Driving risk identification of urban arterial and collector roads based on multi-scale data

Urban arterial and collector roads, while interconnected within the urban transportation network, serve distinct purposes, leading to different driving risk profiles. Investigating these differences using advanced methods is of paramount significance. This study aims to achieve this by primarily collecting and processing relevant vehicle trajectory data alongside driver-vehicle-road-environment data. A comprehensive risk assessment matrix is constructed to assess driving risks, incorporating multiple conflict and traffic flow indicators with statistically temporal stability. The Entropy weight-TOPSIS method and the K-means algorithm are employed to determine the risk scores and levels of the target arterial and collector roads. Using risk levels as the outcome variables and multi-scale features as the explanatory variables, random parameters models with heterogeneity in means and variances are developed to identify the determinants of driving risks at different levels. Likelihood ratio tests and comparisons of out-of-sample and within-sample prediction are conducted. Results reveal significant statistical differences in the risk profiles between arterial and collector roads. The marginal effects of significant parameters are then calculated separately for arterial and collector roads, indicating that several factors have different impacts on the probability of risk levels for arterial and collector roads, such as the number of movable elements in road landscape pictures, the standard deviation of the vehicle's lateral acceleration, the average standard deviation of speed for all vehicles on the road segment, and the number of one-way lanes on the road segment. Some practical implications are provided based on the findings. Future research can be implemented by expanding the collected data to different regions and cities over longer periods.

Investigating the impact of temporal instability in smart roadway retrofitting on terrain-related crash injury severity

The advancement of intelligent road systems in developing countries poses unique challenges in identifying risk factors and implementing safety strategies. The variability of factors affecting crash injury severity leads to different risks across levels of roadway smartness, especially in hazardous terrains, complicating the adaptation of smart technologies. Therefore, this study investigates the temporal instability of factors affecting injury severities in crashes across various terrains, with a focus on the evolution of road smartness. Crash data from selected complex terrain regions in Shaanxi Province during smart road adaptation were used, and categorized into periods before, during, and after smart road implementations. A series of mixed logit models were employed to account for unobserved heterogeneity in mean and variance, and likelihood ratio tests were conducted to assess the spatio-temporal instability of model parameters across different topographic settings and smart processes. Moreover, a comparison between partially constrained and unconstrained temporal modeling approaches was made. The findings reveal significant differences in injury severity determinants across terrain conditions as roadway intelligence progressed. On the other hand, certain factors like pavement damage, truck and pedestrian involvement were identified that had relatively stable effects on crash injury severities. Out-of-sample predictions further emphasize the need for modeling across terrain and roadway development stages. These insights are crucial for developing tailored safety measures for smart road retrofitting in different terrain conditions, thereby supporting the transition towards smarter road systems in developing regions.

Modeling of single-vehicle and multi-vehicle truck-involved crashes injury severities: A comparative and temporal analysis in a developing country

Truck-involved crashes persist as a significant concern, yielding noteworthy human casualties and causing economic ramifications, particularly in developing countries. This paper aims to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the associated factors influencing injury severity in truck-involved crashes, with a particular emphasis on discerning variations between single-vehicle and multi-vehicle incidents, as well as accounting for heterogeneity and temporal stability. The data analysis involves a meticulous examination of crash data spanning the entirety of Thailand from 2017 to 2020. Employing three distinct levels of injury severities, namely PDO injury, moderate injury, and severe injury, the study employs a series of mixed logit models that account for unobserved heterogeneity in both means and variances. Results revealed significant instability in injury risk determinants over time among both single and multi-vehicle events. Aligning predictive assessments further spotlighted fluctuations in projected burdens across models and years - collectively underscoring the imperative to integrate temporal considerations into modeling and prevention. Several crash-type distinctions and priorities emerged. For single-truck events, key risks included roadway alignments and geometry, speeding, fatigue, and lighting conditions. However multi-truck collisions concentrated around exposure factors like highway traits, sightline limitations, and vulnerable road users. Ultimately, the technique permitted responsive countermeasure targeting and recalibration opportunities keyed to each crash form's evolving landscapes. While it is indeed noteworthy that several variables have exhibited instability in their effects, it is equally important to acknowledge the existence of certain variables that maintain a relative degree of temporal stability. This underscores their pivotal role in shaping the foundation of enduring strategies aimed at enhancing traffic safety in the long run. The multifaceted investigation constitutes an invaluable reference for diverse transportation stakeholders seeking to curb rising truck fatalities through evidence-based improvements in policy, engineering, usage protocols, and technologies. It provides a blueprint for nimble safety planning within complex modernizing road systems.

