Abstract
Commercial polyurethane foam was treated with salicylate salt to synthesize PUFSalicylate (PUFS) as a novel, promising, stable and inexpensive adsorbent for chlorpyrifos (CPF) extraction. The properties of PUFS were investigated using UV-Vis spectroscopy, apparent density, FTIR spectroscopy, pHZPC, BET surface area, elemental analysis, TGA and DTG tests. Batch experiments were performed for the sorption of CPF under different salicylate concentrations, pH, shaking time, ionic strength, agitation speed, sorbent mass, batch factor and initial concentration of CPF. The results confirmed that 97.4% of CPF in a 25 mL solution, 10 μg/L concentration, could be retained by only 0.3 mg of PUFS (1:105mass ratio of PUFS: solution). In addition, the maximum capacity of PUFS for the sorption of CPF was 1249.8 μg/mg (3.9 × 10-5 mol/g) within 180 min. The negative values of ΔH° and ΔG° indicated that the sorption of CPF onto PUFS is an exothermic spontaneous process (favorable). The calculated data from the experimental procedures fitted perfectly with Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.9952) and the kinetic Equation of pseudo-second order. In addition, the R2 value in the Elovich Equation recorded higher when compared to the Morris-Weber and Bangham Equations; hence, the pore diffusion is not the rate-determining step. Thus, the use of PUFSalicylate for the removal of chlorpyrifos contaminations from agriculture runoff is applicable.

Abstract
The gold abundance in basic rocks, which normally varies between 0.5 and 5 ppb, has served as a very important indicator in many geoscience studies, including those focused on the planetary differentiation, redistribution of elements during the crustal process, and ore genesis. However, because gold is a monoisotopic element that exhibits a nugget effect, it is very difficult to quantify its ultra-low levels in rocks, which significantly limits our understanding of the origin of gold and its circulation between the Earth crust, mantle, and core. In this work, we summarize various sample digestion and combined preconcentration methods for the determination of gold amounts in rocks. They include fire assay, fire assay combined with Te coprecipitation and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) or laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, fusion combined with Te coprecipitation and anion exchange resins, dry chlorination, wet acid digestion combined with precipitation, ion exchange resins, solvent extraction, polyurethane foam, extraction chromatography, novel solid adsorbents, and direct determination by INAA. In addition, the faced challenges and future perspectives in this field are discussed.

Abstract
A simple and selective method has been developed for preconcentration of gold in ore samples. The method is based on use of N, N-diethyl-N'-benzoylthiourea (DEBT) as selective chelating agent and Amberlite XAD-16 as solid sorbent. Sorption behavior of gold with DEBT impregnated resin under optimized conditions has been studied in batch process. The gold ion capacity of the impregnated resin is calculated as 33.48 mg g−1 resin (0.17 mmol g−1 resin). The selective preconcentration of metal was examined using gold chelates prepared in column process under optimized conditions: pH, flow rate, volume of sample solution, nature of eluent, flow rate, and volume of eluent. Under optimum conditions, gold ions at the concentration of 0.015 μg mL−1 with a preconcentration factor of 6.7 have been determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The accuracy of the proposed method was validated by the analysis of a Cu-ore (semi-certified) supplied by CMC (Cyprus Mining Company, North Cyprus) and a certified reference material, Gold Ore (MA-1b Canmet-MMSL). Satisfactory results were obtained with a RSD of 7.6%. The highly selective proposed method does not require any interference elimination process.

Abstract
Power struggles surrounding the increasing economic development of gold mining give rise to severe environmental and social problems. Two new strains of Lysinibacillus sphaericus were isolated from an area of active alluvial gold mining exploitation at El Bagre, Antioquia. The absorption capacity of these strains and some of the L. sphaericus Microbiological Research Center (CIMIC) collection (CBAM5, OT4b.31, III(3)7) were evaluated by spectrophotometry according to a calibration gold curve of HAuCl4− with concentrations between 0 µg/mL and 100 µg/mL. Bioassays with living biomass were carried out with an initial gold concentration of 60 µg/mL. Their sorption capacity was evident, reaching percentages of gold removal between 25% and 85% in the first 2 h and 75% to 95% after 48 h. Biosynthesis of possible gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in assays with living biomass was also observed. Metal sorption was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The sorption and fabrication capacity exhibited by the evaluated strains of L. sphaericus converts this microorganism into a potential alternative for biomining processes, especially those related to gold extraction.

Decoupled in-plane Dipole Resonance Modulated Colorimetric Assay-Based Optical Ruler for Ultra-Trace Gold (Au) Detection. Sci Rep 2018; 8:868. Abstract
Decoupling of different plasmon resonance modes (in-plane, and out-of-plane dipole and quadrupole resonances) by tuning nanoparticle’s size and shape offers a new field of plasmonics as colorimetric assay-based optical-ruler for ultra-trace sensing. Driven by its low cost, easy to perform and efficient way to measure trace level (up to 30 ppt in presence of common mining elements in natural gold ore) abundance, this study develops a highly selective and ultrasensitive turn-on colorimetric sensor to detect gold-ion from environmental samples. Different level of gold-ion tracer makes size variable spherical- and disc-shaped silver nanoparticles when added to a ‘growth solution’ which results decoupling of in-plane dipole resonance from in-plane quadrupole and out-of-plane dipole resonances with a wide range of in-plane dipole plasmon tunability to generate different colors. This color-coded sensing of gold-ion shows high selectivity and ultrasensitivity over other metal ions in the ppt level with an impurity aberration limit of 1 ppm. A plausible explanation explains the possible role of catalytic gold-ion to initiate unfavorable silver ion (Ag+) reduction by ascorbic acid to generate silver nanoparticles. Proposed technology has been applied in real mining sample (Bugunda Gold Deposit, Tajikistan) to detect gold concentration from ores to find potential application in mining technology.

Abstract
A new chelating sorbent was synthesized by covalently linking carbon nano-fiber with ion exchange polyurethane foam (CNF-PUFIX). CNF-PUFIX was characterized using different tools e.g. elemental analysis, IR spectrum and SEM. The functional groups of PUF have disappeared. The phenolic, carboxylic, quaternary ammonium salt and tertiary amine groups are detected in the CNF-PUFIX. The sorption properties of platinum (IV) onto CNF-PUFIX were investigated, the maximum sorption of platinum ions (~100%) was at the pH ranges 4-5, shaking for 18 min and sample flow rate 1.3 mL min(-1). The experimental data was fitted by kinetic models, the pseudo-second order is predominant (R(2)=0.998), the values of h and k2 are 4.4 mmol g(-1)min(-1) and 0.15 g mmol(-1)min(-1), respectively. The sorption capacity of CNF-PUFIX and the recovery percentage of Pt (IV) were 0.19 mmol g(-1) and 99-103%, respectively (RSD=1.72%, n=5). The CNF-PUFIX could be used many times without decreasing their capacities significantly. The equilibrium process is well described by the Langmuir isotherm model (R(2)=0.857), which is attributed to the homogeneous surface structure of the CNF-PUFIX. The values of ΔG and ΔH were -3.5 and -26.1 kJ mol(-1), respectively, which indicate that the sorption of platinum onto CNF-PUFIX is spontaneous and exothermic. The lower detection limit of platinum using spectrophotometric method is 2.4 µg L(-1) (RSD~3.8%, n=6). The accuracy of the procedure was verified by the analysis of standard reference materials of pharmaceutical and granite samples.
