Photocatalytic reduction of N2 to NH 3 sensitized by the [RuIII-ethylenediaminetetraacetate-2,2′-bipyridyl]− complex in a Pt-TiO2 semiconductor particulate system

Towards H2O catalyzed N2-fixation over TiO2 doped Run clusters (n = 5, 6): a mechanistic and kinetic approach

H2O driven N2 fixation is known as the best alternative pathway to synthesise NH3 under ambient conditions. The thermodynamic non-spontaneous reaction can be accomplished by a photocatalytic water splitting reaction over a TiO2 supported surface with oxygen vacancies. Previous experiments have also shown N2 activation over a neutral Ru cluster whose catalytic activity was remarkably enhanced by TiO2 doping. In this article, we have investigated the detailed mechanism and kinetics of the H2O catalyzed nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) over bare and TiO2 doped Ru5 clusters in conjunction with DFT and TST calculations. The lack of photochemical activity of the small model cluster provoked us to explore an alternative route of NH3 formation via H2O catalysis. For this, we have considered H2 as co-reactant. The partial reduction of N2 into NH3 or N2H4 could be achieved by a H2O oxidation reaction, however, catalytic regeneration requires additional H2 which effectively makes the overall reaction catalyzed by H2O. Above all, the present investigation suggests that NH3 is most favorably produced through the distal mechanism. Analysis of the rate constants demonstrates that the doping with TiO2 accelerates the kinetics of NRR by a few orders of magnitude. Furthermore, an increase of the size of the metal cluster would not significantly enhance the overall performance of NRR.

Using dyes for evaluating photocatalytic properties: a critical review

This brief review aims at analyzing the use of dyestuffs for evaluating the photocatalytic properties of novel photocatalysts. It is shown that the use of dyes as predictors for photocatalytic activity has its roots in the pre visible-light activity era, when the aim was to treat effluents streams containing hazardous dyes. The main conclusion of this review is that, in general, dyes are inappropriate as model compounds for the evaluation of photocatalytic activity of novel photocatalysts claimed to operate under visible light. Their main advantage, the ability to use UV-Vis spectroscopy, is severely limited by a variety of factors, most of which are related to the presence of other species. The presence of a second mechanism, sensitization, diminishes the generality required from a model contaminant used for testing a novel photocatalyst. While it is recommended not to use dyes for general testing of novel photocatalysts, it is still understandable that a model system consisting of a dye and a semiconductor can be of large importance if the degradation of a specific dye is the main aim of the research, or, alternatively, if the abilities of a specific dye to induce the degradation of a different type of contaminant are under study.

Microfluidic reactors for photocatalytic water purification

Photocatalytic water purification utilizes light to degrade the contaminants in water and may enjoy many merits of microfluidics technology such as fine flow control, large surface-area-to-volume ratio and self-refreshing of reaction surface. Although a number of microfluidic reactors have been reported for photocatalysis, there is still a lack of a comprehensive review. This article aims to identify the physical mechanisms that underpin the synergy of microfluidics and photocatalysis, and, based on which, to review the reported microfluidic photocatalytic reactors. These microreactors help overcome different problems in bulk reactors such as photon transfer limitation, mass transfer limitation, oxygen deficiency, and lack of reaction pathway control. They may be scaled up for large-throughput industrial applications of water processing and may also find niche applications in rapid screening and standardized tests of photocatalysts.

Semiconductor photocatalysis--mechanistic and synthetic aspects

Preceding work on photoelectrochemistry at semiconductor single-crystal electrodes has formed the basis for the tremendous growth in the three last decades in the field of photocatalysis at semiconductor powders. The reason for this is the unique ability of inorganic semiconductor surfaces to photocatalyze concerted reduction and oxidation reactions of a large variety of electron-donor and -acceptor substrates. Whereas great attention was paid to water splitting and the exhaustive aerobic degradation of pollutants, only a small amount of research also explored synthetic aspects. After introducing the basic mechanistic principles, standard experiments for the preparation and characterization of visible light active photocatalysts as well as the investigation of reaction mechanisms are discussed. Novel atom-economic C-C and C-N coupling reactions illustrate the relevance of semiconductor photocatalysis for organic synthesis, and demonstrate that the multidisciplinary field combines classical photochemistry with electrochemistry, solid-state chemistry, and heterogeneous catalysis.

On the mechanism of nitrogen photofixation at nanostructured iron titanate films

The photofixation of dinitrogen to ammonia at a nanostructured iron titanate thin film, prepared from iron(III) chloride and titanium tetraisopropylate, was established by isotopic labeling employing (15,15)N(2). It is found that traces of iron chloride in the film are required to observe significant amounts of ammonia. It is therefore proposed that the photogenerated hole oxidizes chloride to an adsorbed chlorine atom and the latter subsequently oxidizes ethanol, the reducing agent necessary for ammonia formation. However, thin films obtained from a chloride-free precursor like iron tris-acetylacetonate are also active. Upon prolonged irradiation ammonia is oxidized to nitrate by traces of oxygen. It is found that this final reaction step does not require photoexcitation of the iron titanate thin film but occurs thermally. Titania films exhibit about the same catalytic activity in ammonia oxidation whereas iron oxide films are much less active. Contrary to this thermal reaction step, the reduction of intermediate hydrazine by ethanol occurs only photochemically.
