Chelating polymers with valuable sorption potential for development of precious metal recycling technologies

A special attention is currently focused on the recovery of Au, Ag, Pt, Pd and Rh from both primary and secondary sources. From the wide range of sorbents that have been used in this respect, the required selectivity is proved only by the chelating polymers containing donor N, O and S atoms in their functional groups. This work presents the recent published researches on this topic, pointing out the capabilities of chelating sorbents based on organic synthetic polymers for a sustainable development. The chelating sorbents are differentiated and reviewed according to their synthesis strategy and compatibility with synthetic and real matrices. First, an overview on the novel functionalized polymers and impregnated resins with good selectivity for the recovery of most valuable precious metals from synthetic leach solutions is given. Subsequently, the performances of these materials in the selective and preconcentrative recovery of Au, Ag, Pt, Pd and Rh from simulated and real leachates are discussed. The viability of an integrated approach for the determination of precious metals from simulated solutions by solid phase spectrometry is highlighted. The transposition of chelating polymers’ potential in challenging technologies for precious metal recovery-reuse-recycling needs further research on directions that are proposed.

Optimization of ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid-phase microextraction based on nanoparticles followed by spectrophotometry for the simultaneous determination of dyes using experimental design

A simple, low cost and ultrasensitive method for the simultaneous preconcentration and determination of trace amount of auramine-O and malachite green in aqueous media following accumulation on novel and lower toxicity nanomaterials by ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid phase micro-extraction (UA-DSPME) procedure combined with spectrophotometric has been described. The Mn doped ZnS nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon were characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses and subsequently were used as green and efficient material for dyes accumulation. Contribution of experimental variables such as ultrasonic time, ultrasonic temperature, adsorbent mass, vortex time, ionic strength, pH and elution volume were optimized through experimental design, and while the preconcentrated analytes were efficiently eluted by acetone. Preliminary Plackett-Burman design was applied for selection of most significant factors and giving useful information about their main and interaction part of significant variables like ultrasonic time, adsorbent mass, elution volume and pH were obtained by central composite design combined with response surface analysis and optimum experimental conditions was set at pH of 8.0, 1.2mg of adsorbent, 150μL eluent and 3.7min sonication. Under optimized conditions, the average recoveries (five replicates) for two dyes (spiked at 500.0ngmL(-1)) changes in the range of 92.80-97.70% with acceptable RSD% less than 4.0% over a linear range of 3.0-5000.0ngmL(-1) for the AO and MG in water samples with regression coefficients (R(2)) of 0.9975 and 0.9977, respectively. Acceptable limits of detection of 0.91 and 0.61ngmL(-1) for AO and MG, respectively and high accuracy and repeatability are unique advantages of present method to improve the figures of merit for their accurate determination at trace level in complicated materials.

New biomimetic approach to determine the bioavailability of triclosan in soils and its validation with the wheat plant uptake bioassay

A new biomimetic approach for triclosan (TCS) was developed based on the leaching of the analyte from different biosolid-amended agricultural soils and the subsequent extraction of the leachates, using a rotating disk sorptive extraction (RDSE) procedure. The leaching equilibrium for TCS was reached at 3h when the ISO method (ISO/TS 21268-1:2007) was followed. The concentrations determined by this biomimetic method were compared with the bioavailability of TCS, determined by its accumulation in the roots of wheat plants grown in the same soil-biosolid systems. It was observed that the amount of organic matter in the soil matrix was a determining factor for mobilization of TCS. An increasing biosolid rate applied to soils resulted in a reduced mobility of TCS because the high amount of organic matter provided by the biosolid increased the hydrophobic interaction between TCS and the matrix. Similarly, increasing biosolid concentrations in the soil significantly decreased the bioavailability of TCS to the wheat plant. Thus, the bioavailability factor in wheat roots decreased from 0.22 to 0.08 for a soil having a pH of 8.2, when the biosolid rate was increased from 30 to 200 Mg ha(-1), respectively. A significant correlation (R=0.98) was obtained between TCS concentration in wheat plants and the proposed biomimetic methodology, indicating that the latter can predict the bioavailability in a time period as short as 180 min. The results of this study confirm our previous findings that amending soils with biosolids is beneficial for immobilizing low polarity contaminants and helps prevent their percolation through the soil profile and into groundwater.

Novel sorption-based methodologies for static microextraction analysis: A review on SBSE and related techniques

Stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) became a well-established analytical technique in the last years, for which hundreds of applications in almost all types of scientific fields can be found in the literature. In spite of the great enrichment capacity and outstanding performance to operate at the ultra-trace level, this remarkable static sorption-based method is already not quite effective for some complex systems, in particular to monitor the large group of polar organic compounds. This review aims to cover the state-of-the-art in SBSE, as well as supplying a discussion of the analytical potential of the novel adsorptive microextraction techniques, as complementary enrichment approaches, by explaining the main principles and providing technical know-how for the beginners.

Extraction and stirring integrated techniques: examples and recent advances

Extraction techniques, which focus on selectivity and sensitivity enhancement by isolation and preconcentration of target analytes, are essential in many analytical methods. Because many extraction techniques occur under diffusion-controlled conditions, stirring of the sample solution is required to accelerate the extraction by favoring diffusion of the analytes from the bulk solution to the extractant phase. This stirring may be performed by use of an external device or by integrating extraction and stirring in the same device. This review focuses on the latter techniques, which are promising methods for sample treatment. First, stir-bar-sorptive extraction, the most widely used method, is considered, paying special attention to the development of new coatings. Finally, a general overview of novel integrated techniques in both solid-phase and liquid-phase microextraction is presented; their main characteristics and marked trends are reported.