Efficient and robust estimation of single-vehicle crash severity: A mixed logit model with heterogeneity in means and variances

This study delves into the factors that contribute to the severity of single-vehicle crashes, focusing on enhancing both computational speed and model robustness. Utilizing a mixed logit model with heterogeneity in means and variances, we offer a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding crash severity. The analysis is grounded in a dataset of 39,788 crash records from the UK's STATS19 database, which includes variables such as road type, speed limits, and lighting conditions. A comparative evaluation of estimation methods, including pseudo-random, Halton, and scrambled and randomized Halton sequences, demonstrates the superior performance of the latter. Specifically, our estimation approach excels in goodness-of-fit, as measured by ρ2, and in minimizing the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), all while optimizing computational resources like run time and memory usage. This strategic efficiency enables more thorough and credible analyses, rendering our model a robust tool for understanding crash severity. Policymakers and researchers will find this study valuable for crafting data-driven interventions aimed at reducing road crash severity.

Factors affecting injury severity in motorcycle crashes: Different age groups analysis using Catboost and SHAP techniques

OBJECTIVE

Motorcycle crashes often result in severe injuries on roads that affect people's lives physically, financially, and psychologically. These injuries could be notably harmful to drivers of all age groups. The main objective of this study is to investigate the risk factors contributing to the severity of crash injuries in different age groups.

METHODS

This Objective is achieved by developing accurate machine learning (ML) based prediction models. This research examines the relationship between potential risk factors of motorcycle-associated crashes using (ML) and Shapley Additive explanations (SHAP) technique. The SHAP technique further helped interpreting ML methods for traffic injury severity prediction. It indicates the significant non-linear interactions between dependent and independent variables. The data for this study was collected from the Provincial Emergency Response Service RESCUE 1122 for the Rawalpindi region (Pakistan) over three years (from 2017 to 2020). The Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) is employed to balance injury severity classes in the pre-processing phase.

RESULTS

The results demonstrate that age, gender, posted speed limit, the number of lanes, and month of the year are positively associated with severe and fatal injuries. This research also assesses how the modeling framework varies between the ML and classical statistical methods. The predictive performance of proposed ML models was assessed using several evaluation metrics, and it is found that Catboost outperformed the XGBoost, Random Forest (RF) and Multinomial Logit (MNL) model.

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study will assist road users, road safety authorities, stakeholders, policymakers, and decision-makers in obtaining substantial and essential guidance for reducing the severity of crash injuries in Pakistan and other countries with prevailing conditions.

Severity of vehicle-to-vehicle accidents in the UAE: An exploratory analysis using machine learning algorithms

The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies road traffic injuries as a global health problem. The Eastern-Mediterranean region is particularly suffering from low traffic safety levels, recording the third highest death per capita ratio in the world. It is critical to evaluate and understand the causes of crashes and their severity levels as a first step to devising policies that aim to reduce these causes. Previous studies examining the frequency or severity of crashes present important limitations that motivate the need for the current work. While these studies have investigated the relation of contributing factors to severity of crashes, not until recently the importance of these factors are bring investigated. Even then, less research have explored various Machine Learning models and none in the middle-eastern region. This is critical because the WHO report concludes that the chances of dying in a traffic crash in this region are second only to Africa per 100000 population. This is a first study analyzing the severity of vehicle-to-vehicle crashes among drivers in the United Arab Emirates. Traffic Crash Data was obtained from the Abu Dhabi Police, which consisted of 11,400 observations during the period 2014-2017. Machine learning algorithms, including gradient boosting (GB), support vector machines (SVM), and random forest (RF), were trained and tested to predict crash severity and extract (using feature analysis) its determinants. The models were evaluated using two performance metrics: prediction accuracy and F1-scores. The RF model outperformed both GB and SVM, with the confusion matrix of RF reporting a better prediction for all four crash severity classes. The feature importance analysis indicates that the age of car, age of the injured, and the age of the initiator have the highest effect on severity, which is an important finding as the listed factors were rarely considered in previous studies. Vehicle and road characteristics such as vehicle class, crash type, and lighting are slightly associated with the severity. Consistent with other studies, gender was the least essential predictor of severity. Recommendations are finally provided to the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (AD-DMT) authority to guide the development of road safety policies and countermeasures to mitigate the occurrence and severity of crashes.

