Abstract
Twenty-four Colombian Creole, Romney Marsh, Hampshire and Corriedale ewes raised under high-altitude conditions in a non-seasonal country were used to determine and to characterize the onset of puberty and of regularity ovarian function since the age of 3months. They underwent blood collection for determination of progesterone and monthly weight assessment. Oestrus was assessed daily by a teaser ram. In all breeds, age at onset of puberty ranged from 5.4 to 6.9 months and age at onset of regular ovarian function ranged from 7.4 to 8.6 months. Colombian Creole showed a higher body development at onset of puberty: 73.5 ± 8.3% versus 56.2 ± 7.4 in Romney Marsh, 58.8 ± 10.4 in Hampshire, and 57.3 ± 8.0 in Corriedale (p < 0.05), as well as a higher relative daily weight gain (+17%, p < 0.05). A negative correlation between daily weight gain and age at onset of puberty was established. Progesterone at onset of puberty and of regularity did not differ between breeds, but characterization of the luteal phase by the progesterone area under the curve (P4-AUC) revealed at both time points significantly lower values for Creole lambs (p < 0.05). Decreased P4-AUC paralleled a higher proportion of short oestral cycles observed prior to onset of regularity in Creoles, whereas an increased proportion of extra-long cycles were recorded in Romney Marsh (p < 0.05). These results establish first reference data for economically important breeds raised under tropical conditions. In comparison with other breeds, Colombian Creole requires a higher body development to achieve puberty and that an important proportion of short characterizes its prepubertal period cycles.

Abstract
Climatic variables can trigger physiological, biochemical, haematological and hormonal alterations that influence the maintenance of homeothermy and can affect production and productivity in sheep. Different mechanisms are responsible for tolerance to heat stress (HS) including coat and skin colour, body size, fat distribution, physiological reactions and not just coat type (hair/wool). This review looks at physical, physiological, molecular and genetic aspects of heat tolerance in sheep and how they affect hair and wool sheep. We propose that it is the adaptation to hot environments and not the type of coat (wool/hair) itself that determines the capacity of the resistance of the animal to HS, due to modifications in essential pathways such as energy metabolism, physiological responses and body size. When studied in similar environments, commercial wool breeds tend to show higher heat stress, but hair breeds tend not to differ from wool breeds that are adapted to hot environments.

Abstract
To evaluate the effects of moderate dietary restriction and lipid supplementation on ovarian follicular development, hormonal and metabolic profile, thirty-five prepuberal ewe lambs were blocked by body weight and randomly assigned to treatments: ALUS (control) - unsupplemented-diet ad libitum (3.5% ether extract, n = 9); R-US - intake restricted to 85% of the ALUS diet (n = 9); AL-LS - lipid-supplemented-diet ad libitum (9.8% ether extract, n = 8); R-LS - intake restricted to 85% of the ALLS diet (n = 9), from 95 ± 8 days of age until estrus or 7 months of age. Lipid supplementation did not reduce dry matter intake. Daily weight gain was greater in lambs fed ad libitum. Plasma glucose was greater in the RLS treatment group, while serum insulin was less with lipid supplementation. There was a treatment by age interaction on total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride serum concentrations. Estrus was detected in 43% of the animals and the overall ovulation rate was 60%. The number of follicles, diameter of the largest follicle, body weight, age and serum progesterone at puberty did not differ among treatment groups. The mean diameter of the largest follicle was greater in lambs having than in those not having ovulations and increased with age in both groups. There was an interaction between the effects of occurrence of ovulation and age on the number of follicles between 3 and 5 mm and > 5 mm. Lipid supplementation and dietary restriction altered the metabolic profile in ewe lambs with no concomitant changes in values for reproductive variables.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop a superovulation protocol for the spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus). The spiny mouse is a desert-adapted rodent species, with a long oestrus cycle (11 days) compared with rat and mouse, and gives birth to few (mean litter size is 3) precocial offspring after a relatively long gestation (39 days). We successfully optimised a superovulation protocol that elicited a 5-fold increase in the normal ovulation rate of this species. To induce superovulation in the spiny mouse 2 injections of equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG, 10 IU each), 9h apart, were required, followed by 20 IU of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). This protocol was successful in 100% of females trialed and at 33 h post-hCG an average of 14.7 ± 1.5, 1-2 cell embryos were recovered. Histological analysis of ovaries following superovulation revealed large corpus lutea and post-ovulatory follicles occupying a large part of the ovary. Ovulation commenced 6-12 h after the hCG injection and continued until 24-33 h post-hCG as indicated by both histological analysis of ovaries and the presence of oocytes/embryos in the oviduct. This superovulation protocol will facilitate the development of an in vitro culture system for spiny mouse embryos.

