Advances in solid-phase extraction techniques: Role of nanosorbents for the enrichment of antibiotics for analytical quantification

Antibiotics are life-saving medications for treating bacterial infections; however it has been discovered that resistance developed by bacteria against these incredible agents is the primary contributing factor to rising global mortality rates. The fundamental cause of the emergence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is the presence of antibiotic residues in various environmental matrices. Although antibiotics are present in diluted form in environmental matrices like water, consistent exposure of bacteria to these minute levels is enough for the resistance to develop. So, identifying these tiny concentrations of numerous antibiotics in various and complicated matrices will be a crucial step in controlling their disposal in those matrices. Solid phase extraction, a popular and customizable extraction technology, was developed according to the aspirations of the researchers. It is a unique alternative technique that could be implemented either alone or in combination with other approaches at different stages because of the multitude of sorbent varieties and techniques. Initially, sorbents are utilized for extraction in their natural state. The basic sorbent has been modified over time with nanoparticles and multilayer sorbents, which have indeed helped to accomplish the desired extraction efficiencies. Among the current traditional extraction techniques such as liquid-liquid extraction, protein precipitation, and salting out techniques, solid-phase extractions (SPE) with nanosorbents are most productive because, they can be automated, selective, and can be integrated with other extraction techniques. This review aims to provide a broad overview of advancements and developments in sorbents with a specific emphasis on the applications of SPE techniques used for antibiotic detection and quantification in various matrices in the last two decades.

Use of aloin-based and rosin-based electrospun nanofibers as natural nanosorbents for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phenoxyacetic acid herbicides by microextraction in packed syringe method prior to GC-FID detection

The synthesis of three kinds of sorbents is described. The first kind was a hydrophobic nanofiber as a specific sorbent for non-polar compounds. The second one was a hydrophilic nanofiber as a specific sorbent for polar compounds and the third one was a generic sorbent synthesized from hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds. The functional groups were natural compounds extracted from aloin plant and gum of pine tree. The aloin/polyacrylonitrile (PAN), rosin/PAN, and aloin/rosin/PAN electrospun nanofibers were synthesized through electrospinning strategy and then characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thereafter, the synthesized sorbents were used in microextraction using the packed syringe (MEPS) method. The determination was conducted using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Under the optimum condition, the method using aloin/rosin/PAN nanofibers as a sorbent showed a good linearity in the range 1.0-250 ng mL^-1 for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (as a model for non-polar compounds) and 1.0-200 ng mL^-1 for phenoxyacetic acid herbicides (CAPs) (as a model for polar compounds) with correlation coefficient (R²) higher than 0.997. Limits of detections (LODs) for PAHs and CAPs were in the range 0.1-0.3 ng mL^-1 and 0.3-0.5 ng mL^-1, respectively. The intra-day (n = 3) and inter-day (between 3 days) relative standard deviations (RDSs%) were in the range 6.3-12.3% for a single syringe. Finally, the MEPS-GC-FID method was applied as a simple, facile, and time and cost-effective method to analyze environmental, farm, and industrial water samples. Graphical abstract Herein, aloin/rosin/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofiber was successfully synthesized and applied as a sorbent for extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as non-polar compounds and phenoxyacetic acid herbicides (CPAs) as polar compounds from aqueous solutions before GC-FID analysis.

Materials for Solid-Phase Extraction of Organic Compounds

This review provides an overview of the most recent developments involving materials for solid-phase extraction applied to determine organic contaminants. It mainly concerns polymer-based sorbents that include high-capacity, as well as selective sorbents, inorganic-based sorbents that include those prepared using sol-gel technology along with structured porous materials based on inorganic species, and carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes. Different types of magnetic nanoparticles coated with these materials are also reviewed. Such materials, together with their main morphological and chemical features, are described, as are some representative examples of their application as solid-phase extraction materials to extract organic compounds from different types of samples, including environmental water, biological fluids, and food.