Differences in single-vehicle motorcycle crashes caused by distraction and overspeed behaviors: considering temporal shifts and unobserved heterogeneity in prediction

Distraction and overspeed behaviors are acknowledged as two significant contributors to single-vehicle motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities resulting from which are severe and critical issues in Pakistan. To explore the temporal instability and differences in the factors determining the injury severities between single-vehicle motorcycle crashes caused by distraction and overspeed behaviors, this study estimated two groups of random parameter logit models with heterogeneity in means and variances. Single-vehicle motorcycle crash data in Rawalpindi city between 2017 and 2019 was used for model estimation, and a wide variety of explanatory variables relating to the rider, roadways, environments, and temporal attributes was simulated in the models. The current study considered three possible crash injury severity outcomes: minor injury, severe injury and fatal injury. Likelihood ratio tests were conducted to explore the temporal instability and non-transferability. Marginal effects were also calculated to further reveal temporal instability of the variables. Except for several variables, the most significant factors reported temporal instability and non-transferability, manifested as the effects varied from year to year and across different crashes. Moreover, out-of-sample prediction was also implemented to capture temporal instability and non-transferability between distraction and overspeed crash observations. The non-transferability between motorcycle crashes caused by distraction and overspeed behaviors provides insights into developing differentiated countermeasures and policies targeted at preventing and mitigating single-vehicle motorcycle crashes caused by the two risk-taking behaviors.

Investigating the effect of road condition and vacation on crash severity using machine learning algorithms

Investigating the contributing factors to traffic crash severity is a demanding topic in research focusing on traffic safety and policies. This research investigates the impact of 16 roadway condition features and vacations (along with the spatial and temporal factors and road geometry) on crash severity for major intra-city roads in Saudi Arabia. We used a crash dataset that covers four years (Oct. 2016 - Feb. 2021) with more than 59,000 crashes. Machine learning algorithms were utilized to predict the crash severity outcome (non-fatal/fatal) for three types of roads: single, multilane, and freeway. Furthermore, features that have a strong impact on crash severity were examined. Results show that only 4 out of 16 road condition variables were found to be contributing to crash severity, namely: paints, cat eyes, fence side, and metal cable. Additionally, vacation was found to be a contributing factor to crash severity, meaning crashes that occur on vacation are more severe than non-vacation days.

Exploring weather-related factors affecting the delay caused by traffic incidents: Mitigating the negative effect of traffic incidents

BACKGROUND

Existing studies mainly focus on the relationship between real-time weather and traffic crash injury severity, while few scholars have investigated the operation risk levels caused by traffic incidents. Identifying weather-related factors that affect the incident-induced delay is helpful for estimating the delay levels when an incident occurs. Accordingly, the present study profoundly explores the relationship between weather conditions and traffic delays caused by traffic incidents.

METHODS

The traffic incident and weather datasets from January 1 to December 31, 2020, in New York State are used. To that end, the hazard-based duration and multinomial logit modeling frameworks are employed to determine the effect of weather conditions on the duration of traffic delay and the delay severity, respectively. More importantly, to account for multiple layers of unobserved heterogeneity, a random parameter with heterogeneity in means approach is introduced into the above two models.

RESULTS

(1) The strong breeze (wind speed over 8 m/s) and low visibility (visibility under 5 km) significantly affect the duration of delay. (2) Hot day (between 20 and 30 °C) has a 344.03 % greater probability of minor delay. A strong breeze has a higher probability of severe delay. The low visibility is found to increase the estimated odds of moderate delay and severe delay by 51.15 % and 13.39 %, respectively. In comparison, the normal visibility (between 10 and 20 km) significantly decreases the estimated odds of severe delay by 119.17 %.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with other weather factors, wind speed, temperature, and visibility have the greatest impact on the traffic delay levels after a traffic accident, and there are significant differences in the impact under different delay severity. Findings from this study will help policymakers to establish comprehensive differentiating security measures to resolve traffic delays.

