Livelihood vulnerability of rural households to climate variability and change: An agroecological system-based approach in northwestern Ethiopia

Ethiopia is widely acknowledged to be extremely vulnerable to climatic variability and change. Its agricultural sector, which is particularly susceptible to risks associated with rainfall variability, represents a major source of vulnerability. Household livelihood vulnerability varies across different agroecological zones (AEZs). This research aimed to investigate farmers' susceptibility to climate variability and change in northwestern Ethiopia. A total of 405 households from three AEZs (lowland, highland, and midland) were chosen through simple random sampling. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews were also conducted to complement and validate the numerical data. To assess the household vulnerability levels, the social, economic, and environmental indicators were aggregated, and the LVI and LVI-IPCC index were employed. The study's findings indicated significant variation in livelihood vulnerability indices, profiles, and indicators across agroecological zones (AEZs). The midland AEZ exhibited low exposure, higher adaptive capacity, and low vulnerability, while the lowland AEZ showed higher vulnerability, weaker adaptive capacity, and greater exposure compared to the midland and highland AEZs. The LVI-IPCC analysis corroborated these findings, with values of 0.128 for the midland AEZ, 0.168 for the highland, and 0.180 for the lowland. The variation is due to differences in agroecological and socioeconomic factors among households. The results indicate the necessity of implementing adaptation strategies specifically tailored to the agroecological systems in the study area. Such an approach is essential for effectively reducing vulnerability among households engaged in mixed crop-livestock agriculture. Adaptation measures developed from these assessments are both applicable and relevant to local conditions, as they are grounded in the community's long-term realities.

Ethnic Music Inheritance and Environmental Monitoring Using Big Data Analysis from the Cultural Perspective

Ethnic music has too many expectations due to its significance to the national culture. It serves as a mirror, reflecting all the true characteristics of many geographical areas and ethnic groupings. Instilling national self-confidence and fostering national unity are essential outcomes of this. The optimal design plan for Xinjiang folk music inheritance and environmental monitoring based on big data technology is presented in this study from the standpoint of cultural ecology. Big data technology can categorize users who are interested in Xinjiang ethnic music, and after that, through customized recommendation filtering, consumers may be presented with Xinjiang ethnic music that meets their interests. Last but not least, a simulation test and analysis are performed. The algorithm's accuracy is 7.86% higher than that of the conventional algorithm, according to the simulation data. By studying and calculating the user's behavioral traits and interests, this result demonstrates in detail how the recommender system can display the user's content efficiently. However, there are numerous possibilities and varied contexts for the use of clustering techniques in recommender systems. It is crucially vital for directing the protection of ethnic music and fostering the inheritance and development of ethnic culture to conduct design study on the Xinjiang region's ethnic music heritage and development with cultural ecology as the central guiding principle. This article is from "A comprehensive study of Uygur Muqam music art with Chinese characteristics," which aims to improve the data reserve of the world and Southeast Asia on the research of Chinese Uighur Muqam art. Improve the inheritance and development of music in Xinjiang, China, and provide more detailed data to more scholars. This study adopts qualitative research methods and field survey data. The author proposes to focus on the perspective of cultural ecology, based on the use of big data technology, to improve the inheritance and development of Xinjiang national music.

Risks and opportunities of assisted colonization: the perspectives of experts

Owing to climate change and other anthropogenic environmental changes, the suitability of locations is changing for many biota that consequently have to adapt in situ or to move to other areas. To mitigate the effects of such pressures, assisted colonization is a conservation tool developed to reduce extinction risks by intentionally moving and releasing an organism outside its native range, and thus, to facilitate tracking changing environmental conditions. This conservation tool has been proposed for threatened animals or plants that presumably cannot adapt in situ or follow environmental changes by dispersal or migration. However, there have been contentious debates about the shortcomings and risks of implementing assisted colonization. For this reason, we evaluated the specific opinions of global experts for assisted colonization on potential risks and opportunities that this approach offers. For this purpose, we used an online survey targeted at authors of scientific publications on assisted colonization. The majority (82%) of the 48 respondents were in favor of applying assisted colonization for species that are at risk of global extinction due to anthropogenic environmental change. Most respondents agreed that assisted colonization should be considered only when other conservation tools are not available and that certain preconditions must be met. Some of these were already highlighted in the IUCN guidelines for assisted colonization and include a completed risk assessment, clearly defined management plans and secured political as well as financial support. The advocacy of assisted colonization in response to anthropogenic global environmental changes was only weakly dependent on the geographic origin of the experts and their working background. Regarding possible risks, most of the respondents were concerned about consequences like failure of the long-term establishment of the translocated species and the transmission of diseases and invasiveness potentially endangering native biota. To keep these risks as low as possible most of the experts agreed that a target area must have a reasonable carrying capacity to sustain a minimum viable population and that adaptive management should be implemented. Careful evaluation of assisted colonization projects is required to generate further evidence that needs to be considered for further developing conservation tools for the Anthropocene.

Savannah Phenological Dynamics Reveal Spatio-Temporal Landscape Heterogeneity in Karamoja Sub-region, Uganda

Phenological properties are critical in understanding global environmental change patterns. This study analyzed phenological dynamics in a savannah dominated semi-arid environment of Uganda. We used moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer normalized difference vegetation index (MODIS NDVI) imagery. TIMESAT program was used to analyse the imagery to determine key phenological metrics; onset of greenness (OGT), onset of greenness value, end of greenness time (EGT), end of greenness value, maximum NDVI, time of maximum NDVI, duration of greenup (DOG) and range of normalized difference vegetation index (RNDVI). Results showed that thicket and shrubs had the earliest OGT on day 85 ± 14, EGT on day 244 ± 32 and a DOG of 158 ± 25 days. Woodland had the highest NDVI value for maximum NDVI, OGT, EGT, and RNDVI. In the bushland, OGT occurs on average around day 90 ± 11, EGT on day 255 ± 33 with a DOG of 163 ± 36 days. The grassland showed that OGT occurs on day 96 ± 13, EGT on day 252 ± 36 with a total DOG of 156 ± 33 days. Early photosynthesis activity was observed in central to eastern Karamoja in the districts of Moroto and Kotido. There was a positive relationship between rainfall and NDVI across all vegetation cover types as well as between phenological parameters and season dynamics. Vegetation senescence in the sub-region occurs around August to mid-September (day 244–253). The varied phenophases observed in the sub-region reveal an inherent landscape heterogeneity that is beneficial to extensive pastoral livestock production. Continuous monitoring of savannah phenological patterns in the sub-region is required to decipher landscape ecosystem processes and functioning.
