Airborne Fungal Spore Review, New Advances and Automatisation

Fungal spores make up a significant portion of Primary Biological Aerosol Particles (PBAPs) with large quantities of such particles noted in the air. Fungal particles are of interest because of their potential to affect the health of both plants and humans. They are omnipresent in the atmosphere year-round, with concentrations varying due to meteorological parameters and location. Equally, differences between indoor and outdoor fungal spore concentrations and dispersal play an important role in occupational health. This review attempts to summarise the different spore sampling methods, identify the most important spore types in terms of negative effects on crops and the public, the factors affecting their growth/dispersal, and different methods of predicting fungal spore concentrations currently in use.

Recent Advances in Monitoring, Sampling, and Sensing Techniques for Bioaerosols in the Atmosphere

Bioaerosols in the form of microscopic airborne particles pose pervasive risks to humans and livestock. As either fully active components (e.g., viruses, bacteria, and fungi) or as whole or part of inactive fragments, they are among the least investigated pollutants in nature. Their identification and quantification are essential to addressing related dangers and to establishing proper exposure thresholds. However, difficulties in the development (and selection) of detection techniques and an associated lack of standardized procedures make the sensing of bioaerosols challenging. Through a comprehensive literature search, this review examines the mechanisms of conventional and advanced bioaerosol detection methods. It also provides a roadmap for future research and development in the selection of suitable methodologies for bioaerosol detection. The development of sample collection and sensing technology make it possible for continuous and automated operation. However, intensive efforts should be put to overcome the limitations of current technology as most of the currently available options tend to suffer from lengthy sample acquisition times and/or nonspecificity of probe material.

Development and characterization of an inexpensive single-particle fluorescence spectrometer for bioaerosol monitoring

Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques to analyze atmospheric aerosols are commonly applied for research and human exposure monitoring, but are very expensive or offer poor spectral resolution. Here, we discuss how a recently proposed instrument can acquire resolved fluorescence spectra from many individual particles in a single camera image using four excitation wavelengths matched with common biological fluorophores for particle discrimination at lower cost. We discuss emission intensity calibration and demonstrate spectral differentiation among four species of pollen. These data provide context for how the instrument could be developed for pollen and mold-spore detection or for use by citizen scientists.
