Unravelling the potential of magnetic nanoparticles: a comprehensive review of design and applications in analytical chemistry

The study of nanoparticles has emerged as a prominent research field, offering a wide range of applications across various disciplines. With their unique physical and chemical properties within the size range of 1-100 nm, nanoparticles have garnered significant attention. Among them, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) exemplify promising super-magnetic characteristics, especially in the 10-20 nm size range, making them ideal for swift responses to applied magnetic fields. In this comprehensive review, we focus on MNPs suitable for analytical purposes. We investigate and classify them based on their analytical applications, synthesis routes, and overall utility, providing a detailed literature summary. By exploring a diverse range of MNPs, this review offers valuable insights into their potential application in various analytical scenarios.

A Review on Pretreatment and Analysis Methods of Polyether Antibiotics in Complex Samples

Polyether antibiotics (PAs) are the anti-coccidiosis drugs used for treating and preventing coccidiosis. Studies show the residues of these antibiotics in food cause adversities and threaten human health. PAs thus need robust, rugged, and accurate methods for their analysis. This review encompasses pretreatment and detection methods of PAs in diverse matrices since 2010. Both conventional and developed methods are part of the pretreatments, such as dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, solvent front position extraction, QuEChERS (Quick Easy Cheap Effective Rugged and Safe), supercritical fluid extraction, and others. The analysis methods involve liquid chromatography coupled with detectors, sensors, etc. The pros and cons of various techniques for PAs have been discussed and future tendencies are proposed.

Lateral Flow Immunoassay Reader Technologies for Quantitative Point-of-Care Testing

Due to the recent pandemic caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the lateral flow immunoassay used for its rapid antigen test is more popular than ever before. However, the history of the lateral flow immunoassay is about 60 years old, and its original purpose of use, such as a COVID-19 rapid antigen test or a pregnancy test, was the qualitative detection of a target analyte. Recently, the demand for quantitative analysis of lateral flow immunoassays is increasing in various fields. Lateral flow immunoassays for quantitative detection using various materials and sensor technologies are being introduced, and readers for analyzing them are being developed. Quantitative analysis readers are highly anticipated for their future development in line with technological advancements such as optical, magnetic field, photothermal, and electrochemical sensors and trends such as weight reduction, miniaturization, and cost reduction of systems. In addition, the sensing, processing, and communication functions of portable personal devices such as smartphones can be used as tools for the quantitative analysis of lateral flow immunoassays. As a result, lateral flow immunoassays can efficiently achieve the goal of rapid diagnosis by point-of-care testing. Readers used for the quantification of lateral flow immunoassays were classified according to the adopted sensor technology, and the research trends in each were reviewed in this paper. The development of a quantitative analysis system was often carried out in the assay aspect, so not only the readers but also the assay development cases were reviewed if necessary. In addition, systems for quantitative analysis of COVID-19, which have recently been gaining importance, were introduced as a separate section.

Rapid and sensitive detection of HIV-1 p24 antigen by immunomagnetic separation coupled with catalytic fluorescent immunoassay

In this study, a system of magnetic beads (MBs) coupled with catalytic fluorescent immunoassay for rapid and sensitive determination of HIV-1 capsid antigen p24 was developed. p24 was captured by antibody immobilized MBs, and the detection antibody was linked to horseradish peroxidase (HRP) through biotin-streptavidin recognition, catalyzing the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and hydrogen peroxide to produce a fluorescent product. This is the first reported utilization of the fluorescence of OPD oxidation product catalyzed by HRP for immunoassay. Optimization of conditions afforded a low detection limit of 0.5 pg/mL (3σ) for p24 with a linear range of 1.4-90.0 pg/mL. The assay exhibited good reproducibility with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.4 %, 4.7 %, and 5.0 % for detecting 1.4 pg/mL, 22.5 pg/mL, and 45.0 pg/mL p24, respectively. The assay can be completed in less than 90 min. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully applied to detect p24 in spiked serum. This method overcomes the interference of MBs to the fluorescence signal and demonstrated higher sensitivity for detection of p24 than conventional ELISA kits. The system could be applied for detecting other antigens with high sensitivity, rapidity, specificity, and simple operation.
