Ytterbium-selective polymeric membrane electrode based on substituted urea and thiourea as a suitable carrier

A novel sensor for the selective monitoring of trace ytterbium ions using an agarose-based optical membrane

A novel highly selective sensitive optical sensor was prepared via the chemical immobilization of β-2-hydroxybenzyl-5-bromo-2-hydroxyazastyrene (HBBHAS) on an epoxy-activated agarose membrane pieces. The absorbance variation of the immobilized azastyrene film on agarose upon the addition of 1.5 × 10⁻⁵ M aqueous solutions of La³⁺, Y³⁺, Al³⁺, Sc³⁺, Sm³⁺, Eu³⁺, Lu³⁺, Fe³⁺, Ce³⁺, Cr³⁺, S₂O₃²⁻, Tb³⁺, Mn²⁺ and KIO₃ revealed substantially higher changes for the Yb³⁺ ion compared to the other considered ions. Thus, using HBBHAS as an appropriate ionophore, a selective optical sensor for Yb³⁺ was prepared via its chemical immobilization on a transparent agarose membrane. The effects of pH, reagent concentration, and time duration of the reaction of immobilizing the reagent were examined. A distinct change in the maximum absorbance of the reagent was established on contact of the sensing membrane with Yb³⁺ ions at pH = 4.25. For the membrane sensor, a linear relationship was observed between the variation in membrane absorbance (ΔA) at 424 nm and Yb³⁺ concentrations in the range of 4.75 × 10⁻⁵ to 6.20 × 10⁻¹⁰ M with a detection limit of 1.9 × 10⁻¹⁰ M for Yb³⁺. The effects of some potentially interfering ions on the assessment of Yb³⁺ were analyzed, and no substantial interference was found. The sensor showed a short response time and decent durability with no reagent leaching. The recovery of Yb³⁺ ions from the sensor material was performed using 0.3 M HNO₃ and its response was reversible and reproducible with RSD ≥ 1.95%. This study reports a non-toxic, economical, stable, accurate, easy-to-use, and novel optical sensor material to assess Yb³⁺ in synthetic and environmental water samples.

Lead(II) ion selective electrodes with PVC membranes based on two bis-thioureas as ionophores: 1,3-bis(N'-benzoylthioureido)benzene and 1,3-bis(N'-furoylthioureido)benzene

Two PVC membrane ion selective electrodes for Pb(II) ion based on two bis-thioureas: 1,3-bis(N'-benzoylthioureido)benzene and 1,3-bis(N'-furoylthioureido)benzene as ionophores, are reported. A first membrane formulated using 1,3-bis(N'-benzoylthioureido)benzene as carrier exhibited a Nernstian response to Pb(II) over a wide concentration range (4.0x10(-6) to 1.0x10(-2)M) with a slope of 31.5+/-1.6 mV/dec. It showed a fast response time (t(90%)=14 s) and could be used for 10 weeks without any divergence in potentials. The membrane formulated using 1,3-bis(N'-furoylthioureido)benzene as carrier exhibited a Nernstian response in the concentration range (5.0x10(-6) to 1.0x10(-2) M), with a slope of 30.0+/-1.3 mV/dec. Its response time was t(90%)=14 s, and it could be used for 14 weeks without any divergence in potentials. The two proposed potentiometric sensors revealed acceptable selectivities for Pb(II) over a wide variety of other metal ions and could be used in a pH range of 2.2-6.0. Both electrodes were assayed in direct potentiometric determination of lead in soils (10-30 mg/kg range) with very good performance (0.99935 correlation coefficient in the comparison against ICP-MS method).

Lanthanide Recognition: an Asymetric Erbium Microsensor Based on a Hydrazone Derivative

N'-(2-hydroxy-1,2-diphenylethylidene)benzohydrazide (HDB) was found tohave a very selective and sensitive behavior towards erbium(III) ions, in comparison tothirteen lanthanide ions, inner transition and representative metal ions and was hence usedas a neutral ion carrier in construction of an Er(III) microelectrode. Theoretical calculationsand conductance studies of HDB to erbium and some other metal ions were carried out andconfirmed selectivity toward Er(III) ions.The best performance was obtained with a membrane contain 3% potassium tetrakis(p-chlorophenyl)borate (KTpClPB) as an anionic additive, 72% dibutyl phthalate (DBP) assolvent mediator, 5% HDB, and 20% poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The proposed Er(III)microelectrode exhibits a near Nernstian response of 17.5±0.5 mV per decade of erbiumactivity, and a very wide linear range 1.0×10-3-3.0×10-10 M. It can work well in the pHrange of 3.0-9.0. The lower detection limit (LDL) of the microelectrode was calculated tobe 2.0×10-10 M.
