Preparation and Kinetic Studies of Cross-Linked Chitosan Beads Using Dual Crosslinkers of Tripolyphosphate and Epichlorohydrin for Adsorption of Methyl Orange. ScientificWorldJournal 2021; 2021:6648457. [PMID: 33679260 PMCID: PMC7904354 DOI: 10.1155/2021/6648457] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/20/2020] [Revised: 01/26/2021] [Accepted: 02/04/2021] [Indexed: 12/03/2022] Open
Abstract
Preparation of cross-linked chitosan beads using dual crosslinkers of tripolyphosphate (TPP) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) for the adsorption and kinetic studies of methyl orange (MO) had been carried out. FTIR spectra showed that TPP could act as the protecting agent of the NH2 group of chitosan and ECH reacted with the primary hydroxyl group of chitosan. Various concentrations of TPP, ECH, and immersing time in the TPP solution for bead formation were studied. The effect of pH and kinetics of adsorption were investigated to define the mechanism of adsorption and rate-limiting step. As a result, pH 3, 10% (w/v) TPP, 5% (v/v) ECH, and 12 h immersing time in TPP were selected as the optimum conditions for preparing the beads as indicated by the highest adsorption amount of MO. The cross-linked chitosan beads' adsorption capacity for MO under optimum condition was found to be 79.55 mg/g with the adsorption rate constant (k) of 1.29 × 10−3/min. Furthermore, it was found that a low concentration of ECH could maintain the stability of chitosan in acidic conditions, whereas the concentration of TPP and immersing time controlled pore size and morphology of chitosan beads. The mechanism of adsorption of MO was controlled by the pore and rigidity of cross-linked chitosan beads. Bulk diffusion acted as a rate-limiting step, and a high concentration of MO inhibited diffusion and adsorption itself.

Abstract
In different regions across the globe, elevated arsenic contents in the groundwater constitute a major health problem. In this work, a biopolymer chitosan has been blended with volcanic rocks (red scoria and pumice) for arsenic (V) removal. The effect of three blending ratios of chitosan and volcanic rocks (1:2, 1:5 and 1:10) on arsenic removal has been studied. The optimal blending ratio was 1:5 (chitosan: volcanic rocks) with maximum adsorption capacity of 0.72 mg/g and 0.71 mg/g for chitosan: red scoria (Ch–Rs) and chitosan: pumice (Ch–Pu), respectively. The experimental adsorption data fitted well a Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.99) and followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The high stability of the materials and their high arsenic (V) removal efficiency (~93%) in a wide pH range (4 to 10) are useful for real field applications. Moreover, the blends could be regenerated using 0.05 M NaOH and used for several cycles without losing their original arsenic removal efficiency. The results of the study demonstrate that chitosan-volcanic rock blends should be further explored as a potential sustainable solution for removal of arsenic (V) from water.

Abstract
The polyfunctional nature of chitosan enables its application as a polymer ligand not only for the recovery, separation, and concentration of metal ions, but for the fabrication of a wide spectrum of functional materials. Although unmodified chitosan itself is the unique cationic polysaccharide with very good complexing properties toward numerous metal ions, its sorption capacity and selectivity can be sufficiently increased and turned via chemical modification to meet requirements of the specific applications. In this review, which covers results of the last decade, we demonstrate how different strategies of chitosan chemical modification effect metal ions binding by O-, N-, S-, and P-containing chitosan derivatives, and which mechanisms are involved in binding of metal cation and anions by chitosan derivatives.

Abstract
The sorption of selenite (SeO(3)(2-)) and selenate (SeO(4)(2-)) onto Fe(3)O(4) nanomaterials produced by non microwave-assisted or microwave-assisted synthetic techniques was investigated through use of the batch technique. The phase of both synthetic nanomaterials was determined to be magnetite by X-ray diffraction. The average grain sizes of non microwave-assisted and microwave-assisted synthetic Fe(3)O(4) were determined to be 27 and 25 nm, respectively through use of the Scherrer's equation. Sorption of selenite was pH independent in the pH range of 2-6, while sorption of selenate decreased at pH 5 and 6. The addition of Cl(-) had no significant effect on selenite or selenate binding, while the addition of NO(3)(-) only affected selenate binding to the microwave assisted Fe(3)O(4). A decrease of selenate binding to both synthetic particles was observed after the addition of SO(4)(2-) while selenite binding was not affected. The addition of PO(4)(3-) beginning at concentrations of 0.1 ppm had the most prominent effect on the binding of both selenite and selenate. The capacities of binding, determined through the use of Langmuir isotherm, were found to be 1923 and 1428 mg Se/kg of non microwave-assisted Fe(3)O(4) and 2380 and 2369 mg Se/kg of microwave-assisted Fe(3)O(4) for selenite and selenate, respectively.

Abstract
Arsenic removal has become a relevant concern due to the final confirmation of its behaviour as chronic human carcinogen, corresponding to an ever-increasing contamination of water, soil and crops in many parts of the world. Developing easily accessible removal strategies is therefore a primary environmental matter. Chitosan and chitosan derivatives show good adsorption performances against arsenic removal and are considered low cost products, easily obtainable. This review provides a summary of recent advances of the application of these compounds in the area of sorption sciences for arsenate and arsenite removal from water, focusing on equilibrium and kinetic mechanisms.

