Improvement of sensitivity in the alanine/ESR dosimetry

Investigation of the nitrogen hyperfine coupling of the second stable radical in γ-irradiated l-alanine crystals by 2D-HYSCORE spectroscopy

The second stable radical, NH(3)(+)C()(CH(3))COO(-), R2, in the γ-irradiated single crystal of l-alanine and its fully (15)N-enriched analogue were studied by an advanced pulsed EPR technique, 2D-HYSCORE (two-dimensional hyperfine sublevel correlation) spectroscopy at 200K. The nitrogen hyperfine coupling tensor of the R2 radical was determined from the HYSCORE data and provides new experimental data for improved characterization of the R2 radical in the crystal lattice. The results obtained complement the experimental proton data available for the R2 radical and could lead to increased accuracy and reliability of EPR spectrum simulations.

Electron spin relaxation times for the alanine radical in two dosimeters

The spin-lattice relaxation times for the alanine radical in dosimeters were measured by long-pulse saturation recovery and by inversion recovery. The strong dependence of the recovery time constants on experimental conditions show that spectral diffusion processes contribute to enhanced relaxation rates, analogous to what was observed previously for 60Co gamma-irradiated polycrystalline l-alanine. The spectral diffusion processes make it possible to run quantitative CW spectra of the alanine radical at substantially higher microwave powers than could be used in the absence of spectral diffusion processes.

Uncertainties in alanine dosimetry in the therapeutic dose range

A method for evaluating the overall uncertainty of alanine EPR transfer dosimetry in the therapeutic dose range is described. The method uses experimental data on EPR signal reproducibility from replicate dosimeters irradiated to low doses (1-5 Gy), estimates of Type B uncertainties, and Monte Carlo simulations of heteroscedastic orthogonal linear regression. A Bruker ECS106 spectrometer and Bruker alanine dosimeters have been used for this evaluation. The results demonstrate that alanine dosimetry can be used for transfer dosimetry in that range with the overall uncertainty 1.5-4% (1sigma) depending on the dose, the number of replicate dosimeters. and the duration of the calibration session (the session should not exceed one working day).

Response charactterization of ammonium tartrate solid state pellets for ESR dosimetry with radiotherapeutic photon and electron beams

Solid state pellets (1 mm thick) for electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry were made using ammonium tartrate as the radiation-sensitive substance. Their behaviour was experimentally investigated as a function of dose with 60Co gamma rays. The calibration function obtained permits measurements of absorbed dose in the 2-50 Gy range, with a combined uncertainty of +/-4%. The lowest detectable dose was about 0.5 Gy. These properties are comparable with or even better than those of ESR dosimeters made from other materials. The time stability of the ESR signal of ammonium tartrate dosimeters at different storage conditions after irradiation was studied. A rather complex behaviour was observed, which suggests that more species of free radicals are produced by radiation and that migration processes may be effective. No dependence of the response on beam quality was found for high-energy photon and electron beams produced by a linear accelerator used in radiotherapy, whereas dose was underestimated with low-energy x-rays.

Study of relaxation rates of stable paramagnetic centers in gamma-irradiated alanine

The stable L-alanine radical induced by gamma-irradiation was examined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), transfer saturation EPR and electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) in the temperature region of fast motion of the methyl group (180-320 K). From the obtained spectral line broadening and spectral intensity the correlation time for the methyl rotation was estimated. The complex processes determining the relaxation rate were examined in the same temperature interval. It was shown that important contributions to the relaxation rate arise from non-secular and pseudo-secular types of contributions. The non-secular contribution involves intramolecular dynamics while the pseudo-secular contribution originates from intermolecular motions. The obtained values for the dynamical parameters have been compared with those obtained by pulse EPR methods and by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on undamaged crystals.
