Rotational tunnelling in organic molecules

Methyl quantum tunneling in ionic liquid [DMIm][TFSI] facilitated by Bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt

We probe, for the first time, quantum tunneling in the methyl groups of the ionic liquid [DMIm][TFSI] facilitated by the presence of Bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt. The observation of tunneling is made possible by crystallization, rather than vitrification, of [DMIm][TFSI] at low temperature. Neutron scattering measurements detect quantum tunneling excitations at ~27 μeV at temperatures below 30 K in the presence of LiTFSI at a concentration of 1 mol/kg, but not in salt-free [DMIm][TFSI]. This indicates that the methyl rotational potential barrier is reduced by the presence of LiTFSI, thus bringing the tunneling excitations into the measurable range. The salt-induced reduction of the rotational barrier is corroborated by quasi-elastic scattering data associated with stochastic re-orientation of methyl groups measured between 40 and 60 K.

Experimental boundaries of the quantum rotor induced polarization (QRIP) in liquid state NMR

The Haupt-effect is a rather seldom used hyperpolarization method. It is based on the interdependence between nuclear spin states and rotational states of nearly free rotating methyl groups having C3 symmetry. A sudden change in temperature from 4.2 K to room temperature by fast dissolution yields considerably enhanced (13)C and (1)H resonance signals. This phenomenon is now termed quantum rotor induced polarization. More than 40 substances have been studied by this approach in order to identify them as polarizable by the 'Haupt-effect in the liquid state'. Influencing factors have been analyzed systematically. It could be concluded that substances having a high tunneling frequency, which is due to a small and narrow potential barrier, are most likely to feature quantum rotor induced polarization-enhanced signals.

Low frequency internal modes of 1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene, tetramethylpyrazine and tetramethyl-1,4-benzoquinone INS, Raman, infrared and theoretical DFT studies

The results of inelastic neutron scattering (INS), Raman and infrared (IR) studies on 1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene (durene), tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) and tetramethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (TMBQ) in the solid state are reported. The observed frequencies are analyzed on the basis of DFT calculations. The low frequency region, below 400 cm(-1), related to the torsional and bending out-of-plane vibrations of the CH(3) groups, is of particular interest. The detailed analysis is possible due to the simulation of the INS spectra by using the auntie-CLIMAX program. It is shown that the observed low frequency INS bands are dramatically shifted, compared to the calculated ones, towards higher frequencies. Although one cannot exclude deficiencies of theoretical methods as applied to low frequency modes, it seems more probable the interpretation based on an existence of non-conventional CH(...)pi, CH(...)N, CH(...)O hydrogen bonds formed by the methyl groups in crystalline phases.

Elastic, quasielastic, and inelastic neutron-scattering studies on the charge-transfer hexamethylbenzene-tetracyanoquinodimethane complex

The 1:1 hexamethylbenzene (HMB)-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) complex shows a first-order phase transition at 230/218 K (heating/cooling) with no change of the space group. The neutron-diffraction studies reveal that this transition is related to a freezing of the rotation of methyl groups. The results for 100 K enabled precise determination of configuration of HMB.TCNQ complexes. The planes of HMB and TCNQ molecules from small angle (6 degrees) so that the dicyanomethylene group approaches the HMB molecule to a distance of 3.34 angstroms. The conformation of methyl groups was exactly determined. The quasielastic neutron-scattering spectra can be interpreted in terms of 120 degrees jumps with different activation barrier in low- and high-temperature phases, equal to 3.7 and 1.8 kJ/mol, respectively. These values are lower than that for neat HMB (6 kJ/mol). The conclusion can be drawn that the methyl groups can reorient more freely in the complex. This conclusion is in agreement with the results of inelastic neutron-scattering studies of low-frequency modes assigned to torsional vibrations of methyl groups. These frequencies are lower than those for neat HMB. The analyzed increase of frequencies of these modes as compared with free molecules can be interpreted as due to formation of unconventional C-H...Y hydrogen bonds which are more pronounced in crystals of neat HMB than in those of HMB.TCNQ. The low-frequency librational modes can be treated as a sensitive measure of unconventional hydrogen bonds formed by the CH3 groups.

Quantitative atom-atom potentials from rotational tunneling: their extraction and their use

Rotational tunneling of small molecular groups has been the subject of considerable theoretical and experimental activity for several decades. Much of this activity has been driven by the promise of exploiting the extreme sensitivity of quantum tunneling to interatomic potentials, but until recently, there was no straightforward means by which quantitative information about these potentials could be extracted. This review explains how a quantitative method, suitable for general application, was developed. It then goes on to show how this has been used to understand tunneling systems for which no previous satisfactory explanation had been found. The application of the methodology, and its results, to other disciplines is discussed.
