Preconcentration and Removal of Pb(II) Ions from Aqueous Solutions Using Graphene-Based Nanomaterials

Direct determination of lead trace concentration in the presence of relatively complex matrices is often a problem. Thus, its preconcentration and separation are necessary in the analytical procedures. Graphene-based nanomaterials have attracted significant interest as potential adsorbents for Pb(II) preconcentration and removal due to their high specific surface area, exceptional porosities, numerous adsorption sites and functionalization ease. Particularly, incorporation of magnetic particles with graphene adsorbents offers an effective approach to overcome the separation problems after a lead enrichment step. This paper summarizes the developments in the applications of graphene-based adsorbents in conventional solid-phase extraction column packing and its alternative approaches in the past 5 years.

Application of polysaccharide biopolymers as natural adsorbent in sample preparation

Preparing samples for analyses is perhaps the most important part to analyses. The varied functional groups present on the surface of biopolymers bestow them appropriate adsorption properties. Properties like biocompatibility, biodegradability, presence of different surface functional group, high porosity, considerable absorption capacity for water, the potential for modification, etc. turn biopolymers to promising candidates for varied applications. In addition, one of the most important parts of determination of an analyte in a matrix is sample preparation step and the efficiency of this step in solid phase extraction methods is largely dependent on the type of adsorbent used. Due to the unique properties of biopolymers they are considered an appropriate choice for using as sorbent in sample preparation methods that use from a solid adsorbent. Many review articles have been published on the application of diverse adsorbents in sample preparation methods, however despite the numerous advantages of biopolymers mentioned; review articles in this field are very few. Thus, in this paper we review the reports in different areas of sample preparation that use polysaccharides-based biopolymers as sorbents for extraction and determination of diverse organic and inorganic analytes.

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in bioanalysis

The importance of magnetic nanomaterials and magnetic hybrid materials, which are classified as new generation materials, in analytical applications is increasingly understood, and research on the adaptation of these materials to analytical methods has gained momentum. Development of sample preparation techniques and sensor systems using magnetic nanomaterials for the analysis of inorganic, organic and biomolecules in biological samples, which are among the samples that analytical chemists work on most, are among the priority issues. Therefore in this review, we focused on the use of magnetic nanomaterials for the bioanalytical applications including inorganic and organic species and biomolecules in different biological samples such as primarily blood, serum, plasma, tissue extracts, urine and milk. We summarized recent progresses, prevailing techniques, applied formats, and future trends in sample preparation-analysis methods and sensors based on magnetic nanomaterials (Mag-NMs). First, we provided a brief introduction of magnetic nanomaterials, especially their magnetic properties that can be utilized for bioanalytical applications. Second, we discussed the synthesis of these Mag-NMs. Third, we reviewed recent advances in bioanalytical applications of the Mag-NMs in different formats. Finally, recently literature studies on the relevance of Mag-NMs for bioanalysis applications were presented.

Pipette-tip SPE based on Graphene/ZnCr LDH for Pb(II) analysis in hair samples followed by GFAAS

In this work, a nanocomposite of ZnCr layered double hydroxide (ZnCr LDH) and graphene oxide (GO) was successfully assembled. An efficient pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) based on GO/ZnCr LDH followed by GFAAS analysis was used for to preconcentrate Pb(II) in hair samples. Hair samples were treated using acid digestion to make the solid samples suitable for performing the PT-SPE procedure and decrease the interactions between Pb(II) ions and the sample matrix. The sorbent was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDX, elemental mapping, and XRD. Effective extraction parameters were thoroughly investigated. Under the best conditions, the calibration plot was linear within the range of 0.5-15 ng mL^-1 (R² = 0.991). Preconcentration factor (PF) of 10 and absolute recovery (%) of 100% were obtained. LOD and LOQ were found to be 0.1 μg g^-1 and 0.5 μg g^-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precisions (n = 3) at the concentrations of 2.0 and 10 ng mL^-1 were less than 6.8% and 12.5%, respectively. Finally, the method efficiency was investigated for the analysis of Pb(II) in hair samples, and good relative recoveries (RR%) were obtained within the range of 92%-104%.

