Magnetic ordering in cerium and uranium monopnictides

Extremely Weakly Interacting ΔS_{z}=0 and ΔS_{z}=1 Excitations and Evidence for Fractional Quantization in a Magnetization Plateau: CeSb

The plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization M_{s} in the metamagnet CeSb is accompanied by a state of ferromagnetic layers of spins in an up-up-down sequence. We measured M and the specific heat C in the plateau, spin wave analyses of which reveal two distinct branches of excitations. Those with ΔS_{z}=1 as measured by M, coexist with a much larger population of ΔS_{z}=0 excitations measured by C but invisible to M. The large density of ΔS_{z}=0 excitations, their energy gap, and their seeming lack of interaction with ΔS_{z}=1 excitations suggest an analogy with astrophysical dark matter. Additionally, in the middle of the plateau three sharp jumps in M(H) are seen, the size of which, 0.15%M_{s}, is consistent with fractional quantization of magnetization per site in the down-spin layers.

Exploring the exotic f states of prototype compounds CeSb and USb

To unravel the interplay between the strong electronic correlation and itinerant-localized dual nature in typical f electron systems, we employed the density functional theory in combination with the single-site dynamical mean-field theory to systematically investigate the electronic structures of CeSb and USb. We find that the 4f states in CeSb are mostly localized with a weak quasi-particle resonance peak near the Fermi level. Conversely, the 5f electrons in USb display partially itinerant features, accompanied by mixed-valence behavior and prominent valence state fluctuations. Particularly, the 4f electronic correlations in CeSb are orbital-selective with strikingly renormalized 4f_5/2 states, according to the low-energy behaviors of 4f self-energy functions. It is believed that the strong electronic correlation and fantastic bonding of f states contribute to elucidating the magnetism.

Tricritical point from high-field magnetoelastic and metamagnetic effects in UN

Uranium nitride (UN) is one of the most studied actinide materials as it is a promising fuel for the next generation of nuclear reactors. Despite large experimental and theoretical efforts, some of the fundamental questions such as degree of 5 f–electron localization/delocalization and its relationship to magneto-vibrational properties are not resolved yet. Here we show that the magnetostriction of UN measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to 65 T and below the Néel temperature is large and exhibits complex behavior with two transitions. While the high field anomaly is a field-induced metamagnetic-like transition and affects both magnetisation and magnetostriction, the low field anomaly does not contribute to the magnetic susceptibility. Our data suggest a change in the nature of the metamagnetic transition from first to second order-like at a tricritical point at T_tri ∼ 24 K and H_tri ∼ 52 T. The induced magnetic moment at 60 T might suggest that only one subset of magnetic moments has aligned along the field direction. Using the results obtained here we have constructed a magnetic phase diagram of UN. These studies demonstrate that dilatometry in high fields is an effective method to investigate the magneto-structural coupling in actinide materials.
