formate in water, while the mobile phase B was 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile. The calibration graphics were prepared within the range of 0.15–0.6 ng/ml−1, and a successful linearity was achieved (r ≥0.999). The limit of detection was 0.016 ng/ml−1. The decision limit (CCα) and detection capability (CCβ) were 0.34 and 0.38 ng/ml−1, respectively.

Abstract
The validity of two microbiological methods: Tube (Premi® Test) and Plate (Three Plate Test) Test for the detection of oxytetracycline (OTC) in poultry was done using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) immunoassay as gold standard. OTC was administered to two groups of birds: intramuscular drug administration (group A) and oral drug administration (group B). Liver and muscle tissue samples from birds in both groups were tested for the presence of OTCwith the Four Plate Test (FPT), Premi® Test and ELISA. For muscle tissues, FPT had a sensitivity of 71.4% and 60%, while Premi® Test had a sensitivity of 57% and 20% for intramuscular and orally treated birds, respectively. For the liver tissues, FPT had 87.5% and 83.5% while Premi® Test had 37.5% and 16.6% sensitivity for intramuscular and orally treated birds, respectively. The two tests had 100% specificity for OTC in tissues of birds from both treatment groups. There is a strong correlation (r = 0.93) between the inhibition zones of FPT and ELISA concentrations in OTC detection. FPT, therefore, has a higher sensitivity for OTC than Premi® Test.

Abstract
Eggs belong to the most frequently consumed products of animal origin worldwide, and therefore the safety of eggs is a substantiated issue. Conventional poultry rearing involves the use of antimicrobials added to their feed or potable water particularly for disease treatment, however, in some countries also for the prevention of diseases, promotion of growth and better utilisation of the feed. Thus, effective control of residues of such substances in eggs is very important for the protection of the public health. The aim of this study was to detect the potential presence of antimicrobial residues in fresh hen eggs using commercially available rapid screening methods (Premi®Test and EXP Ampulle test) and compare the results of both of these tests. We examined 22 samples randomly selected from among 66 samples purchased in 11 European countries. We respected the procedures as supplied by the manufacturers of the tests together with their respective test kits. The examination of eggs by the Premi®Test did not detect the presence of antimicrobial residues in the samples, while the EXP Ampulle test provided 8 positive and 6 dubious results. Our results allowed us to conclude that the EXP Ampulle appears to be more sensitive and allows one to carry out more effective control of the presence of antimicrobial residues in hen eggs intended for human consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Residues of antimicrobials in food have received much attention in recent years because of growing food safety and public health concerns. Their presence in food of animal origin constitutes socioeconomic challenges in international trade in animal and animal products. The major public health significances of antimicrobial residues include the development of antimicrobial drug resistance, hypersensitivity reaction, carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, teratogenicity, bone marrow depression, and disruption of normal intestinal flora. Indiscriminate use of antimicrobials in aquaculture resulting in occurrence of residues in aquaculture products and associated harmful health effects in humans requires control measures to ensure consumer protection. MAIN BODY This article focuses on factors contributing to the presence of antimicrobial residues in aquaculture products and their implications on consumers' safety. Regulatory actions aimed at prudent use of veterinary drugs in food-producing animals with emphasis on aquaculture for safe and wholesome food production are also reviewed. CONCLUSION Prudent use of antibiotics in aquaculture under veterinary supervision is critical in ensuring safety of aquaculture products. Good animal husbandry practices as well as the use of alternatives to antibiotics such as vaccination, probiotics, phage therapy, and essential oils are recommended panaceas to reducing the use of antimicrobial residues in aquaculture and consequent food safety effects.

