Exploring Sustainable Agriculture with Nitrogen-Fixing Cyanobacteria and Nanotechnology

The symbiotic relationship between nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and plants offers a promising avenue for sustainable agricultural practices and environmental remediation. This review paper explores the molecular interactions between nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and nanoparticles, shedding light on their potential synergies in agricultural nanotechnology. Delving into the evolutionary history and specialized adaptations of cyanobacteria, this paper highlights their pivotal role in fixing atmospheric nitrogen, which is crucial for ecosystem productivity. The review discusses the unique characteristics of metal nanoparticles and their emerging applications in agriculture, including improved nutrient delivery, stress tolerance, and disease resistance. It delves into the complex mechanisms of nanoparticle entry into plant cells, intracellular transport, and localization, uncovering the impact on root-shoot translocation and systemic distribution. Furthermore, the paper elucidates cellular responses to nanoparticle exposure, emphasizing oxidative stress, signaling pathways, and enhanced nutrient uptake. The potential of metal nanoparticles as carriers of essential nutrients and their implications for nutrient-use efficiency and crop yield are also explored. Insights into the modulation of plant stress responses, disease resistance, and phytoremediation strategies demonstrate the multifaceted benefits of nanoparticles in agriculture. Current trends, prospects, and challenges in agricultural nanotechnology are discussed, underscoring the need for responsible and safe nanoparticle utilization. pH-Sensitive Gold Nanorods for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) Delivery and DNA-Binding Studies

A facile experimental protocol for the synthesis of poly(ethylene glycol)-modified (PEGylated) gold nanorods (AuNRs@PEG) is presented as well as an effective drug loading procedure using the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) naproxen (NAP). The interaction of AuNRs@PEG and drug-loaded AuNRs (AuNRs@PEG@NAP) with calf-thymus DNA was studied at a diverse temperature revealing different interaction modes; AuNRs@PEG may interact via groove-binding and AuNRs@PEG@NAP may intercalate to DNA-bases. The cleavage activity of the gold nanoparticles for supercoiled circular pBR322 plasmid DNA was studied by gel electrophoresis while their affinity for human and bovine serum albumins was also evaluated. Drug-release studies revealed a pH-sensitive behavior with a release up to a maximum of 24% and 33% NAP within the first 180 min at pH = 4.2 and 6.8, respectively. The cytotoxicity of AuNRs@PEG and AuNRs@PEG@NAP was evaluated against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines. The development of AuNRs as an efficient non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) delivery system for chemotherapy is still in its infancy. The present work can shed light and inspire other research groups to work in this direction.

Nanohybrids of oxides nanoparticles-chitosan and their antimicrobial properties

Growing international problem with pathogens acquiring resistance to antibiotics is the reason for the search for bactericidal substances against which microorganisms cannot become resistant. The aim of this study was to synthesize inorganic-organic nanohybrids and obtain materials with antimicrobial effects. Chitosan (CS) was deposited on nanocomposite carriers such as calcium oxide with titanium dioxide (CaO-TiO₂), magnesium oxide with titanium dioxide (MgO-TiO₂) and copper(II) oxide with titanium dioxide (CuO-TiO₂). The efficiency of the process was examined at varying concentrations of chitosan and temperature. The parameters for nanohybrids synthesis were selected based on the highest amount of nano-chitosan deposited on the nanohybrids-for each carrier, the process conditions were as follows: chitosan solution at 5 g l^-1and 20 °C. The materials were obtained using these parameters and were used for microbiological tests againstE. coliATCC 25922,S. aureusATCC 25923 andC. albicansATCC 10231. The growth inhibitory activity of the obtained materials was qualitatively defined. These results suggest that the synthesized nanohybrids and nanocomposites exhibit biostatic action. The material with the broadest effect was the CuO-TiO₂-CS hybrid, which had biostatic properties against all tested strains at a minimal concentration of 1250μg ml^-1. Further research is required to find eco-friendly, non-toxic, and more effective antimicrobials with a broad action to prevent the acquisition of resistance.

Recent Advancements in Enzyme‐Incorporated Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Mechanistic Formation and Applications

Over the past decade, nanotechnology has been developed and employed across various entities. Among the numerous nanostructured material types, enzyme‐incorporated nanomaterials have shown great potential in various fields, as an alternative to biologically derived as well as synthetically developed hybrid structures. The mechanism of incorporating enzyme onto a nanostructure depends on several factors including the method of immobilization, type of nanomaterial, as well as operational and environmental conditions. The prospects of enzyme‐incorporated nanomaterials have shown promising results across various applications, such as biocatalysts, biosensors, drug therapy, and wastewater treatment. This is due to their excellent ability to exhibit chemical and physical properties such as high surface‐to‐volume ratio, recovery and/or reusability rates, sensitivity, response scale, and stable catalytic activity across wide operating conditions. In this review, the evolution of enzyme‐incorporated nanomaterials along with their impact on our society due to its state‐of‐the‐art properties, and its significance across different industrial applications are discussed. In addition, the weakness and future prospects of enzyme‐incorporated nanomaterials were also discussed to guide scientists for futuristic research and development in this field.
