Abstract
An emerging body of literature suggests that long-term gut inflammation may be a silent driver of Parkinson’s disease (PD) pathogenesis. Importantly, specific nutritive patterns might improve gut health for PD risk reduction. Here, we review the current literature on the nutritive patterns and inflammatory markers as a predictor for early detection of PD. This knowledge might be used to foster the detection of early nutritive patterns and preclinical biomarkers to potentially alter PD development and progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parkinson's disease (PD) in elderly patients is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease. The pathogenesis of PD is associated with dopaminergic neuron degeneration of the substantia nigra in the basal ganglia, causing classic motor symptoms. Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation have been identified as possible pathways in laboratory investigations. Nutrition, a potentially versatile factor from all environmental factors affecting PD, has received intense research scrutiny. METHODS A systematic search was conducted in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and WEB OF SCIENCE databases from 2000 until the present. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs), observational case-control studies, and follow-up studies were included. RESULTS We retrieved fifty-two studies that met the inclusion criteria. Most selected studies investigated the effects of malnutrition and the Mediterranean diet (MeDiet) on PD incidence and progression. Other investigations contributed evidence on the critical role of microbiota, vitamins, polyphenols, dairy products, coffee, and alcohol intake. CONCLUSIONS There are still many concerns regarding the association between PD and nutrition, possibly due to underlying genetic and environmental factors. However, there is a body of evidence revealing that correcting malnutrition, gut microbiota, and following the MeDiet reduced the onset of PD and reduced clinical progression. Other factors, such as polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and coffee intake, can have a potential protective effect. Conversely, milk and its accessory products can increase PD risk. Nutritional intervention is essential for neurologists to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the disease progression of PD.

Abstract
Human lifestyle and dietary behaviors contribute to disease onset and progression. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), considered multifactorial disorders, have been associated with changes in the gut microbiome. NDDs display pathologies that alter brain functions with a tendency to worsen over time. NDDs are a worldwide health problem; in the US alone, 12 million Americans will suffer from NDDs by 2030. While etiology may vary, the gut microbiome serves as a key element underlying NDD development and prognosis. In particular, an inflammation-associated microbiome plagues NDDs. Conversely, sequestration of this inflammatory microbiome by a correction in the dysbiotic state of the gut may render therapeutic effects on NDDs. To this end, treatment with short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria, the main metabolites responsible for maintaining gut homeostasis, ameliorates the inflammatory microbiome. This intimate pathological link between the gut and NDDs suggests that the gut-brain axis (GBA) acts as an underexplored area for developing therapies for NDDs. Traditionally, the classification of NDDs depends on their clinical presentation, mostly manifesting as extrapyramidal and pyramidal movement disorders, with neuropathological evaluation at autopsy as the gold standard for diagnosis. In this review, we highlight the evolving notion that GBA stands as an equally sensitive pathological marker of NDDs, particularly in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and chronic stroke. Additionally, GBA represents a potent therapeutic target for treating NDDs.

Abstract
In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), gastrointestinal dysfunction occurs from the early stages of the disease and even in the pre-motor phase. This condition can include the entire digestive tract, with symptoms ranging from delays in gastric emptying to dysphagia, constipation and even malnutrition. Excess saliva accumulates in the mouth due to the low frequency of swallowing. Dysphagia develops in about 50% of patients and may be a reflection of both central nervous system and enteric nervous system disorder. Gastroparesis can cause a variety of symptoms, including nausea, and also may be responsible for some of the motor fluctuations observed with levodopa therapy. Intestinal dysfunction in PD may be the result of both delayed colon transit and impaired anorectal muscle coordination. In addition, recent studies have demonstrated the role of Helicobacter pylori infection in the pathogenesis of diseases but also the occurrence of motor fluctuations by affecting the absorption of anti-parkinsonian medication. In this review, the main gastrointestinal dysfunctions associated with PD are presented.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The clinical symptoms and nutritional status of patients with Parkinson's disease (PwP) are interrelated, and the clinical outcomes in malnourished patients are often poor. Only a few studies have reviewed the prevalence of malnutrition and nutrition-related risk factors in PwP. OBJECTIVE To explore the prevalence of malnutrition/ malnutrition risk among PwP, and estimate nutrition-related risk factors. METHODS PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched. Literatures published between 1 January 1995 and 1 November 2020, subjects were patients with idiopathic PD underwent Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) were included. RESULT Sixteen articles, including 1650 PwP from 13 countries/regions, were included in the meta-analysis. The prevalence of malnutrition and malnutrition risk were 8.8% (Confidence interval [CI] 95%, 5.3%-12.2%) and 35.3% (CI 95%, 29.0%-41.7%), and the prevalence of nutritional disorders was 42.3% (CI 95%, 33.7%-51%). The prevalence of malnutrition in developing countries was higher than that in the developed countries. Meta-analysis reveals there were significant differences in the course of the disease (0.88 years; 95% CI, 0.26-1.50), levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD; 60.77 mg/day; 95% CI, 2.7-118.8), Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) staging (0.323; CI 95%, 0.164-0.482), and unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS) scores (total: 13.66, CI 95%: 10.57-16.75 and part III: 5.52, CI 95%: 3.79-7.25) between normal and nutritional disorder groups. CONCLUSIONS Malnutrition/malnutrition risk prevalence in PwP are high. The duration of the disease, LEDD, H&Y staging, and UPDRS score (part III and total) may be nutrition-related risk factors in PwP.

Abstract
Non-motor symptoms (NMSs) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and can precede, sometimes for several years. NMSs include, other than gastrointestinal symptoms like constipation and dysphagia, also hyposmia, weight loss and osteosarcopenia. These three NMSs seem to be inter-related and affect patients' health and quality of life. Unfortunately, patients with these symptoms usually are not initially seen by a neurologist, and by the time they are consulted, nearly ~ 80% of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra have died. To date, no guidelines exist for screening, assessment and management of NMSs in general. A better understanding of these specific NMSs, likely in the context of others, will make it possible to approach and optimise the treatment of the motor symptoms thereby enhancing the welfare of PD patients. Identifying the NMSs could be very helpful, and among them, hyposmia, weight loss and osteosarcopenia may play an important role in solving the limitations in the diagnosis of PD. A strict collaboration between general practitioners, clinicians, geriatricians and neurologists can be one approach towards the diagnosis of pre-PD. Waiting until the motor symptoms develop and the patient is finally visited by the neurologist could be too late, considering the catastrophic prognosis of the disease.

Abstract
Although moderate concentrations of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are crucial for various physiological processes within the human body, their overproduction leads to oxidative stress, defined as the imbalance between the production and accumulation of ROS and the ability of the body to neutralize and eliminate them. In the brain, oxidative stress exhibits significant effects, due to its increased metabolical activity and limited cellular regeneration. Thus, oxidative stress is a major factor in the progressive loss of neurons structures and functions, leading to the development of severe neurodegenerative disorders. In this context, recent years have witnessed tremendous advancements in the field of antioxidant therapies, with a special emphasis for neuroprotection. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the oxidative stress and antioxidant defense mechanisms and to present the most recent studies on antioxidant therapies for neuroprotection.
