Water-soluble Schiff base ligands and metal complexes: an overview considering green solvent

The water-soluble metal complexes with Schiff base (SB) ligands are of great interest to green chemistry researchers due to their stability, cost-effectiveness, eco-friendly, electron-donating ability, and various applications. They have high potential to express their biological activity including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and DNA binding and cleavage. In the recent era, transition metal complexes have played a significant role in different processes such as hydrogenation, carbonylation, oxidation, reduction, epoxidation, hydrolysis, decomposition, and polymerization reactions in industry. However, their limited aqueous solubility may be the major limitation to their potential catalytic, industrial, and clinical applications. In industrial catalytic processes, it has been proven that water can be used as a solvent to minimize the environmental effect of different reactions as well as simple and complete separation. Water is a green solvent, flexible, non-toxic, safe, readily available, environmentally harmless, and inexpensive. Attaching different substituents on Schiff bases enhances the water solubility and catalytic activity. Studies on water-soluble SB complexes will explore these aspects and their prospects for the future evolution of their diverse applications.

Enhanced Host-Guest Association and Fluorescence in Copolymers from Copper Salphen Complexes by Supramolecular Internalization of Anions

We describe the synthesis, crystallographic characterization of a new Cu-Salphen compound and its use as a host Lewis-acid against guest anions in two versions: a) free molecule, b) copolymerized with methyl methacrylate:n-butyl acrylate (1 : 4-wt.) as protective co-monomers. Higher contents in Cu-Salphen yielded larger and more homogeneous polymer sizes. Polymer size together with glass transitions, heat capacity, thermal degradation, guest-saturation degrees and host-guest species distribution profiles from spectrophotometric titrations explained growths of up to 630-fold in K₁₁ and 180000-fold in K₁₂ for the host's binding site attributable to a solvophobic protection from the macromolecular structure. Spectrofluorimetry revealed blue-shifted×13-16 larger luminescence for Cu-Salphen in the polymers (λ_em =488-498 nm) than that of the non-polymerized counterpart (λ_em =510-543 nm) and "turn-on" blue-shifted enhanced fluorescence upon guest association. We propose a cooperative incorporation of the guests occurring from the outer medium toward internally protected binding site pockets in the random coil polymer conformations.

A fluorescent Rhodol-derived probe for rapid and selective detection of hydrogen sulfide and its application

H₂S has been reported to play essential roles in a variety of physiological and pathological procedures. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe, Rho-HS, for detecting H₂S was developed by introducing the ortho-halogen to activate the least reactive recognition group 2,4-dinitrophenyl moiety. In combination of the structures from both Rhodamine B and fluorescein, Rho-HS could generate both the colorimetric and fluorescent responses. This feature was not frequently achieved and could lead to the quantitative and convenient for the end-user. In comparison with recent probes for H₂S, the major advantages of Rho-HS included suiting wide pH range (6.0-10.0), relatively rapid response (within 15 min) and the high selectivity among the competing species including the biothiols. With low cytoxicity, Rho-HS was further applied in the biological imaging in living MCF-7 cells and Caenorhabditis elegans. We hope that the designing strategy in this work might provide useful information for more preferable implements in this field.

Orto-hydroxy bioactive schiff base compounds: Design, comprehensive characterization, photophysical properties and elucidation of antimicrobial and mutagenic potentials

