Safety analysis of adapted battery-powered ride-on toy car for children with disabilities using a modified test dummy with varying joint stiffness

Adaptive ride-on toy programs have increased in popularity in recent years and provide novel rehabilitation tools as developmental aids for children with disabilities. While the adaptations made to these toys are intended to provide a safer experience for children with disabilities, safety concerns still exist. Within this context, the purpose of this study was to use a model with varying joint stiffness as a first-order approximation of a child with disabilities and to investigate whether modifications to ride-on toys are sufficient to prevent common injuries. Because the population of children with disabilities who are receiving adaptive ride-on toys have a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders, those with both decreased and increased muscle stiffness were considered in this safety study. A 5-point harness reduced movement regardless of change in joint stiffness and therefore, results from this study indicate that the use of these harnesses is effective regardless of joint stiffness. Furthermore, as excursion-related injuries are considered more critical to the user than injuries relating to kinetic variables and no known injury thresholds were exceeded, the addition of a belt is considered a necessary trade-off with little-to-no added risk.

Research on Visual Perception of Speed Bumps for Intelligent Connected Vehicles Based on Lightweight FPNet

In the field of intelligent connected vehicles, the precise and real-time identification of speed bumps is critically important for the safety of autonomous driving. To address the issue that existing visual perception algorithms struggle to simultaneously maintain identification accuracy and real-time performance amidst image distortion and complex environmental conditions, this study proposes an enhanced lightweight neural network framework, YOLOv5-FPNet. This framework strengthens perception capabilities in two key phases: feature extraction and loss constraint. Firstly, FPNet, based on FasterNet and Dynamic Snake Convolution, is developed to adaptively extract structural features of distorted speed bumps with accuracy. Subsequently, the C3-SFC module is proposed to augment the adaptability of the neck and head components to distorted features. Furthermore, the SimAM attention mechanism is embedded within the backbone to enhance the ability of key feature extraction. Finally, an adaptive loss function, Inner-WiseIoU, based on a dynamic non-monotonic focusing mechanism, is designed to improve the generalization and fitting ability of bounding boxes. Experimental evaluations on a custom speed bumps dataset demonstrate the superior performance of FPNet, with significant improvements in key metrics such as the mAP, mAP50_95, and FPS by 38.76%, 143.15%, and 51.23%, respectively, compared to conventional lightweight neural networks. Ablation studies confirm the effectiveness of the proposed improvements. This research provides a fast and accurate speed bump detection solution for autonomous vehicles, offering theoretical insights for obstacle recognition in intelligent vehicle systems.

Effect of Traffic Calming in a Downtown District of Szczecin, Poland

The increasing use of road vehicles has caused a number of transport and environmental issues throughout the world. To cope with them, traffic calming schemes are being increasingly implemented in built-up areas. An example of such schemes are Tempo-30 zones. The traffic calming measures applied as part of this scheme must be carefully planned in terms of location and design details in order to obtain the desired reduction in speed, traffic volume and exhaust emissions and, last but foremost, to increase the safety and facilitate the movement of vulnerable road users. The coexistence and combined effect of these measures and their design details must also be taken into account. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the applied traffic calming measures had a considerable bearing on the reduction in speed to the desired level, as assumed in the traffic calming plan. Three street sections starting and ending with different intersection types were chosen to examine the synergy of the applied traffic calming measures. The numbers and speeds of vehicles were measured in three day-long continuous surveys. As it was expected, the amount of speed reduction depended on the hourly traffic volume on a one-way street and various other traffic engineering aspects. The obtained results may be used to modify the existing speed profile models and can guide traffic engineers in choosing the most effective traffic calming measures.

The Effectiveness of Selected Devices to Reduce the Speed of Vehicles on Pedestrian Crossings

Accidents involving pedestrians often result in serious injury or death. The main goal of this conducted research is to evaluate selected devices that will help reduce the speed of vehicles on pedestrian crossings. Many devices from a group of “speed control measures” and “mid block tools” (refugee islands, speed tables, and raised pedestrian crossings) are examined to find the most effective ones. In our research, the range of reduction of a vehicle’s speed is used as a main measure of effectiveness, but a wider statistical analysis was conducted as well. One of the results of the research is the identification of three categories of devices referred to as high effectives (good), medium effectives (intermediate), and low or lack of effectives (bad). The content of the paper starts by highlighting the reasons to reduce the vehicle’s speed on pedestrian crossings (as an introduction). Next, we present the description of devices used to reduce the vehicle’s speed with a presentation of the research of their effectiveness. The studies that have been conducted are described in the following chapters: first, the characteristic of method and location, second, with discussion, the results of research and identification of the three categories of devices. The paper is then summarized by conclusions and comments. The research only covered the issues of road traffic engineering. The research was made in Poland, but the conclusions could be useful worldwide due to similar traffic rules and technical solutions.

A Series of Vertical Deflections, a Promising Traffic Calming Measure: Analysis and Recommendations for Spacing

Traffic calming measures (TCM) are placed in urban areas to improve road safety, and among them, vertical TCMs are widely employed. Many researches are focused on the influence of the geometry of each measure on speed reduction, but it is demonstrated that drivers forget its effect and speed up after it. Therefore, placing consecutive TCMs can help to maintain a safe area. However, scarce literature can be found about the adequate spacing between them. Hence, the aim of this paper is to analyze the adequate distance between TCMs. Various streets with variable distances and different vertical TCMs were evaluated in Poland and Spain, including raised crosswalks, raised intersections, speed humps and speed cushions. The intermediate point between two TCMs was selected as the place where the maximum speed is achieved. Results showed that there was a good correlation between the speeds at intermediate points and the distance between TCMs, with a determination coefficient around 0.80. For an 85th percentile of the speed under 50 km/h, a maximum distance of 200 m between TCMs is recommended, and for a value of 40 km/h, 75 m.
