A Review of the Analysis of Phthalates by Gas Chromatography in Aqueous and Food Matrices

As a commonly well-known industrial chemical, phthalates are produced in high volumes to be used in various consumer products (e.g., plasticizers, medical devices, construction materials, and toys) to enhance softness, durability, transparency, and flexibility. Phthalates are generally not chemically bonded to the polymer chain of the plastic in which they are mixed. Thus, they may leach, migrate, or evaporate into indoor/outdoor air, and foodstuffs. In this review, a comprehensive overview of several sample preparation methods coupled with gas chromatography for the analysis of phthalates in various kinds of complex matrices, with a focus on the last 20 years' worth of papers. The review begins by highlighting the environmental significance of phthalate pollution along with the various routes to their exposure to general population. Then, the discussion is extended to cover the pretreatment and extraction techniques for phthalates for their quantitation based on gas chromatographic approach. Finally, the present and future challenges for the detection of phthalates in aqueous and food matrices are discussed.

Modern automated microextraction procedures for bioanalytical, environmental, and food analyses

Sample preparation frequently is considered the most critical stage of the analytical workflow. It affects the analytical throughput and costs; moreover, it is the primary source of error and possible sample contamination. To increase efficiency, productivity, and reliability, while minimizing costs and environmental impacts, miniaturization and automation of sample preparation are necessary. Nowadays, several types of liquid-phase and solid-phase microextractions are available, as well as different automatization strategies. Thus, this review summarizes recent developments in automated microextractions coupled with liquid chromatography, from 2016 to 2022. Therefore, outstanding technologies and their main outcomes, as well as miniaturization and automation of sample preparation, are critically analyzed. Focus is given to main microextraction automation strategies, such as flow techniques, robotic systems, and column-switching approaches, reviewing their applications to the determination of small organic molecules in biological, environmental, and food/beverage samples.

Carboxylated mesoporous carbon hollow spheres for the efficient solid-phase microextraction of aromatic amines

An efficient and stable fiber coating is of great importance for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). In this study, carboxylated mesoporous carbon hollow spheres (MCHS-COOH) were developed as an efficient SPME coating of polar aromatic amines (AAs) for the first time. The MCHS-COOH coating material with high specific surface area (1182.32 m² g^-1), large pore size (10.14 nm), and rich oxygen-containing groups was fabricated via a facile H₂O₂ post-treatment. The as-prepared MCHS-COOH-coated fiber exhibited fast adsorption rate and excellent extraction properties, mainly due to its π-π interactions, hollow structure, and abundant affinity sites (carboxyl groups). Subsequently, coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), a sensitive method with low limits of detection (0.08-2.0 ng L^-1), a wide linear range (0.3-500.0 ng L^-1), and good repeatability (2.0-8.8%, n = 6) was developed for the analysis of AAs. The developed method was validated against three river water samples, with satisfactory relative recoveries being obtained. The above results demonstrated that the prepared MCHS-COOH-coated fiber exhibited good adsorption capacity, suggesting a promising application to monitor trace polar compounds in real environment.

In Situ Rapid Electrochemical Fabrication of Porphyrin-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks: Novel Fibers for Electro-Enhanced Solid-Phase Microextraction

Electro-enhanced solid-phase microextraction (EE-SPME) is a bright separation and enrichment technique that integrates solid-phase microextraction with the electric field. It retains the excellent extraction performance of SPME technology while having the advantages of efficient driving of electric field and special interaction between the electric field and electrons in the molecules of material structure. Replacing conventional SPME fibers with highly efficient and highly conductive original EE-SPME fibers is critical for the practical applications of these technologies. Here, a novel fiber preparation strategy was proposed to obtain a highly conductive porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (POR-COF) by one-step electropolymerization. Benefiting from the excellent semiconducting properties of porphyrin groups, the POR-COF can be spontaneously polymerized on the fiber surface under an appropriate voltage within a few hours. Its performance was evaluated by the EE-SPME of phthalate esters (PAEs) from food and environmental samples, followed by gas chromatography-tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) technology. The results showed that the POR-COF fiber has been successfully used for the detection of trace PAEs in beverages, industrial wastewater, lake water, and oyster samples with high adsorption selectivity and satisfactory sensitivity. The remarkable extraction properties are mainly attributed to the synergistic effect from material characteristics and electrical parameters' control in the extraction process. The presented strategy for the controlled design and synthesis of highly conductive porphyrin-based covalent organic framework fibers offers prospects in developing EE-SPME technologies.

