Determination of cationic surfactants in pharmaceuticals based on competitive aggregation in ternary amphiphile mixtures

Analytical and preparative chromatographic procedures for obtaining pure cresyl violet and cresyl red from commercial cresyl violet

Cresyl violet and cresyl red, components of commercial cresyl violet acetate, were separated and purified using preparative column liquid chromatography. The stationary phase was silica gel and gradient elution was carried out using chloroform:methanol. The purified dyes were obtained in high yield; 51% of the original lot was recovered as cresyl violet and 40% as cresyl red. Separated materials were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy; UV-visible and Fourier-transform infrared spectra also were obtained for samples of pure cresyl violet and cresyl red. The colored constituents of the commercial dye lot were identified using thin layer chromatography and reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography. Both methodologies were suitable for routine testing; reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography is an appropriate tool for quality control and high resolution identification of these compounds.

Surfactant to dye binding degree method for the determination of fluvoxamine maleate and citalopram hydrobromide in pharmaceuticals

The surfactant to dye binding degree (SBDB) methodology was used to determine fluvoxamine maleate and citalopram hydrobromide. Neutral red and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were used as the dye and surfactant, respectively, to form dye-surfactant aggregates. When a cationic drug is added to dye-surfactant mixture, it interacts with the surfactant and decreases the dye-surfactant binding degree. This decrease is proportional to the drug concentration. This was measured by monitoring the absorbance changes of the dye at 532 nm. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration graphs were linear over the range of 1.2–15 μg mL−1 and 1.1–15 μg mL−1 for fluvoxamine maleate and citalopram hydrobromide, respectively. The detection limits (signal to noise ratio = 3) were found to be 0.37 and 0.35 μg mL−1, for fluvoxamine maleate and citalopram hydrobromide, respectively.

Non-extraction flow injection determination of cationic surfactants using eriochrome black-T

A new, rapid, sensitive, non-extraction batch, and flow injection spectrophotometric method for the determination of cationic surfactants (CSs) such as cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), tetra-n-butyl ammonium chloride (TBAC) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is proposed. The method is based on the interaction of cationic surfactants with eriochrome black-T to form an ion-association complex. This complex has strong absorbance at 708 nm. The effects of chemical parameters and FIA variables on the determination of cationic surfactants were studied in detail, especially for CTAB. Under optimum conditions, the two linear calibration ranges of the method are 3.0 x 10(-6) to 5.0 x 10(-3)mol L(-1) CTAB, CPB and DTAB for the batch spectrophotometric method and 2.0 x 10(-6) to 2.0 x 10(-4)mol L(-1) CTAB, CPB and TBC for the flow injection spectrophotometric method. The sample throughput was 35+/-5 samples h(-1) at room temperature. The relative standard deviations for 10 replicates of analysis of (2.0, 0.6 and 0.2)x10(-4)mol L(-1) CTAB were 1.2, 1.3, and 0.8%, respectively. In addition, the influence of potential interfering substances on the determination of cationic surfactants was studied. The proposed method is simple and rapid, using no toxic organic solvents. It was applied to the determination of trace CS in industrial wastewater with satisfactory results.