Preparation and comprehensive characterization of three Schiff base ligands; with trimethoxy substitution (1E,1'E)-N,N'-(naphthalene-1,5-diyl)bis(1-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)methanimine, 1, with ortho-hydroxy substitution 6,6'-((1E,1'E)-(naphthalene-1,5-diylbis(azaneylylidene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(2-methoxyphenol), 2 and 3,4-bis(((E)-2-hydroxy-3-methoxy benzylidene)amino)benzoicacid, 3 and their Ni(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Fe(II), Mn(II) complexes have been reported. Their spectral properties were studied in solution and solid-state by a combination of different analytical techniques; FT-IR spectroscopy, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and thermal analysis. Diamagnetic and paramagnetic natures of the complexes were also determined by magnetic susceptibility measurements in solid-state. Promising photophysical properties were observed as; A_max. were recorded at 226 nm for 2; at 795 nm for 2-Ni, at 782 nm for 2-Cu, at 784 nm for 2-Co, at 702 nm for 2-Zn, at 784 nm for 2-Fe, at 702 nm for 2-Mn and at 289 nm for 3, at 786 nm for 3-Ni, at 797 nm for 3-Cu, at 746 nm for 3-Co, at 794 nm for 3-Zn, at 699 nm for 3-Fe, at 781 nm for 3-Mn ; and I_max were also recorded at; 380, 490, 725 nm for 2 and 2-Metal; 375 nm, 510 nm, 725 nm for 3 and 3-Metal when excitated at 220 nm. Antibacterial activities against different microorganisms; Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 70603, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43,300 (MRSA), Salmonella enteritidis ATTC 13076, Sarcina lutea ATCC 9341, Bacillus cereus ATTC 11778, and antifungal activities against Candida albicans NRRL Y-417 of the compounds 1, 2, 3, 2-Cu, 2-Fe, 3-Zn, 3-Fe were determined. Mutagenic properties of the compounds were also studied and according to the results 2-Cu and 3 have been found non-mutagenic in Ames test but also they have strong antimicrobial potential against pathogen microorganisms. For 2-Cu MIC values were ranging between 0.39 and 0.024 mg/ml and the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (0.024 mg/ml) was determined against E. coli. The 3 numbered compound revealed strong antimicrobial activity at doses of ranging between 0.39 and 0.097 mg/ml and E. coli was the most sensitive bacterium against this chemical.

Novel luminescent Schiff's base derivative with an azo moiety for ultraselective and sensitive chemosensor of Fe3+ ions

Chemosensors with ultrasensing capabilities for detection of metal ions have received particular attention when using luminescent organic compounds. Even though hundreds of chemosensor agents have been reported for Fe³⁺ ion sensing, the designs of those molecules have been complicated and time consuming, in addition to having limited application for aquatic samples due to their poor hydrophilicity. Here, we synthesized a novel azo-imine derivative (L2) that showed ultrasensitive and selective sensing for Fe³⁺ ions. L2 exhibited ultraselective detection of Fe³⁺ ions with a turn-off of its emission intensity at 341 nm in H₂ O:MeOH (4:1 v/v) aqueous medium. This quenching phenomenon was in good agreement with its colour change from orange-yellowish to colourless. Its capability was shown due to its very low limit of detection and limit of quantification values of 0.31 and 1.04 μM, respectively. The interference study showed that L2 is ultraselective for the detection of Fe³⁺ ions without a significant reduction in its sensing capability even in competitive metal mixtures. Furthermore, direct Fe³⁺ quantification of tap and drinking water showed that L2 gave good recovery percentages. These findings demonstrated that the Schiff's base with an azo fluorophore derivative is a potential chemosensor agent for Fe³⁺ ions sensing applications in aqueous media.

A single molecular sensor for selective and differential colorimetric/ratiometric detection of Cu2+ and Pd2+ in 100% aqueous solution

A novel salicylaldehyde bis-Schiff-base probe decorated with imidazolium ionic liquid moieties at both ends (SAS-IMIs) was designed and facilely synthesized as a colorimetric/ratiometric sensor to visually detect Cu²⁺ and Pd²⁺ in pure aqueous media. Due to the positively charged characters of its head and tail, the SAS-IMIs exhibited high water solubility with a potential advantage in minimizing the self-aggregation. More importantly, simply by varying the solution pH, colorimetric/ratiometric sensing detection of individual metal ion (Cu²⁺ or Pd²⁺) was realized without any mutual interference. Subsequently, sensitive, selective, and differential detections for Cu²⁺ (LOD: 0.080 μM) and Pd²⁺ (LOD: 0.076 μM) in 100% aqueous solutions were achieved, which proved to be applicable for real water samples. Results from density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveiled the Cu²⁺/Pd²⁺-binding properties of SAS-IMIs, which were in accordance with the experimental observations. Furthermore, a SAS-IMIs-based solid phase sensor was fabricated, which manifested satisfactory detection abilities for Cu²⁺ and Pd²⁺.