Abstract
In studies concerning the seasonality in sheep, the effect of the teaser-ram, which can by itself induce oestrus as well as the development of ovary function bodies, has not been considered. In this study, a method is developed to determine ovarian activity during the year while excluding a possible influence of the ram. The study was carried out on 10 German Blackhead Mutton ewes (GBM) and 10 German Mutton Merino ewes (GMM) and lasted for 14 months. The ewes were kept without contact with any ram, and once a week a transrectal ultrasonography was conducted to determine ovary function bodies (corpora lutea, follicles) and a blood sample was taken to analyse progesterone (P4) concentration. In both breeds, the number of ovulating ewes, the ovulation rate (OR), the size of the corpora lutea (CL) and P4-concentrations showed significant seasonal fluctuations. During the main breeding period (September-February), the OR was higher (2.0 +/- 0.4) than during the rest of the year (1.6 +/- 0.5). Outside the main breeding season (March-August), approximately 40% GBM ewes and only approximately 15% GMM ewes produced CL. The cycle and the related seasonal changes in the P4-concentration coincide with different ultrasonically diagnosed CL (developing or regressing, insufficient, no CL). Between the volume of fully developed CL and P4-concentration, correlations of 0.57 (GMM) and 0.45 (GBM), respectively, were found. On average, P4-concentration in September to February was by approximately 1.60-1.66 nmol/l in the GMM and by approximately 1.80-1.86 nmol/l in the GBM higher than in spring and summer. Considering the OR, the P4-values corresponded with the CL volumes, i.e. in the months from August to February the CL values were significantly larger than in the months March to August. The ultrasonic ovarian diagnosis is a useful method to determine the ram-uninfluenced seasonality of reproduction in sheep.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to study seasonal variations of thyroidal activity, serum testosterone concentration and seminal characteristics of two breeds of Iranian fat-tailed sheep. Eight 3 to 4-year-old rams of Ghezel and Mehraban breeds (4 rams/breed) were randomly selected from a flock of fertile rams. Semen was collected by using an artificial vagina, and blood samples were obtained via jugular vein. Seminal characteristics, scrotal length, width, and circumference, and blood parameters were measured at 3-week intervals. Time of the year significantly (P < 0.05) affected the volume of semen, sperm concentration, percent live sperm, percent normal sperm, total sperm number, seminal pH, seminal lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration, scrotal circumference, scrotal width, and serum levels of testosterone, cholesterol, triiodothyronine (T(3)), tetraiodothyronine (T(4)), free T(4) index (FT(4)I), and TSH. Scrotal length was not affected by the time of sampling (P > 0.05). The effect of breed on the serum concentrations of hormones and cholesterol was not significant. Volume of semen, percent normal sperm, and total number of normal sperm were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in Mehraban but scrotal circumference, scrotal width and scrotal length were greater in Ghezel rams. Breedxtime interaction effect was significant for T(4), FT(4)I, sperm concentration, and total sperm number. The largest values for TSH, T(4), FT(4)I, testosterone, total sperm number, percent normal sperm, percent live sperm, sperm concentration, volume of semen and scrotal circumference were found from early summer to winter and the lowest values were recorded at the end of spring and in early summer. In both breeds, high and negative correlations (r = -0.7 to -0.8) were found between LDH levels in semen and percent live sperm, percent normal sperm and total sperm number (P < 0.01). It is unlikely that such variations in seminal quality would affect the fertility under natural mating.

Abstract
For 6 years adult, non-synchronized Hampshire ewes (n=2,5,8,8,9 and 12) and rams (n=6,10,12,11,11 and 9) were maintained separately and released to contiguous pastures having in common a woven-wire fence about 80m long and 1.1m high. Natural estrous cycles were monitored daily by observations of ram-seeking behavior as defined as a ewe being persistent in staying at the common fence with attention focused on the ram to the virtual exclusion of grazing. Day 0 of the estrous cycle is the first day that ram-seeking is observed. One hundred and thirty four fence stays and 115 estrous cycles have been observed. For cycles falling within the normal range, the mean cycle duration (+/-SE) was 16.53+/-0.03 days. During the first four study years, a copulation test with an intact ram, carried out on a spot-check basis, indicated that all tested ewes showing ram-seeking, except one, were in estrus. Ram-seeking never occurred outside of the estrous period of the cycle. During the fifth year, daily copulation tests with an intact ram and daily observations for ram-seeking has indicated that estrus generally lasts about two days while ram-seeking lasts for one of these days, so that the two behaviors while overlapping are not coextensive. During the sixth year, daily copulation tests with a vasectomized ram showed again a partial coincidence of the two behaviors, but also that occasionally they appeared to have the same duration. It is concluded that the utilization of ram-seeking provides an alternative, practical means to monitor the estrous cycle.
