Drivers with child passengers: distracted but cautious?

Key factors associated with parents' illegal engagement with their smartphones while driving their children

This study aimed to examine the key factors associated with parents' and caregivers' illegal engagement with their smartphones while driving with their children aged 10 years and younger. Five hundred and ten participants completed an online survey (M = 40.4 years, SD = 6.9, Range = 20.0-69.0 years; Female: 79.2%). Most participants reported that they 'never' accessed social media, talked or composed a text on their smartphone (while handheld) while driving with their children (88.0%, 85.3%, and 80.0%, respectively). However, it was interesting to note that more than one-quarter of the sample reported that they had read a text message or used an app on their handheld smartphone while driving their children (36.3%, and 28.6%, respectively). The results of a logistic regression model showed that participants': age, severity of nomophobia (the fear of being without a mobile phone), and self-reported engagement in other risky driving behaviours (i.e., errors, violations) were significantly associated with illegal engagement with their smartphone while driving their child aged 10 years and younger. With the growing prevalence of mobile phone use and the impact of distraction due to child occupants, it is important to consider the compounded effect of these factors on driver performance, as well as the influence of driver risk-taking behaviour while engaging with smartphones and the consequences of this on children who observe this behaviour.

Driving under the influence of substances and motor vehicle fatalities among older adults in the United States

OBJECTIVE

This study examines contribution of substance use (including alcohol, cannabinoids, stimulants, narcotics, depressants, and hallucinogens) on the probability of drivers being at-fault for a crash on U.S. public roads, with specific emphasis on older adult drivers.

METHODS

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) for the years 2010-2018 were employed for 87,060 drivers (43,530 two-vehicle crash pairs) involved in two moving vehicle crashes. The quasi-induced exposure (QIE) method was used to compute the relative crash involvement ratios (CIRs) for each relevant substance and illicit drug. Mixed-effect generalized linear regression models were fit to examine the effect of substance use on the probability of a driver being at-fault for a crash.

RESULTS

There were 75.51% males and 73.88% Non-Hispanic Whites in our sample. The CIR for those aged 70-79 years was 1.17, and more than double (2.56) for the ≥80 years old drivers, while being relatively low among drivers of ages 20 to 69. Substance use, in general, disproportionately increased the probability of being at-fault during a crash, regardless of driver's age. Though older drivers are less likely than other age groups to report substance use, presence of substances among older drivers increased the probability of their being at-fault two to four times during a crash across almost all substances. The regression models, after adjusting for driver's sex, road grade, weather, light conditions, distraction, and speeding at time of crash, revealed that older drug-impaired drivers were twice as likely to be at fault in a fatal crash (aOR = 1.947; 95% CI = 1.821, 2.082; <0.0001) compared to their middle-aged counterparts. Similarly, most substance use categories were responsible for the probabilities of higher CIRs among the drivers.

CONCLUSION

These findings necessitate continued efforts to bring awareness to the deadly consequences of "drugged driving," especially among older adult drivers.

The prevalence and excess mortality risk of driving with children

INTRODUCTION

The presence of passengers can affect the driving behavior of motor-vehicle operators. Child passengers present unique motivations to drive more safely, as well as opportunities to distract drivers. Because motor-vehicle crashes are an important cause of premature childhood mortality, this study assesses whether adult drivers with child passengers are more or less likely to cause a fatal crash.

METHOD

Data include fatal crashes involving one or two vehicles from 2007 to 2017 in the U.S. Fatality Analysis Reporting System. We apply methods developed by Levitt and Porter (2001) and Dunn and Tefft (2020) -the LPDT approach- to estimate the risk that adult drivers (21 years or older) with at least one child passenger (15 year or younger) cause a fatal crash relative to adults without child passengers.

RESULTS

Childhood crash exposure when traveling with an adult driver is low: 0.78% of vehicle miles traveled by adults included a child passenger. Nevertheless, adult drivers with child passengers were significantly more likely to cause a fatal crash than adult drivers without child passengers. The estimated risk of causing a single-vehicle crash was 6.2 times higher among the full sample of adults, 7.2 times higher among female drivers, and 5.0 times higher among drivers 25-44 years old.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite their relatively low crash exposure, child passengers are associated with much greater risk of causing a fatal crash.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

This study not only informs about the need to develop interventions to remind parents and adult drivers of the risks associated with driving children, but also reminds researchers about the enormous potential of the LPDT approach when applied to traffic safety issues.

Analyzing driver behavior under naturalistic driving conditions: A review

For a decade, researchers working in the area of road safety have started exploring the use of driving behavior data for a better understanding of the causes related to road accidents. A review of the literature reveals the excellent potential of naturalistic driving studies carried out by collecting vehicle performance data and driver behavior data during normal, impaired, and safety-critical situations. An in-depth understanding of driver behavior helps analyze and implement pre-crash safety measures - the development of enforcement policies, infrastructure design, and intelligent vehicle safety systems. The present paper attempts to review the naturalistic driving studies that have been undertaken so far. The paper begins with an overview of different methods for collecting unobtrusive driver behavior data during their day to day trip, followed by a discussion of various factors affecting driving behavior and their influence on vehicle performance parameters. The paper also discusses the strategies mentioned in the literature for improving driving behavior using naturalistic driving studies to enhance road safety. Some of the major findings of this review suggest that i) driver behavior is a major cause in the majority of the road accidents ii) drivers generally reduce their speed and increases headway as a compensatory measure to reduce the workload imposed during distracting activity and adverse weather conditions iii) mobile phone has emerged as a potential device for collecting naturalistic driving data and, iv) improvement in driving behavior can be achieved by providing feedback to the drivers about their driving behavior. This can be done by implementing usage-based insurance schemes such as pay as you drive (PAYD), pay how you drive (PHYD), and manage how you drive (MHYD). While a considerable amount of research has been done to analyze driving behavior under naturalistic conditions, some areas which are yet to be explored are highlighted in the present paper.