Development, validation, comparison, and implementation of a highly efficient and effective method using magnetic solid-phase extraction with hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced materials for LC-MS/MS analysis of pesticides in seawater

To achieve multi-pesticides residue analysis in seawater, hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced magnetic particles were designed and fabricated by swelling polymerization of divinyl benzene (DVB) and N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) on the surface of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ magnetic particles. The ratio of DVB to NVP was adjusted to achieve a proper balance in hydrophilicity and lipophilicity. The obtained magnetic particles were systematically characterized by TEM, SEM, FT-IR and vibrating sample magnetization. Based on the optimized magnetic nanoparticles, a sensitive magnetic solid-phase extraction method was developed for the simultaneous pre-concentration and determination of 96-pesticide residues from large-volume seawater samples prior to being detected by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Recoveries of pesticides in spiked seawater samples (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0 μg L^-1) ranged from 62% to 112% with RSDs less than 21%. The method limits of detection of 96 pesticides ranged from 0.13 to 0.42 ng L^-1, the method limits of quantification of 96 pesticides ranged from 1.0 to 10 ng L^-1. The method was successfully applied to pesticide residue analysis in water samples from Jiulong River Estuary of China, demonstrating the prospects of this technique as a potential method for the rapid determination of trace levels of multi-pesticide residues in seawater.

Functional Magnetic Graphene Composites for Biosensing

Magnetic graphene composites (MGCs), which are composed of magnetic nanoparticles with graphene or its derivatives, played an important role in sensors development. Due to the enhanced electronic properties and the synergistic effect of magnetic nanomaterials and graphene, MGCs could be used to realize more efficient sensors such as chemical, biological, and electronic sensors, compared to their single component alone. In this review, we first reviewed the various routes for MGCs preparation. Then, sensors based on MGCs were discussed in different groups, including optical sensors, electrochemical sensors, and others. At the end of the paper, the challenges and opportunities for MGCs in sensors implementation are also discussed.

Self-assembly of poly(ionic liquid) functionalized mesoporous magnetic microspheres for the solid-phase extraction of preservatives from milk samples

In this work, a novel, rapid, and simple analytical method was proposed for the detection of parabens in milk sample by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. At the same time, milk sample was pretreated by magnetic solid phase extraction, which detected up to five parabens. A series of important parameters of magnetic solid phase extraction were investigated and optimized, such as pH value of loading buffer, amount of material, adsorption time, ionic strength, eluting solvents, and eluting time. Under the optimized conditions, the corresponding values were more than 0.9991, limits of detection and the limit of quantification were 0.1 and 0.5 ng/mL, respectively. In addition, the recoveries were achieved in range of 95-105%, the liner range were within 0.1-600 ng/mL, and the relative standard deviations were even lower than 5%.

Adsorption of arsenic using chitosan magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite

Chitosan-magnetic-graphene oxide (CMGO) nanocomposite was prepared for arsenic adsorption. The nanocomposite was characterized through BET, FTIR, FESEM, EDX, and VSM analyses. These characterizations confirmed the formation of CMGO nanocomposites with high specific surface area (152.38 m²/g) and excellent saturation magnetization (49.30 emu/g). Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the nanocomposite in the adsorption of arsenic from aqueous solution. The effects of operational parameters, adsorption kinetic, equilibrium isotherm and thermodynamics were evaluated. The removal efficiency of arsenic increased with increasing adsorbent dosage and contact time. However, the effect of pH followed a different pattern, with the removal efficiency increasing from acidic to neutral pH, and then decreasing at alkaline conditions. The highest adsorption capacity (45 mg/g) and removal efficiency (61%) were obtained at pH 7.3. The adsorption kinetic followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The analysis of adsorption isotherm shows that the adsorption data fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model, indicating a homogeneous process. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the adsorption of As(III) is exothermic and spontaneous. The superparamagnetic properties of the nanocomposite enabled the separation and recovery of the nanoparticles using an external magnetic field. Thus, the developed nanocomposite has a potential for arsenic remediation.