Abstract
In this work, a novel electrochemical sensor was fabricated for determination of amoxicillin in bovine milk samples by decoration of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using ethylenediamine (en) as a cross linker (AuNPs/en-MWCNTs). The constructed nanocomposite was homogenized in dimethylformamide and drop casted on screen printed electrode. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and cyclic voltammetry were used to characterize the synthesized nanocomposites. The results show that the synthesized nanocomposites induced a remarkable synergetic effect for the oxidation of amoxicillin. Effect of some parameters, including pH, buffer, scan rate, accumulation potential, accumulation time and amount of casted nanocomposites, on the sensitivity of fabricated sensor were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, there was two linear calibration ranges from 0.2-10 µM and 10-30 µM with equations of Ipa (µA) = 2.88C (µM) + 1.2017; r = 0.9939 and Ipa (µA) = 0.88C (µM) + 22.97; r = 0.9973, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were calculated as 0.015 µM and 0.149 µM, respectively. The fabricated electrochemical sensor was successfully applied for determination of Amoxicillin in bovine milk samples and all results compared with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) standard method.

Abstract
A selective and rapid method has been developed to determine, simultaneously, 38 veterinary antibiotic residues in raw milk by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). One milliliter of raw milk was diluted with 0.5 mL water and 3 mL acetonitrile, then purified using an Oasis HLB cartridge. The eluates were evaporated by nitrogen drying and then reconstituted to 4 mL with water/acetonitrile (8:1) before being injected into the UPLC-MS/MS system. The results indicated recoveries of 68-118% for 14 β-lactams, 79-118% for eight quinolones, 71-106% for eight sulfonamides, 76-116% for four tetracyclines, 78-106% for three macrolides, and 88-103% for one lincosamides, with coefficients of variation less than 15% for intraday and interday precisions. The limit of quantification for all antibiotics was 0.03-10 μg kg(-1). This methodology was then applied to field-collected real raw milk samples and trace levels of four antibiotics were detected.

Abstract
Antibiotics are medicine's leading asset for fighting microbial infection, which is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. However, the misuse of antibiotics has led to the rapid spread of antibiotic resistance among bacteria and the development of multiple resistant pathogens. Therefore, antibiotics are rapidly losing their antimicrobial value. The use of antibiotics in food production animals is strictly controlled by the European Union (EU). Veterinary use is regulated to prevent the spread of resistance. EU legislation establishes maximum residue limits for veterinary medicinal products in foodstuffs of animal origin and enforces the establishment and execution of national monitoring plans. Among samples selected for monitoring, suspected noncompliant samples are screened and then subjected to confirmatory analysis to establish the identity and concentration of the contaminant. Screening methods for antibiotic residues are typically based on microbiological growth inhibition, whereas physico-chemical methods are used for confirmatory analysis. This chapter discusses biosensors, especially whole-cell based biosensors, as emerging screening methods for antibiotic residues. Whole-cell biosensors can offer highly sensitive and specific detection of residues. Applications demonstrating quantitative analysis and specific analyte identification further improve their potential as screening methods.

A luminescence method was developed to screen residues of enrofloxacin (ENRO) and its metabolite, ciprofloxacin (CIPRO), in swine liver. Target analytes were extracted in acetonitrile/1.5% trifluoroacetic acid/NaCl, cleaned up by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME), and finally detected by terbium-sensitized luminescence (TSL) using a time-resolved luminescence photometer. CIPRO yielded slightly lower TSL response than ENRO, so a common threshold was derived from CIPRO and applied to both fluoroquinolones. Among 37 samples randomly spiked with CIPRO or ENRO up to 1 μg/g, all 19 samples spiked above the 500 ng/g tolerance were correctly screened as positive with no false negatives, but 3 of 18 samples spiked below 500 ng/g were classified as positive. This method minimized the use of chlorinated solvents and significantly improved sample throughput.

Abstract
Danofloxacin (DANO) residue in bovine muscle was screened at 200 ng/g by terbium-sensitized luminescence (TSL) directly measured on 10 × 6 mm C18 sorbent strips. The analyte was first adsorbed on sorbent surface by immersion in defatted homogenates. After reagent application and desiccation, TSL was directly measured on sorbent surfaces at λ(ex) = 273 nm and λ(em) = 546 nm. The luminescence intensity was linearly dependent on DANO concentration in the 0-1000 ng/g range (R(2) = 0.9967). A threshold was established at x(200) - 3σ(200), where x(200) and σ(200) are the mean and standard deviation, respectively, of the DANO signals at 200 ng/g. Among 48 blind samples randomly fortified at 0-1000 ng/g, 45 were screened correctly and 3 negative samples were presumed positive. This simple screening protocol has the potential to significantly reduce sample numbers and hence improve sample throughput and save assay costs.