Analyzing the impact of curve and slope on multi-vehicle truck crash severity on mountainous freeways

Many studies examine the road characteristics that impact the severity of truck crash accidents. However, some only analyze the effect of curves or slopes separately, ignoring their combination. Therefore, there are nine types of the combination of curve and slope in this study. The combination of curve and slope factor that affected the injury severity of truck crashes on mountainous freeways was examined using a correlated random parameter logit model. This method is applied to evaluate the correlation between the random parameters and those that exhibit unobserved heterogeneity. Also, the multinomial logit model and traditional random parameter logit model are used. The study's data were collected from multi-vehicle truck crashes on mountainous freeways in China. The results showed that the correlated random parameters logit model was better than the others. In addition, they demonstrated a correlation between the random parameters. Based on the estimation coefficients and marginal effects, the combination of curve and slope has a great influence on the injury severity of truck crashes. The main finding is that curve with medium radius and medium slope will significantly increase the probability of medium severity comparing to curve with high radius and flat slope. On the other hand, the injury severity of truck accidents was significantly impacted by crash type, vehicle type, surface condition, time of day, season, lighting condition, pavement type, and guardrail. Variables such as sideswipe, head-on, medium trucks, morning, dawn or dusk and summertime reduced the probability of truck crashes. Rollover, winter, gravel, and guardrail variables increased the risk of truck crashes. Correlations were also discovered between a rollover and dry surface condition and rollover and gravel pavement type. The research findings will help traffic officials determine effective countermeasures to decrease the severity of truck crashes on mountainous freeways.

A data fusion approach of police-hospital linked data to examine injury severity of motor vehicle crashes

Injury severity studies typically rely on police-reported crash data to examine risk factors associated with traffic injuries. The police crash database includes essential information on roadways, crashes and driver-vehicle characteristics but may not contain accurate and sufficient information on traffic injuries. Despite sizable efforts on injury severity modelling, very few studies have employed hospital records to classify injury severities accurately. As such, the inferences drawn from the police-recorded injury severity classifications may be questionable. This study investigates factors affecting road traffic injuries of motor vehicle crashes in two approaches (1) police-reported injury severity data and (2) a data fusion approach linking police and hospital records. Data from 2015 to 2019 were collected from the Abu Dhabi Traffic Police Department and linked with hospital records by the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi. A total of 6,333 casualty crashes were categorised into non-severe, severe, and fatal crashes following police-reported data and non-hospitalised, hospitalised and fatal crashes based on the police-hospital linked data. The state-of-the-art random thresholds random parameters hierarchical ordered Probit models were then employed to examine the differences in factors affecting crash-injury severities between police-reported and police-hospital linked data. While there are similarities between these two approaches, there are numerous notable differences in injury severity factors. For instance, head-on collisions are associated with high crash-injury severities in the model with police-hospital linked data, but they tend to show low injury severities in the model with police-reported data. In addition, the police-reported approach identifies that crashes occurred in remote areas and angle collisions are associated with low injury severities, which is not intuitive. These findings highlight that modelling the misclassified injury severity in police crash data may lead to wrong estimations and misleading inferences. Instead, the data fusion approach of police-hospital linked data provides critical and accurate insights into road traffic injuries and is a valuable approach for understanding traffic injuries.

Risky behavior analysis for cross-border drivers: A logit model and qualitative comparative analysis of odds of fault and injury vulnerability in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau

INTRODUCTION

Due to globalization and the acceleration of cross-border exchanges, cross-border risk behaviors have received widespread attention. Previous research has concluded that foreign cross-border drivers engage in relatively more risk-taking behavior patterns and are likely to experience a higher crash rate or be more inclined to cause severe crashes. However, there is little evidence on the comparison of drivers who belong to the same ethnic group driving across within-country borders.

METHOD

Based on the cross-border motor-vehicle crash reports in 2006-2010 from the Road Traffic Accident Database of the China Ministry of Public Security, this paper examines the risk factors of being at fault and getting killed or seriously injured in cross-border traffic crashes and casual paths toward crash liability and injury severity for Hong Kong and Macao drivers driving in the Chinese mainland.

RESULTS

There are extremely complex factors behind drivers from Hong Kong and Macao causing at-fault crashes or sustaining fatal and serious injuries in the Chinese mainland. Factors such as gender, age, illumination, and weather conditions do not individually affect the risk of driver at-fault crashes or severe casualties in the crashes among Hong Kong and Macao drivers driving in the Chinese mainland. Nonetheless, collectively, these factors influence them along with different vehicle types, roads, and environmental factors.

CONCLUSIONS

This paper provides more theoretical findings for understanding the compound effect of multiple risk factors involving cross-border at-fault crashes or serious casualties. The conclusions of this research are valuable as representative references for cross-border risk management policies.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

To reduce the effects of different factors on cross-border risky driving behaviors and/or injurious crashes, various measures should be focused on, including specialized driver training, enhancement of the roads/environment, development of effective road safety campaigns, and directives facilitating cross-border cooperation in the field of road safety.

