A Review on Capturing Twin Nucleation in Crystal Plasticity for Hexagonal Metals

Owing to its ability to incorporate Schmid’s law at each integration point, crystal plasticity has proven a powerful tool to simulate and predict the slip behavior at the grain level and the ensuing heterogeneous stress/strain localization and texture evolution at the macroscopic level. Unfortunately, notwithstanding substantial efforts during the last three decades, this remarkable capability has not been replicated for materials where twinning becomes a noticeable deformation mechanism, namely in the case of low-stacking fault energy cubic, orthorhombic, and hexagonal close-packed structures. The culprit lies in the widely adopted unphysical pseudo-slip approach for capturing twin formation. While the slip is diffuse, twinning is a localized event that occurs as a drastic burst of a confined number of partial twinning dislocations establishing an interface that pursues growth through a thread of perfect twinning dislocations in the sense of bicrystallography. Moreover, at earlier stages, twin nucleation may require atomic diffusion (Shuffling) and faceting, generally demanding higher stress levels not necessarily on the twin shear plane, while triaxiality at adequate sites might be needed or preferred such as lower grain boundary misorientations or other twin boundaries. Identifying a mathematical framework in the constitutive equations for capturing these twin formation sensitivities has been a daunting challenge for crystal plasticity modelers, which has stalled ameliorating the design of key hexagonal materials for futuristic climate change-related industries. This paper reviews existing approaches to incorporating twinning in crystal plasticity models, discusses their capabilities, addresses their limitations, and suggests prospective views to fill gaps. The incorporation of a new physics-based twin nucleation criterion in crystal plasticity models holds groundbreaking potential for substantial progress in the field of computational material science.

Preferred Orientation of Quartz in Metamorphic Rocks from the Bergell Alps

Crystal preferred orientation of 47 samples of quartzite and eight samples of associated marbles from the Bergell Alps have been analyzed with time-of-flight neutron diffraction and EBSD. The results show a clear distinction of texture types for quartzites transformed from Triassic sandstones and quartz layers in gneiss. Textures of Triassic quartzites are overall weak and display a maximum of c-axes perpendicular to the foliation or a crossed girdle perpendicular to the lineation. Pole figures for positive rhombs {10 1 ¯ 1} show a maximum perpendicular to the foliation and negative rhombs {01 1 ¯ 1} generally display a minimum. Based on polycrystal plasticity models this texture type can be attributed to a combination of basal and rhombohedral slip. Asymmetry of the distributions is attributed to simple shear and local strain heterogeneities. The relatively weak texture is partially caused by muscovite limiting dislocation motion and grain growth, as well as adjacent layers of marble that accommodate significant strain. Most quartz layers in gneiss, including mylonites, display a texture with a-axes parallel to the lineation and a c-axis maximum in the intermediate fabric direction. This texture type can be attributed to dominant prismatic slip. Many samples are recrystallized and recrystallization appears to strengthen the deformation texture. The study shows good agreement of neutron diffraction and EBSD. Neutron diffraction data average over larger volumes and maximum pole densities are generally lower and more representative for the bulk material. With EBSD the microstructure and mechanical twinning can be quantified.

Direct estimation of austenitic grain dimensions in heat affected zones of a martensitic steel from EBSD images

In the context of automated analyses of electron-backscattered-diffraction images, we present in this paper a novel method to automatically extract morphological properties of prior austenitic grains in martensitic steels based on raw crystallographic orientation maps. This quantification includes the estimation of the mean chord length in specific directions, with in addition the reconstruction of the mean shape of austenitic grains inducing anisotropic shape properties. The approach is based on the morphological measure of covariance on a decision curve of grain fidelity per disorientation angle. These efforts have been motivated by the need of realistic microstructures to perform micromechanical studies of grain boundary localized damage phenomenons in steels, one example being the type IV fracture phenomenon occurring in welded joints of grade P91/P92 steel. This failure is attributed to a change of the microstructure due to thermal gradients arising during the welding process. To precisely capture the relationships between microstructural changes and mechanical fields localization in a polycrystalline aggregate, we first need to achieve a reasonable stochastic model of its microstructure, which relies on a detailed knowledge of the microstructural morphology. As martensitic steels possess multiscale microstructures composed of prior austenitic grains, packets and laths, a relevant modelling strategy has to be proposed to account for the observed hierarchies. With this objective, this paper focuses on the larger scale entities present in the microstructure, namely, the austenitic grains.
