Mechanistic considerations of the protonation and fragmentation of highly functionalized molecules in fast atom bombardment: High resolution mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry analysis of the ions formed by fast atom bombardment of digoxin and related cardiac glycosides

Chemical Bonding by the Chemical Orthogonal Space of Reactivity

The fashionable Parr-Pearson (PP) atoms-in-molecule/bonding (AIM/AIB) approach for determining the exchanged charge necessary for acquiring an equalized electronegativity within a chemical bond is refined and generalized here by introducing the concepts of chemical power within the chemical orthogonal space (COS) in terms of electronegativity and chemical hardness. Electronegativity and chemical hardness are conceptually orthogonal, since there are opposite tendencies in bonding, i.e., reactivity vs. stability or the HOMO-LUMO middy level vs. the HOMO-LUMO interval (gap). Thus, atoms-in-molecule/bond electronegativity and chemical hardness are provided for in orthogonal space (COS), along with a generalized analytical expression of the exchanged electrons in bonding. Moreover, the present formalism surpasses the earlier Parr-Pearson limitation to the context of hetero-bonding molecules so as to also include the important case of covalent homo-bonding. The connections of the present COS analysis with PP formalism is analytically revealed, while a numerical illustration regarding the patterning and fragmentation of chemical benchmarking bondings is also presented and fundamental open questions are critically discussed.

Gas-phase fragmentation of protonated C60-pyrimidine derivatives

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (ESI/MS/MS) and multiple stage mass spectrometry (MSn, n > 2) were used in the positive ion mode, with two different types of mass spectrometers, a quadrupole time-of-flight and an ion trap, to characterize two sets of different types of C60-aminopyrimidine exohedral derivatives. In one set, the pyrimidine moiety bears an amino acid methyl ester residue, and in the other the pyrimidine ring is part of a nucleoside-type moiety, the latter existing as two separated diastereoisomers.We have found that retro-cycloaddition processes occur for the closed shell protonated species formed by electrospraying C60 derivatives synthesized by Diels-Alder reactions, whereas for the C60 derivatives synthesized via 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions, these processes did not occur. Formation of diagnostic ions allowed the differentiation between the two groups of fullerene derivatives, and between the diastereoisomers of C60 derivatives with a nucleoside-type moiety. In general, the fragmentation processes are strongly dependent on the protonation sites and on the structure of the exohedral moieties.

Liquid chromatography with electrospray ionisation mass spectrometric detection of phenolic compounds from Olea europaea

The results demonstrate the potential of electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry for the specific detection of phenolic species in olives. Phenolic compounds were detected with greater sensitivity in the negative ion mode, but results from positive and negative ion modes were complementary with the positive ion mode showing structurally significant fragments. This is demonstrated by the identification of oleuropein and isomers of verbascoside. The structure of the latter were confirmed by retention, mass spectral and nuclear magnetic resonance data. These isomers have not previously been reported in olive.

Origins and structures of background ions produced by fast-atom bombardment of glycerol

Accurate mass measurements were used to assign elemental compositions and tandem mass spectrometry was used to characterize the peak-at-every-mass background ions produced by kiloelectron-volt-particle bombardment of neat fast-atom bombardment matrices. The majority of the background ions observed in the mass spectrum of neat glycerol was identified. On the basis of the experiments with glycerol, a theory for the formation of background ions is presented. Results are discussed according to the chemical and physical changes that ygoe;on-volt-particle bombardment produces in the matrix.

Injection of reagent ions into the selvedge region in fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry

A divided probe that incorporates a potassium aluminosilicate glass target and an analyte/glycerol matrix target, spatially separated, was used to inject potassium ions (K(+)) into the high-pressure "selvedge" region formed above the analyte/glycerol matrix target during fast-atom bombardment (FAB); [M+K](+) adduct ions that represent the types of gas-phase neutral molecules present in the selvedge region are observed. Computer modeling assisted in designing the divided target and an additional ion optical element for the FAB ion source to optimize interactions between K(+) ions and the desorbed neutral molecules. The capability of injecting K(+) ions into the FAB experiment has utility in both mechanistic studies and analyses. Experimental results here are consistent with a model for the desorption/ionization processes in FAB in which some types of neutral analyte molecules are desorbed intact and are subsequently protonated by glycerol chemical ionization. Unstable protonated molecules undergo unimolecular decomposition to yield observed fragment ions. The use of K(+) cationization of analytes for molecular weight confirmation is demonstrated, as well as its utility in FAB experiments in which mixtures are encountered.
