Abstract
With multiscale hierarchical structure, wood is suitable for a range of high-value applications, especially as a chromatographic matrix. Here, we have aimed to provide a weak anion-exchange polymeric monolithic column based on natural wood with high permeability and stability for effectively separating the targeted protein. The wood-polymeric monolithic column was synthesized by in situ polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in wood, and coupled with diethylaminoethyl hydrochloride. The wood-polymeric monolithic column can be integrated with fast-protein liquid chromatography for large-scale protein purification. According to the results, the wood-polymeric monolithic column showed high hydrophilicity, permeability and stability. Separation experiments verified that the wood-polymeric monolithic column could purify the targeted protein (spike protein of SARS-COV-2 and ovalbumin) from the mixed proteins by ion exchange, and the static adsorption capacity was 33.04 mg mL-1 and the dynamic adsorption capacity was 24.51 mg mL-1. In addition, the wood-polymerized monolithic column had good stability, and a negligible decrease in the dynamic adsorption capacity after 20 cycles. This wood-polymerized monolithic column can provide a novel, efficient, and green matrix for monolithic chromatographic columns.

Abstract
Catecholamines (CAs), including adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine, are neurotransmitters and hormones that play a critical role in regulating the cardiovascular system, metabolism, and stress response in the human body. As promising methods for real-time monitoring of catecholamine neurotransmitters, LC-MS detectors have gained widespread acceptance and shown significant progress over the past few years. Other detection methods such as fluorescence detection, colorimetric assays, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy have also been developed to varying degrees. In addition, efficient pretreatment technology for CAs is flourishing due to the increasing development of many highly selective and recoverable materials. There are a few articles that provide an overview of electrochemical detection and efficient enrichment, but a comprehensive summary focusing on analytical detection technology is lacking. Thus, this review provides a comprehensive summary of recent analytical detection technology research on CAs published between 2017 and 2022. The advantages and limitations of relevant methods including efficient pretreatment technologies for biological matrices and analytical methods used in combination with pretreatment technology have been discussed. Overall, this review article provides a better understanding of the importance of accurate CAs measurement and offers perspectives on the development of novel methods for disease diagnosis and research in this field.

Abstract
The review presents an evaluation of the development of on-line, at-line and in-line sample treatment coupled with capillary and microchip electrophoresis over the last 10 years. In the first part, it describes different types of flow-gating interfaces (FGI) such as cross-FGI, coaxial-FGI, sheet-flow-FGI, and air-assisted-FGI and their fabrication using molding into polydimethylsiloxane and commercially available fittings. The second part deals with the coupling of capillary and microchip electrophoresis with microdialysis, solid-phase, liquid-phase, and membrane based extraction techniques. It mainly focuses on modern techniques such as extraction across supported liquid membrane, electroextraction, single drop microextraction, head space microextraction, and microdialysis with high spatial and temporal resolution. Finally, the design of sequential electrophoretic analysers and fabrication of SPE microcartridges with monolithic and molecularly imprinted polymeric sorbents are discussed. Applications include the monitoring of metabolites, neurotransmitters, peptides and proteins in body fluids and tissues to study processes in living organisms, as well as the monitoring of nutrients, minerals and waste compounds in food, natural and wastewater.

Abstract
Catecholamines-dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline are important biomarkers of neurotransmitter metabolism, indicating neuroendocrine tumors and neurodegenerative diseases. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising analytical technique with unprecedented multiplexing capabilities. However, not all important analytes exhibit strong SERS signals on stable and robust nanostructured substrates. In this work, we propose a novel indicator system based on the formation of mixed ligand complexes with bispidine-based bis-azole ligands which can serve as pliers to trap Cu(II) ions and stabilize its complexes with catecholamines. Four synthesized ligands with different functional groups: carboxyl, amino, benzyl, and methoxybenzyl, were applied for forming stable complexes to shift maximum absorbance of catecholamines from the ultraviolet region to 570-600 nm. A new absorbance band in the visible range resonates with the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) band of metal nanoparticles and most used laser wavelengths. This match allowed use of Molecular Immobilization and Resonant Raman Amplification by Complex-Loaded Enhancers (MIRRACLE) methodology to measure intense Raman signals on a nanostructured silver-based SERS-active substrate. The synthesized plier-like ligands fixed and stabilized catecholamine complexes with Cu(II) on the SERS sensor surface, which facilitated the determination of dopamine in a 3.2 × 10-12-1 × 10-8 M concentration range.