Solvent-Dependent Bending Ability of Salen-Derived Organic Crystals

The formation of plastic or brittle organic crystals of salen derivatives that depend on the solvents employed for crystallization is demonstrated. Large yellow crystals (ranging from mm to cm size) of ten different salen derivatives were obtained and investigated. Among them, (bis(2-hydroxyacetophenone)ethylenediimine) 2, which was recrystallized from dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran or chloroform, exhibited plastic deformation behaviour when mechanical force was applied to the (001) face. In contrast, when 2 was recrystallized from benzene, brittle crystals were obtained. Face indexing confirmed that different crystal faces were obtained by depending on the solvent employed for recrystallization, which leads to either flexible (plastic) or brittle crystals. Photoluminescence with a band maximum at 510 nm and thermochromism related to tautomerism between OH and NH forms were also investigated, and indicate that 2 is a flexible organic single-crystal material with multifunctional properties.

A Newly Synthesized Heterobimetallic NiII-GdIII Salamo-BDC-Based Coordination Polymer: Structural Characterization, DFT Calculation, Fluorescent and Antibacterial Properties

A unprecedented hetero-bimetallic 3d-4f BDC-salamo-based coordination polymer, [(L)Ni(BDC)Gd(NO3)(DMF)] was prepared and validated via elemental analyses, IR and UV–Visible absorption spectra, DFT calculation, and X-ray crystallography. The six-coordinated Ni1 ion lies at the N2O2 donor site of the L2− moiety, and one DMF O atom and carboxylate O atom occupy, collectively, the axial positions, and form a twisted octahedron. The nine-coordinated Gd1 ion consists of three oxygen atoms (O12, O13, and O14) of two carboxylate groups, two oxygen atoms (O8 and O9) derived from one bidentate nitrate group, and an O2O2 coordination site (O1, O2, O6, and O5) of the L2− unit, forming a twisted three-capped triangular prism coordination geometry. Compared to the ligand (H2L), the fluorescence intensity decreases due to the coordination of metal ions. Meanwhile, the antibacterial activities are researched.

Utilising an anilido-imino ligand to stabilise zinc-phosphanide complexes: reactivity and fluorescent properties

A series of zinc complexes bearing the anilido-imino ligand [(o-C6H4{N(C6H3iPr2)}{C(CH3) = NC6H3iPr2})] [(LDipp)ZnX] has been generated. This includes two amide derivatives, [(LDipp)Zn(N{SiMe3}2)] and [(LDipp)Zn(NH{Dipp})] and two phosphanide derivatives, [(LDipp)ZnPCy2] and [(LDipp)ZnPPh2]. The chemistry of the phosphanide complexes towards chalcogens was examined, with sulfur, selenium and tellurium oxidising the phosphorus centre of the dicylohexylphosphanide complex [(LDipp)ZnPCy2] to form [(LDipp)Zn(E)2PCy2] (E = S, Se, Te). Addition of tellurium to the diphenylphosphanide complex [(LDipp)ZnPPh2] results in formation of Ph2PPPh2 and [(LDipp)ZnTeZn(LDipp)]. The absorption and emission properties of these complexes was examined and the quantum yields are highly dependent upon the non-ancillary ligand X.

Water-Soluble Sulfonate Schiff-Base Ligands as Fluorescent Detectors for Metal Ions in Drinking Water and Biological Systems

The ability to detect and selectively identify trace amounts of metal ions is of major importance for drinking water identification and biological studies. Herein, we report a series of water-soluble Schiff-base ligands capable of being fluorescent and colorimetric sensors for metal ions. Upon coordination of the metal ion to the ligand, quenching of fluorescence is observed, typically in a 1:1 ratio. The selectivity of metal ions Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cr₃₊, and Co₂₊ is exhibited via fluorescence quenching accompanied by colorimetric changes, whereas that of Ag⁺ and Co²⁺ is observed through colorimetric changes alone. Additionally, pH sensing studies were performed for the potential use of these ligands in biological applications.