Abstract
A multiclass method for the analysis of residues, in egg matrices, of 41 antimicrobial agents belonging to seven families (sulfonamides, diaminopyridine derivates, quinolones, tetracyclines, macrolides, penicillins and lincosamides) was developed and validated according to the requirements of European Commission Decision 2002/657. Compounds were extracted with a pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) technique using a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile and a succinic acid buffer (pH 6.0) at 70 °C. As this resulted in clear extracts, no further clean-up was necessary. Analytes were determined by ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPL-MS/MS) in a chromatographic run of 13 min. Calibration was carried out with spiked blank samples subjected to the entire analytical procedure. Five compounds, two of them isotopically labelled, were used as internal standards. Most analytes were quantified with errors below 10%. Precision in terms of reproducibility standard deviation was between 10% and 20% in most cases. CCα values were in the range 0.5-3.8 μg kg⁻¹ for the non-authorized compounds. The proposed method would enable an experienced analyst to process about 25 samples per day.

Abstract
Bioautography is a microbial detection method hyphenated with planar chromatography techniques. It is based mainly on antimicrobial or antifungal properties of analyzed substances. The review discusses three versions of bioautography, i.e. contact, immersion and direct bioautography. The more concern is given to the last one. Many applications are quoted, not only for testing various groups of compounds, but also for investigating biochemical processes and factors influencing bacterial growth. Additionally, related methods, which can be included into direct bioautography, are discussed. The most promising among them seems to be TLC-bioluminescence screening.

Abstract
O crescimento nacional da produção de carne de coelhos necessita de maior conhecimento sobre características da carne, bem como o efeito de um processo que permita sua maior conservação. Os cortes congelados da carne de coelho: coxa, pernil e lombo, tratados com dois tipos de antibióticos, norfloxacina e ciprofloxacina, foram irradiados nas doses de 0, 3 e 6 kGy e determinados os teores de ferro heme e não heme dos cortes. As doses de irradiação empregadas foram influentes nos teores de ferro heme e não heme, sendo que a dose de 3 kGy foi a que apresentou os maiores valores, independente do tipo de antibiótico utilizado. Para o ferro heme o antibiótico norfloxacina apresentou os maiores valores e para o ferro não heme os maiores valores foram notados para o antibiótico ciprofloxacina.

Abstract
This study compared four extraction methods for the simultaneous determination of tetracyclines, macrolides, quinolones, sulphonamides and anthelmintics (including benzimidazoles and avermectins) in eggs by ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Solvent extraction, solid-phase extraction (SPE), matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) and modified QuEChERS procedure were compared in terms of recovery and number of veterinary drugs extracted. The solvent extraction procedure with a clean-up step provided better results than the other tested procedures. The QuEChERS procedure was simpler and faster, but extracted fewer compounds than solvent extraction. MSPD did not extract tetracyclines and quinolones, whereas macrolides and tetracyclines were not extracted when SPE was applied. The solvent extraction procedure was validated, obtaining recoveries ranging from 60% (sulfaquinoxaline) to 119% (levamisole) with repeatability values (expressed as relative standard deviations, RSDs) lower than 20% at two concentration levels (10 and 100 microg kg(-1)), except for erythromycin, emamectin and ivermectin that showed RSD values close to 25% at 10 microg kg(-1). Limits of quantification (LOQs) were always equal or lower than 5 microg kg(-1). Finally the method was applied to egg samples, and erythromycin, enrofloxacin, difloxacin, thiabendazole, emamectin and fenbendazole were detected in four samples.