Abstract
In affinity chromatography, non-specific interactions between the ligands and the affinity column may affect the results, leading to misinterpretations during the investigation of protein-ligand interactions (detection of false positives in ligand screening, lack of specificity in purification). Such non-specific interactions may arise both from the underlying support or from the target protein itself. If the second ones are protein-dependent (and cannot be studied in a general framework), the first ones occur in the same way regardless of the immobilized target. We propose a methodology to identify the origin of such non-specific interactions with the underlying material of the affinity column. This methodology relies on the systematic investigation of the retention behavior of a set of 41 low-molecular weight compounds covering a wide chemical space (net charge, log D, functionality). We first demonstrate that the main source of non-specific interactions on the most commonly used GMA-co-EDMA monolith comes from hydrophobic effects. To reduce such non-specific interactions, we developed a new hydrophilic glycidyl methacrylate-based monolith by replacing the EDMA crosslinker by the more hydrophilic NN' Methylenebisacrylamide (MBA). Optimization of the synthesis parameters (monomer content, initiation type, temperature) has focused on the reduction of non-specific interaction with the monolithic support while maximizing the amount of protein that can be grafted onto the monolith at the issue of its synthesis. The retention data of the 41 test solutes on the new poly(GMA-co-MBA) monolith shows a drastic reduction of non-specific interactions except for cationic compounds. The particular behavior of cationic compounds is due to their electrostatic interactions with carboxylic groups resulting from the partial acidic hydrolysis of amide groups of MBA during the epoxide ring opening step. So, the ring opening step in acidic media was replaced by a hot water treatment to avoid side reaction on MBA. The new monolith poly(GMA-co-MBA) not only has improved hydrophilic surface properties but also a higher protein density (16 ± 0.8 pmol cm-1 instead of 8 ± 0.3 pmol cm-1). To highlight the benefits of this new hydrophilic monolith for affinity chromatographic studies, frontal affinity chromatography experiments were conducted on these monoliths grafted with con A.

Selective Separation and Analysis of Catecholamines in Urine Based on Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction by Mercaptophenylboronic Acid Functionalized Fe3O4-NH2@Au Magnetic Nanoparticles Coupled with HPLC. Abstract
A novel magnetic solid phase extraction based on mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA)-functionalized Fe3O4-NH2@Au nanomaterial (Fe3O4-NH2@Au-MPBA) was developed for selective separation and enrichment of catecholamines (including dopamine, norepinephrine and adrenaline). Fe3O4-NH2@Au-MPBA nanoparticles were achieved by self-assembly-anchoring MPBA molecules on the surface of Fe3O4-NH2@Au nanocomposites, which were synthesized via a facial ultrasonic auxiliary in situ reduction process. The interaction between cis-diol from catecholamines and boronic acid was reversible and could be flexibly controlled by adjusting pH value. The catecholamines could be quickly adsorbed by Fe3O4-NH2@Au-MPBA in weak alkaline solution (pH 8.0–9.0) and subsequently released in acid solution (pH 1.0–2.0). The process of adsorption and dissociation was very fast. Furthermore, the three catecholamines could be detected in urine from children by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detector. Under optimal conditions, norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (EP) and dopamine (DA) were separated very well from internal standard and exhibited a good linearity in the range of 2.5–500.0 ng mL−1, with correlation coefficients of r2 > 0.9907. Limits of detection (LOD) (signal to noise = 3) were 0.39, 0.27 and 0.60 ng mL−1 for NE, EP and DA, respectively. Recoveries for the spiked catecholamines were in the range of 85.4–105.2% with the relative standard deviation (RSD) < 11.5%.

Abstract
A novel magnetic borate-functionalized metal-organic framework nanocomposite was designed and fabricated for selective enrichment of catecholamines from human urine. Firstly, the polytannic acid (PTA) layer with natural low-cost and ecofriendly polyphenol tannic acid as the organic ligand and Fe3+ as the cross-linker was coated onto the surface of Fe3O4. Then, the borate-functionalized metal-organic framework (MIL-100(Fe)-B) with 5-boronobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid as a ligand fragment was modified onto the PTA-coated Fe3O4 through a metal-ligand-fragment coassembly strategy. The obtained smart porous adsorbent Fe3O4@PTA@MIL-100(Fe)-B was confirmed by means of several characterization methods and then applied as an effective magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) sorbent for specific extraction of trace catecholamines in human urine. The Plackett-Burman design was used for screening the variables significantly affecting the extraction efficiency. Then, the significant factors were further investigated by the Box-Behnken design to determine the optimal extraction conditions. Under the optimal conditions, a method for selective MSPE combined with high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector for the quantitation of catecholamines in human urine was developed and validated. With the proposed method, the linearity range was from 0.500 to 500 ng mL-1 for norepinephrine and epinephrine and from 1.00 to 500 ng mL-1 for dopamine. The detection limits were 0.050, 0.11, and 0.20 ng mL-1 for norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine, respectively. The recoveries from spiking experiments varied from 91.5 to 108% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.80-4.8%. The established method is rapid, sensitive, accurate, inexpensive, and ecofriendly and was successfully applied to the determination of the target catecholamines in human urine samples.

Abstract
Boronate affinity is an important method for the enrichment and separation of cis-diol containing compounds, but most of the conventional boronate materials suffer from weak binding strength as well as low binding capacity towards glycoproteins due to the use of single boronic acids as ligands. In this work, a novel multidentate boronate magnetic adsorbent was assembled by using amined polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane as spacer and a diboronic acid as ligand. The specially designed adsorbent exhibited high adsorption capacity for cis-diols due to the high density of phenylbronic acid moieties. More interestingly, the dissociation constants toward glycoproteins on the material were lowered to be ∼10-6 M, being at least 3 orders lower than the single boronic acid bonded adsorbents. By comparing the binding properties of small molecules containing one and two pairs of cis-diols, the enhanced binding strength of glycoproteins on the multidentate boronate magnetic adsorbent was attributed to the synergistic binding of glycoproteins on the special interface. The new materials successfully captured glycoproteins from 1000-fold diluted egg white, suggesting that the material could be an optional alternative adsorbent for enriching trace glycoproteins from complex bio-samples.