A near infrared light emitting electrochemical cell with a 2.3 V turn-on voltage

We report on an organic electroluminescent device with simplified geometry and emission in the red to near infrared (NIR) spectral region which, has the lowest turn-on voltage value, 2.3 V, among light emitting electrochemical cells (LEECs). We have synthesized and characterized three novel ruthenium π-extended phenanthroimidazoles which differ on their N^N ligands. The use of dimethyl electron donating groups along with the π-extended phenanthroimidazole moiety promotes ambipolar transport thereby avoiding the use of additional charge transport layers. Furthermore, a facile cathode deposition method based on transfer of a molten alloy (Ga:In) on top of the active layer is deployed, thus avoiding high vacuum thermal deposition which adds versatile assets to our approach. We combine ambipolar charge transport organic complex design and a simple ambient cathode deposition to achieve a potentially cost effective red to NIR emitting device with outstanding performance, opening new avenues towards the development of simplified light emitting sources through device optimization.

Photoluminescence properties of tetrahedral zinc(ii) complexes supported by calix[4]arene-based salicylaldiminato ligands

The synthesis and photophysical properties of four new hybrid salicylaldiminato-calix[4]arene ligands and their corresponding zinc(ii) complexes are described. The Schiff bases were obtained from condensation reactions between cone-25,27-di(aminoethoxy)-26,28-dihydroxy-calix[4]arene and salicylaldehyde (H2L1) or o-vanillin (H2L2) and 1,3-alt-25,27-di(aminoethoxy)-26,28-di(n-propyloxy)-calix[4]arene and 3,5-di-tert-butyl-salicylaldehyde (H2L3) or o-vanillin (H2L4). Complexation reactions were investigated by ESI-MS, IR, NMR, UV-vis absorption and steady-state and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. All ligands support 1 : 1 complexes (ZnL1-ZnL4), with equilibrium constants derived from absorption spectrophotometry in the range log K11 = 5.5-8.2 (MeCN or MeOH/CH2Cl2, I = 0.01 M). The zinc complexes show blue fluorescence, both in solution as well as in the solid state, with λem, Φf, and τ ranging from 472-504 nm, 0.11-0.60, and 2-9 ns, respectively. The nature of the substituents on the salicylaldiminato fragments was found to be the main parameter that influences the photophysical properties of the zinc complexes. Insights into the electronic nature of the UV-vis transitions were obtained with time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations.

Ni(II) and Zn(II) Complexes Containing Alkynyl Functionalized Salicylaldimine Ligand and Heterocyclic Coligand: Synthesis, Characterization and Luminescence Properties

Some nickel(II) and zinc(II) complexes of the type [Ni(L)(phen/bipy)]X (1a-6a) and [Zn(L) (phen/bipy)]X (1b-6b) (where L = 2-{(E)-[(4-trimethylsilylethynylphenyl)imino]methyl}-4-(4-nitro phenylethynyl)phenol; phen = 1, 10-phenanthroline, bipy = 2, 2´-bipyridine; X = ClO₄^-, BF₄^-, PF₆^-) have been prepared and characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, FTIR, ¹H NMR and mass spectral studies. The molecular structure of L was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The electrochemical behaviour of the Ni(II) complexes indicate that the phen complexes appears at more positive potential as compared to those for bipy complexes, as a consequence of its strong π-acidic character. TGA was carried out to study the thermal behavior of the complexes. Room temperature luminescence is observed for all complexes corresponds to π → π* ILCT transition. The size of the counter anion and heterocyclic coligands phen and bipy shows marked effect on emission properties of the complexes.

