Abstract
The hydrogen atom transfer reaction (HAT) between selected benzophenones (benzophenone BP, 3-carboxybenzophenone 3CB, and 4-carboxybenzophenone 4CB) and 2-propanol was reinvestigated focusing on stable product analysis. As expected, the primary species of these HAT's are the respective diphenyl and dimethyl ketyl radicals that eventually undergo several radical coupling reactions leading to stable photoproducts. However, the mechanisms of these free radical reactions remain unclear and open to question. In this report, we focus on the detailed analysis of the stable photoproducts of these reactions using liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS). Products of photopinacolization (benzpinacol and two diastereoisomers of 4CB and 3CB dimers) and isomeric radical cross-coupling adducts of respective diphenyl and dimethyl ketyl radicals were separated chromatographically, and their structures were determined by high-resolution MS/MS, and the mechanisms of the reactions are discussed.

Benzophenone Suppression of Quercetin Antioxidant Activity towards Lipids under UV-B Irradiation Regime: Detection by HPLC Chromatography. J CHEM-NY 2013. Abstract
Quercetin, a well-known flavonoid antioxidant, has been employed to control benzophenone-sensitized peroxidation of the lipid mixture in methanol solution, induced by continuous UV-B irradiation. Surprisingly, the detected quercetin antioxidant activity was almost negligible. The presented data suggests that the reason is not in its own UV-B-induced degradation but rather in its interrelationship with benzophenone during UV-B stress. On the other side of this relationship, benzophenone anticipated sensitizing role towards lipids; that is, the initiation of lipid peroxidation has been affected as well. These results, obtained by HPLC chromatography, partly confirm but partly relativize to some extent recent results obtained with the same system by spectrophotometric method.

Abstract
In many physical processes involving colloidal particles, transient structures (e.g., in transient particle gels, phase-separating suspensions) are created. Freezing these structures by chemically inter-cross-linking the particles could be an intriguing route to create network structures with special (e.g., mechanical) properties. Alternatively, photochemically fixing transient structures, thereby making them accessible to detailed analysis, could provide new insight in processes such as colloidal aggregation or crystal nucleation, which are of fundamental importance for soft matter physics as well as for applications. For this purpose we synthesized microgel particles, which carry photoreactive groups on the surface, and explored the possibility of creating chemical interparticle cross-links by UV illumination. Via seeded growth emulsion polymerization, we synthesized monodisperse polystyrene microgels with a radius of about 210 nm. In organic solvents, the particles swell to a hydrodynamic radius of 350 nm. These polystyrene microgels were functionalized by using a polymer analogous Friedel-Crafts benzoylation to introduce benzophenone groups onto the surface. The colloidal particles were characterized by static and dynamic light scattering, optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The interparticle cross-linking behavior of the modified microgels in concentrated dispersions was examined by dynamic light scattering and optical and scanning electron microscopy. To study the effect of short-range attractive forces between the particles, linear polystyrene chains acting as depletion agents were added. In time-dependent irradiation studies, we observe a coexistence of individual particles and clusters with a size range around 2 mum in radius already at shortest irradiation times upon addition of linear polymer. These (transient) clusters-introduced by depletion attraction-are permanently fixed by photo-cross-linking and, thus, on dilution of the system made amenable to analysis by light scattering.

Abstract
A nanosecond time-resolved resonance Raman (ns-TR3) spectroscopic study of the triplet state benzophenone reaction with the 2-propanol hydrogen-donor solvent and subsequent reactions is presented. The TR3 spectra show that the benzophenone triplet state (npi*) hydrogen-abstraction reaction with 2-propanol is very fast (about 10 to 20 ns) and forms a diphenylketyl radical and an associated 2-propanol radical partner. The temporal evolution of the TR3 spectra also indicates that recombination of these two radical species occurs with a time constant of about 1170 ns to produce a LAT (light absorbing transient) intermediate that is identified as the 2-[4-(hydroxylphenylmethylene)cyclohexa-2,5-dienyl]propan-2-ol (p-LAT) species. Comparison of the TR3 spectra with results obtained from density functional theory calculations for the species of interest was used to elucidate the identity, structure, properties, and major spectral features of the intermediates observed in the TR3 spectra. The structures and properties of the reaction intermediates observed (triplet benzophenone, diphenyl ketyl radical, and p-LAT) are briefly discussed.
