Molecularly imprinted polymers as optical sensing receptors: Correlation between analytical signals and binding isotherms

Fast Extraction and Detection of 4-Methylimidazole in Soy Sauce Using Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymer by HPLC

On the basis of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) solid-phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography, we established a new method for the determination of the 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI) in soy sauce. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were used to characterize the synthesized MMIPs. To evaluate the polymers, batch rebinding experiments were carried out. The binding strength and capacity were determined from the derived Freundlich isotherm (FI) equation. The selective recognition capability of MMIPs was investigated with a reference compound and a structurally similar compound. As a selective pre-concentration sorbents for 4-methylimidazole in soy sauce, the MMIPs showed a satisfied recoveries rate of spiked samples, ranged from 97% to 105%. As a result, the prepared MMIPs could be applied to selectively pre-concentrate and determine 4-methylimidazole in soy sauce samples.

Host-guest interactions between sildenafil and cyclodextrins: Spectrofluorometric study and molecular dynamic modeling

Sildenafil (SF) was included in cyclodextrins (CD) to enhance its solubility. Spectrofluorometry was used to confirm the complexation constant (stability constant). The orientations of SF inside the β-CDs and γ-CDs were fully illustrated. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed on two inclusion complexes (β-CD/SF and γ-CD/SF) in the aqueous system. The polar methylpiperazine group was found to locate inside the β-CD cavity, both in the wide and narrow side and was positioned 2°A from the center. In contrast, the methylpiperazine group did not fit well within the γ-CD cavity. Moreover, these results also confirmed hydrogen bonding that the highest number of bonding formed between the polar methylpiperazine sulfonyl structure and the hydroxyl group of β-CD. The simulated binding free energy of the methylpiperazine-β-CD inclusion complex (-6.01kcal/mol), featured a large contribution from electrostatic and van der Waals forces, which was the most stable complex. The association constant of β-CD/SF (12.3) was higher than γ-CD/SF (3.3) and confirmed with in silico measurements of binding free energy. In summary, SF forms a stable complex with β-CD.

Characterization of the Binding Properties of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

The defining characteristic of the binding sites of any particular molecularly imprinted material is heterogeneity: that is, they are not all identical. Nonetheless, it is useful to study their fundamental binding properties, and to obtain average properties. In particular, it has been instructive to compare the binding properties of imprinted and non-imprinted materials. This chapter begins by considering the origins of this site heterogeneity. Next, the properties of interest of imprinted binding sites are described in brief: affinity, selectivity, and kinetics. The binding/adsorption isotherm, the graph of concentration of analyte bound to a MIP versus concentration of free analyte at equilibrium, over a range of total concentrations, is described in some detail. Following this, the techniques for studying the imprinted sites are described (batch-binding assays, radioligand binding assays, zonal chromatography, frontal chromatography, calorimetry, and others). Thereafter, the parameters that influence affinity, selectivity and kinetics are discussed (solvent, modifiers of organic solvents, pH of aqueous solvents, temperature). Finally, mathematical attempts to fit the adsorption isotherms for imprinted materials, so as to obtain information about the range of binding affinities characterizing the imprinted sites, are summarized.

Molecular imprinting science and technology: a survey of the literature for the years 2004-2011

Herein, we present a survey of the literature covering the development of molecular imprinting science and technology over the years 2004-2011. In total, 3779 references to the original papers, reviews, edited volumes and monographs from this period are included, along with recently identified uncited materials from prior to 2004, which were omitted in the first instalment of this series covering the years 1930-2003. In the presentation of the assembled references, a section presenting reviews and monographs covering the area is followed by sections describing fundamental aspects of molecular imprinting including the development of novel polymer formats. Thereafter, literature describing efforts to apply these polymeric materials to a range of application areas is presented. Current trends and areas of rapid development are discussed.