A Disassembly Strategy for Imaging Endogenous Pyrophosphate in Mitochondria by Using an Fe(III) -salen Complex

Inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) is produced from nucleoside triphosphates in important biosynthetic reactions and is considered a diagnostic marker for various diseases, such as cancer, crystal deposition disease, and arthritis. Traditional methods for biological PPi detection rely on off-line analytics after sample destruction. Molecular probes for imaging this biologically important analyte with temporal and spatial control in living cells are currently in demand. Herein, we report an Fe(III) -salen complex as the first small reaction-based probe for endogenous mitochondrial PPi following a disassembly approach. Significantly, we successfully applied this complex for the detection of increased cellular PPi levels, and its performance was not affected by the presence of mitochondrial ATP in living cells.

Theoretical and experimental studies on three new coordination complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) with 2,4-dichloro-6-{(E)-[(5-chloro-2 sulfanylphenyl)imino]methyl}phenol Schiff base ligand

Three mononuclear coordination complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) have been synthesized from 2,4-dichloro-6-{(E)-[(5-chloro-2-sulfanylphenyl)imino]methyl}phenol ligand (H 2 L) obtained by simple condensation reaction of 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 2-amino-4-chlorobenzenethiol and characterized by elemental analysis, spectral (FT-IR, electronic, and (1)H-NMR), molar conductance, thermal, SEM, PXRD, and fluorescence studies. The PXRD analysis and SEM-EDX micrographs show the crystalline nature of complexes. The domain size and the lattice strain of synthesized compounds have been determined according to Williamson-Hall plot. TG of the synthesized complexes illustrates the general decomposition pattern of the complexes. The ligand exhibits an interesting fluorescence property which is suppressed after complex formation. The Co(II) complex adopted a distorted octahedral configuration while Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes showed square planar geometry around metal center. The geometry optimization, HOMO-LUMO, molecular electrostatic potential map (MEP), and spin density of synthesized compounds have been performed by density functional theory (DFT) method using B3LYP/6-31G and B3LYP/LANL2DZ as basis set. Synthesis, Spectroscopic Properties and Antioxidant Activity of Bis-Hydrazones and Schiff's bases Derived from Terephthalic Dihydrazide

A series of novel Schiff base containing bis-1,2,4-triazole and bis-hydrazone derived from terephthalic dihydrazide was synthesized. All the newly synthesized compounds were characterized by (1)H, (13)C NMR, mass spectra, FTIR and elemental analysis. UV-vis spectra and fluorescent spectra of the compounds were recorded. The effect of substituent such as electron withdrawing and electron donating groups on the fluorescent spectra was studied. Also, the comparative discussion on fluorescent spectra of Schiff's base and hydrazones has been described. The antioxidant activity of the compounds revealed that compound 5c and 5f are the most potent compounds in this series.

Substitutional group dependent colori/fluorimetric sensing of Mn(2+), Fe(3+) and Zn(2+) ions by simple Schiff base chemosensor

Schiff base is one of the easiest synthesizable chemosensor and exhibit strong coordination with metal ions; the property that has been vastly exploited for metal ions sensing. Simple Schiff base chemosensors (1a-d and 2a-d) were synthesized and demonstrated substitutional group dependent colorimetric sensing of metal ions. Chemosensor without (1a, 2a) and OCH3 substitution (1b, 2b) did not show any significant colour change for metal ions. However, a highly selective colorimetric change (colourless to pink) for Mn(2+) ions (10(-6)M) was observed with diethylamine substituted 1c, 2c. Hydroxyl substitution (1d, 2d) leads to selective colorimetric sensing (colourless to orange) of Fe(3+) ions (10(-6)M). PVA thin films of 2c/2d were fabricated and demonstrated selective colorimetric sensing of Mn(2+) and Fe(3+) ions. The practical applicability of the synthesized chemosensors were also demonstrated by performing selective colorimetric sensing of Mn(2+) and Fe(3+) ions in real samples such as tap, ground, pond and river water. Effect of substitution on the fluorescence selectivity of Zn(2+) has also been investigated.