On random-parameter count models for out-of-sample crash prediction: Accounting for the variances of random-parameter distributions

One challenge faced by the random-parameter count models for crash prediction is the unavailability of unique coefficients for out-of-sample observations. The means of the random-parameter distributions are typically used without explicit consideration of the variances. In this study, by virtue of the Taylor series expansion, we proposed a straightforward yet analytic solution to include both the means and variances of random parameters for unbiased prediction. We then theoretically quantified the systematic bias arising from the omission of the variances of random parameters. Our numerical experiment further demonstrated that simply using the means of random parameters to predict the number of crashes for out-of-sample observations is fundamentally incorrect, which necessarily results in the underprediction of crash counts. Given the widespread use and ongoing prevalence of the random-parameter approach in crash analysis, special caution should be taken to avoid this silent pitfall when applying it for predictive purposes.

Crash severity analysis of vulnerable road users using machine learning

Road crash fatality is a universal problem of the transportation system. A massive death toll caused annually due to road crash incidents, and among them, vulnerable road users (VRU) are endangered with high crash severity. This paper focuses on employing machine learning-based classification approaches for modelling injury severity of vulnerable road users-pedestrian, bicyclist, and motorcyclist. Specifically, this study aims to analyse critical features associated with different VRU groups-for pedestrian, bicyclist, motorcyclist and all VRU groups together. The critical factor of crash severity outcomes for these VRU groups is estimated in identifying the similarities and differences across different important features associated with different VRU groups. The crash data for the study is sourced from the state of Queensland in Australia for the years 2013 through 2019. The supervised machine learning algorithms considered for the empirical analysis includes the K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF). In these models, 17 distinct road crash parameters are considered as input features to train models, which originate from road user characteristics, weather and environment, vehicle and driver condition, period, road characteristics and regions, traffic, and speed jurisdiction. These classification models are separately trained and tested for individual and unified VRU to assess crash severity levels. Afterwards, model performances are compared with each other to justify the best classifier where Random Forest classification models for all VRU modes are found to be comparatively robust in test accuracy: (motorcyclist: 72.30%, bicyclist: 64.45%, pedestrian: 67.23%, unified VRU: 68.57%). Based on the Random Forest model, the road crash features are ranked and compared according to their impact on crash severity classification. Furthermore, a model-based partial dependency of each road crash parameters on the severity levels is plotted and compared for each individual and unified VRU. This clarifies the tendency of road crash parameters to vary with different VRU crash severity. Based on the outcome of the comparative analysis, motorcyclists are found to be more likely exposed to higher crash severity, followed by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Assessing the Road Traffic Crashes among Novice Female Drivers in Saudi Arabia

Background: Recently (in 2018), females were legally allowed to drive and use automobiles in Saudi Arabia (SA) for the first time. This study investigated and analyzed the general fear of driving (GFDS), perceived self-confidence (PSCR), socio-economic variables, demographic distribution, and self-reported RTCs in novice female drivers from SA. Methods: The work was based on survey responses from 9608 participants from the first generation of female drivers from SA. Factor analysis was used to extract GFDS and PSCR scales. Results: Cronbach’s α values of 0.781 and 0.800 were observed for GFDS and PSCR, respectively. Logistic regression was employed to model road traffic collisions (RTCs) as a function of all significant variables. The results showed that of the 17.4% of geographically distributed respondents who reported RTCs, only 4% reported severe or minor injuries, and the rest (96.0%) of the accidents involved property damage. The GFDS and PSCR values showed a positive association with the RTCs of novice female drivers. Furthermore, age was not a significant influencing factor in the RTCs of novice female drivers. However, exposure factors were positively associated with the risk of RTC involvement. Conclusions: Female novice drivers who were single, divorced/widowed, employed, and had higher individual incomes were at higher risk of getting into RTCs. The female drivers who hired personal trainers, compared to those who did not, exhibited similar chances of getting involved in RTCs. An extra on-road in-traffic driving lesson is suggested to be included in the new-driver license training program for drivers with higher GFDS in SA.

