Abstract
A disposable microfluidic channel sensor printed on a plastic platform was developed to analyze heavy metal ions (HMIs) as a model target species. Precise separation and detection of multiple targets were established by symmetrically applying a small AC potential on the carbon channel walls to induce an electrodynamic force. The separation device was constructed by covering it with a plastic lid to achieve capillary action in the channel. The sample flow rate was regulated by the hydrophilicity of the lid plastic and electrodynamic convection by the AC field, which was characterized by the contact angle measurement and the additional electrodynamic force. The flow variables and their relevance to the capillary phenomena were demonstrated, and the analytical parameters were optimized. The working electrode was modified with poly(diamino terthiophene) anchored with nanosized graphene oxide (pDATT/GO) to enhance the detection performance. The experimental variables for separating and detecting the target species were optimized according to the AC frequency and amplitude, sample flow rate, electrolytes, pH, temperature, and applied potential for detection. The linear dynamic ranges were between 0.1 and 200.0 ppb, with detection limits of 0.04 ± 0.023, 0.29 ± 0.05, 0.07 ± 0.011, and 0.14 ± 0.06 ppb for Cu2+ Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+, respectively. Finally, the reliability of the proposed method was evaluated through analysis of HMIs in real water samples. The results were matched to those obtained through parallel analysis using ICP-MS at a 95% confidence level.

Abstract
While it is recognized that instrumentation techniques can provide precise and sensitive solutions to heavy metal ion monitoring, it remains challenging to transform laboratory testing into a convenient, on-site, and quantitative sensing platform for point-of-care testing (POCT) in a resource-constrained setting. To address these limitations, an affordable and user-friendly colorimetric POCT sensing system is proposed here for selectively monitoring four metal ions (Fe3+, Co2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+) based on the sulfur quantum dots (S dots). Quadruple distinct visual signals (green, brown, precipitation, and bright yellow) are presented on the fabricated paper-based analytical devices (PADs) when mixing S dots and metal ions. The high-quality photographs of the PADs are captured by a scanner, while a smartphone App converts visual signals to HSV values. The quantitative analysis relies on the digital colorimetric reading, and the limits of detection are 0.59, 0.47, 0.82, and 0.53 μM for Fe3+, Co2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+, respectively. This metal ions-responsive platform is engineered as a smart strategy for multiple logic operations (YES, NOT, AND, INHIBIT, and NOR) by integrating multi-responsive blocks into the S dots with encoded patterns, which improves the computing capability. Accordingly, this strategy demonstrates its potential for on-site environmental testing and sophisticated molecular computation.

Abstract
A BOPHY-based organotellurium-containing probe was synthesized and characterized via single crystal XRD for the selective and sensitive detection of Hg2+ over other metal ions. The probe detects Hg2+ in less than 1 s with a 2.5-fold enhancement in fluorescent intensity. Due to the chalcogenophilicity of mercury, Hg2+ was facilely trapped in the NTe2 chelating cavity of the probe. The probe can detect Hg2+ in the nanomolar range (62 nM) and it showed reversibility with S2- ions. The sensitivity of the probe for the detection of Hg2+ was confirmed in living HeLa cells.

Abstract
In this work, electromagnetic heating was firstly explored as sample introduction approach in portable microplasma-atomic emission spectrometer to achieve the direct, rapid analysis of soil sample. The device primarily consists of an electromagnetic heating unit, a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) excitation source and an optical signal acquisition unit. A W-boat was used as an electromagnetic heating medium and sample carrier, and copper coil spiraled around the tube was used as magnetic induction coil. With applying a voltage on copper coil, W-boat was electromagnetically heated to vaporize analyte-containing species for sample introduction into the microplasma. The portable battery-powered device is controlled by a miniature touch screen computer with the main advantages of small size (40.5 cm (l) × 30 cm (w) × 15 cm (h).), light weight (less than 7 kg), low-power consumption (the average power consumption is 118 W). By this method, Hg, Cd and Pb in soil were simultaneously analyzed within 4 min. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection for Hg, Cd and Pb in soils were 8.0 μg/kg, 17.8 μg/kg and 3.5 mg/kg, respectively, meeting the requirements for environmental quality standards for soils of China. Different types of CRM soils were analyzed, demonstrating good accuracy, stability and utility of this method. This technique could be a promising and powerful tool for on-site, rapid analysis of heavy metals in soil even other solid samples. Electromagnetic heating mode provides a good alternative for solid sampling to develop portable, miniaturized atomic spectrometers for solid sample analysis.

Abstract
In this study, a novel automatic analytical methodology using a titanium dioxide (TiO2)-assisted preconcentration/on-site vapor-generation (VG) chip hyphenated with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for online determination of mercuric ions (Hg2+) was developed. Interestingly, the TiO2 nanoparticle (nano-TiO2) coating on the channel surface acted not only as a sorbent for preconcentration but also as a catalyst for photocatalyst-assisted VG. Under optimum operation conditions, the developed method was validated by analyzing the certified reference material (CRM) Seronorm™ Trace Elements Urine L-2 (freeze-dried human urine). Based on the obtained results, the dramatic reduction of "hands-on" manipulation and the elimination of hazardous materials (e.g., sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and stannous chloride (SnCl2)) from the process enabled a simple and ultraclean procedure with an extremely low detection limit of 0.75 ng L-1 for Hg2+ in urine samples. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the direct exploitation of a nano-TiO2-coated microfluidic device for online sample preconcentration and on-site VG prior to ICP-MS measurement.

Abstract
The study of binding affinity is essential in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing because it allows researchers to quantify the affinity between the analyte and immobilised ligands of an SPR sensor. In this study, we demonstrate the derivation of the binding affinity constant, K, for Pb2+ and Hg2+ ions according to their SPR response using a gold/silver/gold/chitosan-graphene oxide (Au/Ag/Au/CS-GO) sensor for the concentration range of 0.1-5 ppm. The higher affinity of Pb2+ to binding with the CS-GO sensor explains the outstanding sensitivity of 2.05 °ppm-1 against 1.66 °ppm-1 of Hg2+. The maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) upon detection of Pb2+ is 1.53, and exceeds the suggested logical criterion of an SNR. The Au/Ag/Au/CS-GO SPR sensor also exhibits excellent repeatability in Pb2+ due to the strong bond between its functional groups and this cation. The adsorption data of Pb2+ and Hg2+ on the CS-GO sensor fits well with the Langmuir isotherm model where the affinity constant, K, of Pb2+ and Hg2+ ions is computed. The affinity of Pb2+ ions to the Au/Ag/Au/CS-GO sensor is significantly higher than that of Hg2+ based on the value of K, 7 × 10⁵ M-1 and 4 × 10⁵ M-1, respectively. The higher shift in SPR angles due to Pb2+ and Hg2+ compared to Cr3+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions also reveals the greater affinity of the CS-GO SPR sensor to them, thus supporting the rationale for obtaining K for these two heavy metals. This study provides a better understanding on the sensing performance of such sensors in detecting heavy metal ions.
