Hotspot analysis for organic laying hen husbandry—identification of sustainability problems as potential risk points to lose consumers’ trust

Over the last decade, there has been growing societal concern about the welfare of farmed animals. Although organic agriculture provides higher living standards, there are still critical points which can damage consumers’ trust in organic livestock farming. That is a risk, as especially organic farming relies on consumer trust. A hotspot analysis was conducted to identify critical points within the organic laying hen husbandry in Germany. This methodology aims to examine the sustainability of a product along its whole life cycle. Based on literature reviews, the life phases breeding, keeping, feeding, animal health, transport, and slaughter were assessed with ecological, social, and animal welfare criteria. Finally, the results were triangulated with various experts, and the critical points were classified in terms of their potential to diverge from consumers’ expectations. Our results show a high dependency of the organic sector on the conventional breeding process and its specialized breeds. This fact involves critical points which contradict the ideology of organic farming. The loopholes in the organic EU regulations in transport and slaughter were identified as additional threats to consumer trust in the organic system. The overall not better animal health compared to the conventional poultry system and the high numbers of poultry kept on some organic farms are also possible causes of disappointment in consumers’ vision of organic livestock farming. Therefore, we recommend an adjustment of some organic EU regulations regarding these points. Further, a linkage of the organic certification of a slaughterhouse to higher animal welfare standards during slaughter should be considered.

Methylene blue-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy on chicken semen

BACKGROUND

Artificial insemination is widely employed in poultry, but high degrees of bacterial contamination are often observed in semen because of its passage through the cloaca. Consequently, most semen extenders for birds have antibiotics that could aggravate bacterial resistance.

METHODS

We evaluated the potential of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an alternative to the use of antibiotics, and assessed whether changes in concentration and incubation time with methylene blue (MB), radiant exposure, and irradiance of light affect spermatozoa activity and bacteria in chicken semen.

RESULTS

Incubation with MB (< 25 µM) did not alter sperm motility, regardless of the pre-irradiation time (PIT, 1 or 5 min). Following 1 min of PIT with MB at 10 µM, samples were irradiated for 30, 60, 120, and 180 s at irradiances of 44, 29, and 17 mW/ cm² (660 nm LedBox). MB and light alone did not interfere with the analyzed parameters. However, when both factors were associated, increases in light dose led to greater reductions in sperm parameters, regardless of the irradiance used. Besides, PDT conditions that were less harmful to spermatozoa were not able to significantly reduce bacterial colonies in chicken semen.

CONCLUSIONS

A failure in MB selectivity could explain unsuccessful bacterial reduction following PDT. Further research involving other photosensitizers or conjugating molecules to MB to target microbial cells is needed for PDT application in poultry breeders.

Growth performance, morphometric of the small intestine, lymphoid organ, and ovary of laying hens supplemented with Dates (Phoenix dactylifera L.) extract in drinking water

Background and Aim:

Antibiotic, improves the growth performance of laying hens when used as a feed additive; however, it has been banned in Europe. Furthermore, secondary metabolites used as a substitute for antibiotics are compounds produced by plants. Therefore, this aims to determine the effect of dates water extract (DWE) on the performance of laying hens. This study used dates containing secondary metabolites as a feed additive and substitute for antibiotics.

Materials and Methods:

A completely randomized design was used, dividing 400 Lohmann brown day old chick into five groups (each group has five replications and each replication consisted of 16 laying hens). Furthermore, there were two control groups such as mineral water control group and antibiotic growth promoters (basal feed+50 mg/kg of bacitracin), and three DWE groups such as 5% DWE (50 mg/mL), 10% DWE (100 mg/mL), and 20% DWE (200 mg/mL). Dates extract treatment was administered through drinking water for 54 days, whereby three laying hens from each replication were taken randomly and decapitated on the neck. Afterwards, a necropsy was performed for histological preparations of the small intestine, ovary, and lymphoid organs. The structure and morphology of the small intestine, and ovaries were observed through histological preparations, while lymphoid organs were observed through histological preparation and morphometry, and body morphometry, body weight, feed intake and weight gain were observed by measurements and weighing.

Results:

Small intestine morphology, ovarian follicle, and growth performance of the DWE2 group increased significantly compared to the control group, but the lymphoid organs index was influenced by DWE1.

Conclusion:

The administration of 10% dates extract (100 mg/mL) in drinking water improves the morphology of the small intestine, ovarian follicles, lymphoid organs, and growth performance.
