Sequential MR signal change of the thrombus in the false lumen of thrombosed aortic dissection

Relationship between magnetic resonance imaging and histopathologic findings in thrombosis in the oral and maxillofacial region: a case report

Histopathologic changes are observed during the clinical course of thrombosis, and the evaluation of such changes by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) might enhance the accuracy of qualitative diagnosis of the disease. The relationship between histopathologic and MRI findings in the chronic phase of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) that developed in the masseter muscle of a 50-year-old Japanese female patient is described. Two regions with different MRI signal intensities were identified, and a 3-layer structure was observed by microscopy. The distinct MRI regions correlated with the microscopic structure, suggesting that MRI can be used for qualitative imaging of a maxillofacial thrombus.

A true aneurysm of the femoral artery in acromegaly

We report on an acromegalic patient who developed a true aneurysm in the right femoral artery. Plain computed tomography (CT) showed a soft tissue mass with low density adjacent to the right femoral artery. T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images exhibited the lesion with moderate hypointensity peripherally, and hypointensity centrally. T2-weighted images showed the lesion to have areas of hypointensity, moderate hyperintensity, and marked hyperintensity. Surgery revealed an ectasia of the common femoral artery and a true aneurysm from the lateral femoral circumflex artery.

Transition from classic aortic dissection to aortic intramural hemorrhage--a case report

A 64-year-old man was hospitalized with chief complaints of chest and back pain. A diagnosis of Stanford type A aortic dissection with a false lumen extending from the ascending to the descending aorta was made based on the results of computed tomography (CT). A CT obtained the following day showed resolution of the false lumen and increased brightness of the aortic wall, typical of aortic dissection with intramural hemorrhage. Although previous studies have described a gradual transition from aortic intramural hemorrhage to aortic dissection with a false lumen, there are no reports of the transition from an aortic dissection with a false lumen to the intramural hemorrhage type of aortic dissection. This patient is of interest when considering the pathogenesis of aortic dissection with intramural hemorrhage and the relationship between the intramural hemorrhage and false-lumen types of aortic dissection.

Prognosis of aortic intramural hemorrhage compared with classic aortic dissection

Aortic intramural hemorrhage occurs fairly frequently among patients with aortic dissection, and may not have a poor prognosis if it is Stanford type B. In patients with type A aortic dissection, cardiac tamponade should be ruled out during observation.
