Beyond 1D and oversimplified kinematics: A generic analytical framework for surrogate safety measures

This paper presents a generic analytical framework tailored for surrogate safety measures (SSMs) that is versatile across various highway geometries, capable of encompassing vehicle dynamics of differing dimensionality and fidelity, and suitable for dynamic, real-world environments. The framework incorporates a generic vehicle movement model, accommodating a spectrum of scenarios with varying degrees of complexity and dimensionality, facilitating the estimation of future vehicle trajectory evolution. It establishes a generic mathematical criterion to denote potential collisions, characterized by the spatial overlap between a vehicle and any other entity. A collision risk is present if the collision criterion is met at any non-negative estimated future time point, with the minimum threshold representing the remaining time to collision. The framework's proficiency spans from conventional one-dimensional (1D) SSMs to extended multi-dimensional, high-fidelity SSMs. Its validity is corroborated through simulation experiments that assess the precision of the framework when linearization is performed on the vehicle movement model. The outcomes showcase remarkable accuracy in estimating vehicle trajectory evolution and the time remaining before potential collisions occur, comparing to high-accuracy numerical integration solutions. The necessity of higher-dimensional and higher-fidelity SSMs is highlighted through a comparison of conventional 1D SSMs and extended three-dimensional (3D) SSMs. The results showed that using 1D SSMs over 3D SSMs could be off by 300% for Time-to-Collision (TTC) values larger than 1.5 s and about 20% for TTC values below 1.5 s. In other words, conventional 1D SSMs can yield highly inaccurate and unreliable results when assessing collision proximity and substantially misjudge the count of conflicts with predefined threshold (e.g., below 1.5s). Furthermore, the framework's practical application is demonstrated through a case study that actively evaluates all potential conflicts, underscoring its effectiveness in dynamic, real-world traffic situations.

From sky to road: Incorporating the satellite imagery into analysis of freight truck-related crash factors

Freight truck-related crashes in urban contexts have caused significant economic losses and casualties, making it increasingly essential to understand the spatial patterns of such crashes. Limitations regarding data availability have greatly undermined the generalizability and applicability of certain prior research findings. This study explores the potential of emerging geospatial data to delve deeply into the determinants of these incidents with a more generalizable research design. By synergizing high-resolution satellite imagery with refined GIS map data and geospatial tabular data, a rich tapestry of the road environment and freight truck operations emerges. To navigate the challenges of zero-inflated issues of the crash datasets, the Tweedie Gradient Boosting model is adopted. Results reveal a pronounced spatial heterogeneity between highway and urban non-highway road networks in crash determinants. Factors such as freight truck activity, intricate road network patterns, and vehicular densities rise to prominence, albeit with varying degrees of influence across highways and urban non-highway terrains. Results emphasize the need for context-specific interventions for policymakers, encompassing optimized urban planning, infrastructural overhauls, and refined traffic management protocols. This endeavor may not only elevate the academic discourse around freight truck-related crashes but also champion a data-driven approach towards safer road ecosystems for all.

Predicting pedestrian-involved crash severity using inception-v3 deep learning model

This research leverages a novel deep learning model, Inception-v3, to predict pedestrian crash severity using data collected over five years (2016-2021) from Louisiana. The final dataset incorporates forty different variables related to pedestrian attributes, environmental conditions, and vehicular specifics. Crash severity was classified into three categories: fatal, injury, and no injury. The Boruta algorithm was applied to determine the importance of variables and investigate contributing factors to pedestrian crash severity, revealing several associated aspects, including pedestrian gender, pedestrian and driver impairment, posted speed limits, alcohol involvement, pedestrian age, visibility obstruction, roadway lighting conditions, and both pedestrian and driver conditions, including distraction and inattentiveness. To address data imbalance, the study employed Random Under Sampling (RUS) and the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE). The DeepInsight technique transformed numeric data into images. Subsequently, five crash severity prediction models were developed with Inception-v3, considering various scenarios, including original, under-sampled, over-sampled, a combination of under and over-sampled data, and the top twenty-five important variables. Results indicated that the model applying both over and under sampling outperforms models based on other data balancing techniques in terms of several performance metrics, including accuracy, sensitivity, precision, specificity, false negative ratio (FNR), false positive ratio (FPR), and F1-score. This model achieved prediction accuracies of 93.5%, 77.5%, and 85.9% for fatal, injury, and no injury categories, respectively. Additionally, comparative analysis based on several performance metrics and McNemar's tests demonstrated that the predictive performance of the Inception-v3 deep learning model is statistically superior compared to traditional machine learning and statistical models. The insights from this research can be effectively harnessed by safety professionals, emergency service providers, traffic management centers, and vehicle manufacturers to enhance their safety measures and applications.

A hybrid approach of random forest and random parameters logit model of injury severity modeling of vulnerable road users involved crashes

Vulnerable road users (VRUs) involved crashes are a major road safety concern due to the high likelihood of fatal and severe injury. The use of data-driven methods and heterogeneity models separately have limitations in crash data analysis. This study develops a hybrid approach of Random Forest based SHAP algorithm (RF-SHAP) and random parameters logit modeling framework to explore significant factors and identify the underlying interaction effects on injury severity of VRUs-involved crashes in Shenyang (China) from 2015 to 2017. The results show that the hybrid approach can uncover more underlying causality, which not only quantifies the impact of individual factors on injury severity, but also finds the interaction effects between the factors with random parameters and fixed parameters. Seven factors are found to have significant effect on crash injury severity. Two factors, including primary roads and rural areas produce random parameters. The interaction effects reveal interesting combination features. For example, even though rural areas and primary roads increase the likelihood of fatal crash occurrence individually, the interaction effect of the two factors decreases the likelihood of being fatal. The findings form the foundation for developing safety countermeasures targeted at specific crash groups for reducing fatalities in future crashes.