Abstract
Effect of tetracycline (TC) administration on the proteomic profile of pig muscle was evaluated by 2D electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The TC content at slaughter was determined in L. dorsi samples by HPLC-DAD. Mean residual concentration of TC in the muscle of treated animals, calculated as the sum of TC and epi-TC was 126.3 microg/kg, indicating a rapid elimination of TC in this tissue. Several differential spots (n = 54, p < 0.05) were observed in protein profiles from control and treated animals. MALDI-TOF identification gave a positive match for 5 differential spots, that is, glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 1 (G3PD1), phosphoglycerate kinase 1, novelprotein (0610037L13Rik), leucine aminopeptidase 3 (LAP), and hypothetical protein isoform 2. Results show that proteomics could be a useful tool to reveal pharmacological treatments with TC, even if the possible uses of differential spots as biomarkers to detect illegal administration of TC require further studies. Different spot patterns as a consequence of TC treatments seem to be another interesting issue for the consequences on tissue metabolism and meat quality.

Abstract
This work reports the application of restricted access media (RAM) column, in a multidimensional configuration, for simultaneous analysis of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) in whole eggs with ultraviolet detection. The proteins were partially precipitated by adding 0.5 mL of acetonitrile into 1.0 mL of blended egg followed by centrifugation. The supernatant was injected (250 microL) directly into the multidimensional system. At the first dimension, a restricted access medium (RAM) bovine serum albumin (BSA) octadecyl column (100 mm x 46 mm I.D., Luna silica, 10 microm particle size and 100 A pore size), was used for extraction and concentration of the analytes and at second dimension, an octadecyl column (150 mm x 46 mm I.D., Luna silica, 10 microm particle size and 100 A pore size), for analysis. The developed method showed good selectivity, accuracy and precision for quantification of these different compounds in eggs, and the limits of quantification were 80 ng/mL, for both compounds. The validated method is reliable and sensitive for monitoring residues in whole eggs samples and thus, to determine withdraw period for laying hens using veterinary medicine having SMX-TMP combination.

Abstract
A liquid chromatography with diode array or electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry detection (LC-DAD-ESI-MS) method for the determination of tiamulin residues in honey is presented. The procedure employs a solid-phase extraction (SPE) on polymeric cartridges for the isolation of tiamulin from honey samples diluted in aqueous solution of tartaric acid. Chromatographic separation of the tiamulin is performed, in isocratic mode, on a C18 column using methanol and ammonium carbonate 0.1% in water, in proportion (30:70, v/v). Average analyte recoveries were from 88 to 106% in replica sets of fortified honey samples. The LC-ESI-MS method detection limits differ from 0.5 microg kg(-1) for clear honeys to 1.2 microg kg(-1) for dark honeys. The developed method has been applied to the analysis of tiamulin residues in multifloral honey samples collected from veterinary treated beehives.

Abstract
A new LC-ESI-MS method was developed for the determination of residues of the antibacterial tylosins A, B, C and D in honey. The procedure employed an SPE on polymeric cartridges for the isolation of tylosins from diluted honey. Chromatographic separation of the tylosins was performed on a C18 column (150 x 4.60 mm2 ID, 5 microm) using a ternary gradient made of formic acid 1% in water (solvent A), methanol (solvent B) and ACN (solvent C) as mobile phase, at 30 degrees C and at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min. Average analyte recoveries for the studied compounds ranged from 89 to 106% in replica sets of fortified honey samples. The detection limits for the four drugs studied were between 2 and 3 microg/kg. The developed method has been applied to the analysis of tylosin residues in honey from veterinarian treated beehives fed with the technical product, which contains the four compounds and is a new candidate antibiotic to treat American foulbrood disease of honey bee colonies.

Abstract
An isocratic liquid chromatographic method for the determination of betamethasone (BM) and dexamethasone (DM) using methylprednisolone (MPL) as internal standard and micellar mobile phases consisting of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and organic modifiers such as propanol, butanol and pentanol has been developed. The effect of organic modifiers, surfactant concentration, temperature and flow-rate on the separation has been studied. Method validation for dexametasone or bethametasone in tablets was carried out using a mobile phase 0.24% pentanol and 32.5 mM CTAB, a flow-rate of 0.5 ml min(-1), an Hypersil C18 column (60 degrees C), and UV detection at 243 nm. The recoveries for BM and DM found in the accuracy test were 99 +/- 3 and 101 +/- 2, respectively. Repeatability and intermediate precision expressed as R.S.D. were lower than 5% for both compounds. The proposed method was applied to cocktails containing both compounds.