Traffic Accident Risk Assessment Framework for Qassim, Saudi Arabia: Evaluating the Impact of Speed Cameras

Saudi Arabia is one of the countries with the highest number of road accidents and associated fatalities in the world. Speeding has been identified as an important cause of increased traffic accidents, which also aggravate their severity. Road safety improvement strategies are primarily based on the accurate identification of accident hotspots. Installing speed cameras at a network level is an expensive road safety measure, and its spatiotemporal effectiveness should be assessed. In this study, a traffic accident risk assessment framework has been developed and implemented on the 84 km long Buraydah Ring Road in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. The selected highway was divided into 42 (×2 km long) segments using the ArcGIS software. A risk scoring scheme was developed to incorporate both the frequency and severity of road accidents. Speed cameras installation at various segments showed a 70% decline in total accident counts, 53% in accidents with property damage, 84% decline in accidents causing injury, and complete absence of accidents with fatalities. The 48% segments were identified as hotspots with risk level ≥ medium, while the speed cameras installation completely eliminated the hotspots from the study area. The proposed framework can be implemented on major high-speed highways, accommodating high traffic volumes, for hotspot identification and evaluation of various road safety measures in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

Monitoring Road Accidents and Injuries Using Variance Chart under Resampling and Having Indeterminacy

The current manuscript proposes a SN2-NEWMA control chart for monitoring road accidents and injuries using repetitive sampling. The proposed chart helps in identifying the shifts in accidents and injuries more quickly than existing charts. The application of the proposed chart will help in reducing and identifying the reasons for road accidents and road injuries efficiently.

Factors associated with consecutive and non-consecutive crashes on freeways: A two-level logistic modeling approach

A consecutive crash consists of a primary crash and one or more secondary crashes that occur subsequently in a short period of time within a certain distance. It often affects a relatively large area of road space and the traffic disruption created can be difficult for traffic managers to control and resolve. This study identifies the factors delineating a primary crash that results in secondary crashes within a minute from a regular crash that does not result in any secondary crashes. Random-effects, random-parameter and two-level binary logistic regression models are applied to data collected on 8779 crashes on the freeway network of the Guizhou Province, China in 2018, of which 299 are consecutive crashes. According to the AIC values, the two-level logistic model outperforms the other two models. Rear-end primary crashes have a significant random effect varying across road segments on the occurrence of consecutive crashes. Various crash types (rear-end, roll-over and side-swipe), tunnel crash and foggy weather are positively associated with the possibility to cause subsequent consecutive crashes, whereas single-vehicle crash, truck involvement and the time periods with poorer natural lighting are less likely to incur consecutive crashes. Recommendations are provided to minimize the possibility of the occurrence of consecutive crashes on a freeway.

Injury risk assessment based on pre-crash variables: The role of closing velocity and impact eccentricity

Thorough evaluations on injury risk (IR) are fundamental for guiding interventions toward the enhancement of both the road infrastructure and the active/passive safety of vehicles. Well-established estimates are currently based on IR functions modeled on post-crash variables, such as velocity change sustained by the vehicle (ΔV); thence, these analyses do not directly suggest how pre-crash conditions can be modified to allow for IR reduction. Nevertheless, ΔV can be disaggregated into two contributions which enable its apriori calculation, based only on the information available at the impact instant: the Crash Momentum Index (CMI), representing impact eccentricity at collision, and the closing velocity at collision (V_r). By extensively employing the CMI indicator, this work assesses the overall influence of impact eccentricity and closing velocity on the risk for occupants to sustain a serious injury. As CMI synthesizes indications regarding ΔV, its use can be disjointed from the ΔV itself for the derivation of high-quality IR models. This feature distinguishes CMI from the other eccentricity indicators available at the state-of-the-art, allowing for the contribution of eccentricity on IR to be completely isolated. Because of this element of originality, special attention is given to the CMI variable throughout the present work. Based on data extracted from the NASS/CDS database, the influence of the CMI and V_r variables on IR is specifically highlighted and analyzed from several perspectives. The feature ranking algorithm ReliefF, whose use is unprecedented in the accident analysis field, is first employed to assess importance of such impact-related variables in determining the injury outcome: if compared to vehicle-related and occupant-related variables (as category and age, respectively), the higher influence of CMI and V_r is initially highlighted. Secondly, the relevance of CMI and V_r is confirmed by fitting different predictive models: the fitted models which include the CMI predictor perform better than models which neglect the CMI, in terms of classical evaluation metrics. As a whole, considering the high predictive power of the proposed CMI-based models, this work provides valuable tools for the apriori assessment of IR.

Monitoring the road traffic crashes using NEWMA chart and repetitive sampling

In this paper, a control chart for neutrosophic exponentially weighted moving average (NEWMA) is designed using repetitive sampling. The application of the proposed NEWMA chart is given to monitoring road traffic crashes (RTC). The simulation study of RTC and real example of RTC showed that the proposed NEWMA chart performs better in monitoring the RTC as compared to the existing control charts. From the comparative study, it is concluded that the proposed NEWMA chart can be applied effectively to control RTC as compared to the existing charts.