Abstract
A bifunctional sorbent, (NH(2)+SH)silica, containing both amine and mercapto functionalities was prepared by modification of silica gel with 3-(triethoxysilyl)propylamine and (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane. In addition to the bifunctional sorbent, silica gel was modified individually with the functional mercapto- and amino-silanes, and the mono-functional sorbents, namely (SH)silica and (NH(2))silica, were also mechanically mixed ((NH(2))silica+(SH)silica) for the sake of comparison of sorption performances. It has been demonstrated that (SH)silica shows quantitative sorption only to As(III) at two pH values, 1.0 and 9.0, while (NH(2))silica displays selectivity only towards As(V) at pH 3.0. On the other hand, the bifunctional (NH(2)+SH)silica possesses the efficient features of the two mono-functionalized sorbents; for example, it retains As(III) at a wider pH range, from 1.0 to at least 9.0 with the exception at pH 2.0, and it also shows quantitative sorption to As(V) at pH 3.0. This property gives the bifunctional (NH(2)+SH)silica a better flexibility in terms of sorption performance as a function of solution pH. The mechanically mixed (NH(2))silica+(SH)silica exhibits a similar but less efficient sorption behavior compared to the bifunctional sorbent. Desorption of both As(III) and As(V) species can be realized using 0.5M NaOH. The validity of the proposed method was checked through the analysis of a standard reference material and a good correlation was obtained between the certified (26.67 μg L(-1)) and determined (27.53±0.37 μg L(-1)) values. Spike recovery tests realized with ultrapure water (93.0±2.3%) and drinking water (86.9±1.2%) also confirmed the applicability of the method.

Abstract
Crosslinked chitosan resin chemically modified with L-lysine has been used to investigate the adsorption of Pt(IV), Pd(II) and Au(III) from aqueous solutions. Batch adsorption studies were carried out with various parameters, such as initial metal ion concentration, contact time, pH and temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity was found at pH 1.0 for Pt(IV), at pH 2.0 for Au(III) and Pd(II). Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to analyze the experimental data. The best interpretation for the experimental data was given by the Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 129.26 mg/g for Pt(IV), 109.47 mg/g for Pd(II) and 70.34 mg/g for Au(III). The kinetic data was tested using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Kinetic data correlated well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the chemical sorption was the rate-limiting step. Thermodynamic parameters like Gibbs free energy (DeltaG degrees), enthalpy (DeltaH degrees) and entropy (DeltaS degrees) were evaluated by applying the Van't Hoff equation. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The desorption studies were carried out using various reagents. The maximum percent desorption of precious metal ions were obtained when the reagent 0.7 M thiourea-2 M HCl was used.

Abstract
A novel chelating resin functionalized with serine diacetic acid moiety was synthesized by using chitosan as base material, and applied to the collection/concentration of trace elements in environmental water samples, followed by the determination using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). The synthesized resin, crosslinked chitosan serine diacetic acid (CCTS-SDA), showed good adsorption behavior toward trace amounts of Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, V, Ga, Sc, In, and Th in a wide pH range. Additionally, rare earth elements also can be retained on the resin at neutral pH region. The adsorbed elements can be easily eluted with 1 mol L(-1) of nitric acid, and their recoveries were found to be 90-100%. The CCTS-SDA was packed in a mini-column, which was then installed in a computer-controlled auto-pretreatment system (Auto-Pret System) for on-line trace elements collection and determination with ICP-AES. Experimental parameters which related to the improvement of sensitivity and reproducibility were optimized. The limits of detection (LOD) for 13 elements were found to be in sub-ppb level. The proposed method with CCTS-SDA resin was successfully applied to the determination of trace elements in river water samples. The method was validated by determining a certified reference material of river water, SLRS-4.

Abstract
A chitosan resin derivatized with 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid moiety (CCTS-DHBA resin) was newly synthesized for the collection/concentration of trace uranium by using cross-linked chitosan (CCTS) as base material, and the adsorption behavior of uranium as well as 60 elements on the resin was examined by passing the sample solutions through a mini-column packed with the resin. After the elution of the collected elements on the resin with 1M HNO(3), the eluates were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The CCTS-DHBA resin can adsorb several metal cations and several oxoanionic elements at appropriate pH. Among these metal ions, uranium shows an excellent adsorption behavior on this resin. Uranium as UO(2)(2+) species can be adsorbed on the resin by chelating mechanism with adsorption capacity of 330 mg g(-1) resin. Through the column treatment, the complete removal of large amounts of alkali and alkaline earth matrices without any loss of adsorption efficiency over prolonged usage were achieved with this resin. The CCTS-DHBA resin was applied to the adsorption/collection of uranium in tap water, river water and seawater samples with satisfactory results. The validation of the proposed method was carried out by analyzing uranium in the standard reference materials of SLRS-4, CASS-4, and NASS-5 after passing through the CCTS-DHBA resin, and the results showed good agreement with the certified values.
