Photochemical properties of 1,3-diketonate transition metal chelates

Synthesis, Characterization, DFT, and In Silico Investigation of Two Newly Synthesized β-Diketone Derivatives as Potent COX-2 Inhibitors

Despite extensive genetic and biochemical characterization, the molecular genetic basis underlying the biosynthesis of β-diketones remains largely unexplored. β-Diketones and their complexes find broad applications as biologically active compounds. In this study, in silico molecular docking results revealed that two β-diketone derivatives, namely 2-(2-(4-fluorophenyl)hydrazono)-5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione and 5,5-dimethyl-2-(2-(2-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)hydrazono)cyclohexane-1,3-dione, exhibit anti-COX-2 activities. However, recent docking results indicated that the relative anti-COX-2 activity of these two studied β-diketones was influenced by the employed docking programs. For improved design of COX-2 inhibitors from β-diketones, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, Hirshfeld surface analysis, energy framework, and ADMET studies. The goal was to understand the interaction mechanisms and evaluate the inhibitory characteristics. The results indicate that 5,5-dimethyl-2-(2-(2-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)hydrazono)cyclohexane-1,3-dione shows greater anti-COX-2 activity compared to 2-(2-(4-fluorophenyl)hydrazono)-5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione.

Discovering of the L ligand impact on luminescence enhancement of Eu(Dibenzoylmethane)3.Lx complexes employing transient absorption spectroscopy

The effect of luminescent enhancement under exchange of the auxiliary ligand in Europium(III) tris(1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedionato) monohydrate was investigated by steady-state and time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. The excited state relaxation dynamics of this complex was analysed through a comparison of the experimental data obtained for several model compounds, namely Eu(DBM)₃·NH₃, Eu(DBM)₃.EDA, Eu(DBM)₃.Phen, Al(DBM)₃ and dibenzoylmethane (DBM) in various solutions and polymer matrices. The results show there is no linear relationship between enhancement of the emission quantum yield and the luminescent lifetime, which suggests that the auxiliary ligand reduces the rate of nonradiative relaxation of the lanthanide ion, but also affects the excited state energy transfer from ligand to metal ion. Transient absorption data shows a clear correlation between the efficiency of the energy transfer and the degree of triplet state population expressed by an amplification of the signal for its excited state absorption band on going from Eu(DBM)₃·H₂O to the Eu(DBM) = .L complex. The results show that this auxiliary ligand exchange acts as a "switch" turning the intersystem crossing on or off as a competitive pathway for excited state relaxation of the europium(III) complexes.

General design strategy for aromatic ketone-based single-component dual-emissive materials

Materials with both fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) can be useful in the field of optoelectronics. Here we present a general strategy, taking advantage of carbonyl compounds, which have been known to possess efficient intersystem crossing with high triplet state yield, as well as a strongly fluorescent intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) state, to produce materials with both fluorescence and RTP at the same time, or dual-emission. In the presented model systems, in order to generate a suitable ICT state, Lewis acid binding to aromatic ketone derivatives has been proved to be a viable method. We have selected AlCl3, BCl3, BF3, and GdCl3 as binding Lewis acids, in that they exhibit sufficiently strong binding affinity toward the aromatic ketone derivatives to afford stable complexes and yet do not possess low-lying electronic transitions vs the ligands. We have successfully observed dual-emission from these designed complexes in polymers, which act to suppress competitive thermal decay at room temperature. One of the complexes is particularly interesting as it is dual-emissive in the crystalline state. Single-crystal XRD reveals that the molecule forms multiple hydrogen bonds with its neighbors in crystals, which may significantly enhance the rigidity of the environment.

Sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone)/Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Sensitizing System for Solution Photogeneration of Small Ag, Au, and Cu Crystallites

Illumination of air-free aqueous solutions containing sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and poly(vinyl alcohol) with 350 nm light results in benzophenone ketyl radicals of the polyketone. The polymer radicals form with a quantum yield 0.02 and decay with a second-order rate constant 6 orders of magnitude lower than that of typical alpha-hydroxy radicals. Evidence is presented that the polymeric benzophenone ketyl radicals reduce Ag+, Cu2+, and AuCl4- to metal particles of nanometer dimensions. Decreases in the reduction rates with increasing Ag(I), Cu(II), and Au(III) concentrations are explained using a kinetic model in which the metal ions quench the excited state of the polymeric benzophenone groups, which forms the macromolecular radicals. Quenching is fastest for Ag+, whereas Cu2+ and AuCl4- exhibit similar rate constants. Particle formation becomes more complex as the number of equivalents needed to reduce the metal ions increases; the Au(III) system is an extreme case where the radical reactions operate in parallel with secondary light-initiated and thermal reduction channels. For each metal ion, the polymer-initiated photoreactions produce crystallites possessing distinct properties, such as a very strong plasmon in the Ag case or the narrow size distribution exhibited by Au particles.