Self-synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles-pH-mediated dispersive solid phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography for the determination of quinolones in biological matrices

A simple and efficient pH-mediated dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) based on terbium doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂-Tb NPs) combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been firstly developed for the determination of quinolones (QNs) in various biological samples. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated to indicate that the kinetic and equilibrium adsorption were well-described by pseudo-second order kinetic and Henry, Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The parameters influencing the extraction performance were systematically investigated. The QNs are transferred into TiO₂-Tb NPs in the first step at pH = 6.0 and eluted into acidic aqueous phase at pH = 2.5 in the second step. Under the optimum extraction and determination conditions, a linearity range with the coefficient of determination (R²) from 0.9977 to 0.9991 were obtained in a range of 10-10,000 ng mL^-1. The limits of detection (LODs) based on a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 were 3.3 ng mL^-1. The recoveries of the three QNs in human urine, rabbit plasma and serum samples ranged from 69.3% to 117.6%, with standard deviations ranging from 2.4% to 9.9%. Therefore, this pH-mediated dSPE-HPLC method exhibited the advantages of remarkable sensitivity, ease of operation, rapidity, low cost and environmental friendliness.

Synthesis of CoNi-layered double hydroxide on graphene oxide as adsorbent and construction of detection method for taste and odor compounds in smelling water

Taste and odor (T&O) compounds are important water pollutant, some of which are toxic. The relevant studies are all expand upon the well-known T&O compounds but for the unknown odors in smelling water. In this work, a method combining purge and trap with gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (PT-GC/MS) and disperse solid-phase extraction with gas chromatograph (GC) was first proposed to detect T&O compounds in unknown odorous water accurately. Firstly, PT-GC/MS was used for a qualitative test on unknown odors in smelling water and determine the analytes. The hollow CoNi-layered double hydroxide (LDH) on graphene oxide (GO) was then used as a composite adsorbent to pretreat the water, in which the GO provided large specific surface, and the LDH worked as a confinement cavity to enhance capture and retention capacity for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). According to the properties of T&O compounds determined by PT-GC/MS in water, a corresponding GC method was established for accurately quantitative analysis. In this paper, five T&O compounds were detected simultaneously, including dimethyl sulfide, meistylene, N, N-dimethylbenzylamine, 2, 4-dimethylbenzaldehyde and 2, 4-di-tert-butylphenol. Extraction parameters were optimized, including ratio of desorption solvent, amount of adsorbent, pH value, etc. Under the optimal conditions, the detection limits for analysis were 1.14 μg/L to 3.07 mg/L. The satisfactory recoveries were 94-98%. Furthermore, two optimal determination outcomes of odor waters from different places support the practicability of the method, which is expected to be widely used in the detection of unknown odors in smelling water.

In situ room-temperature rapidly fabricated imine-linked covalent organic framework coated fibers for efficient solid-phase microextraction of pyrethroids

A facile and rapid strategy for preparation of covalent organic framework (COF) coated fibers at ambient temperature is urgently needed for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technology. In this work, an in situ room-temperature rapid growth strategy was developed to high-efficiently fabricate imine-linked COF (TPB-DVA) coated fibers in as little as 30 min at room temperature, and the thickness of the coating reached 9 μm. The prepared TPB-DVA coated fiber offer high thermal and chemical stability, and outstanding service lifetime. Moreover, we generalize this strategy to other two imine-linked COF (TPB-DMTP and TFPB-TAPB) coated fibers and the fibers were fabricated at room temperature for 3 h and 12 h, respectively, which demonstrate the applicability of this strategy. Subsequently, a SPME-GC-MS/MS analytical method was developed for trace pyrethroids (PYs) detection, which exhibited high enhancement factors (EFs, 2700-13195), wide linear range (0.08-800 ng L^-1), low limits of detection (LODs, 0.02-0.20 ng L^-1), and good repeatability (RSD ≤ 8.5%, n = 6). Furthermore, the developed analytical method was applied to tea samples and trace PYs (1.31-4.32 ng L^-1) were found with satisfactory recovery (80.2-119.8%). The above results demonstrated that the feasibility of the developed strategy for the facile and rapid fabrication of imine-linked COF coated fibers.

In situ fabrication of nitrogen doped graphitic carbon networks coating for high-performance extraction of pyrethroid pesticides

The tailor-prepare solid phase microextraction (SPME) coatings with stable and excellent properties to effectively extract analytes from sample matrix still remains a challenge. Herein, a nitrogen doped graphitic carbon networks (NG-CNTW) coated fiber was fabricated by direct carbonization of nanosized ZIF-67 crystals (nano-ZIF-67) that grown on stainless steel wire. The NG-CNTW coated fiber coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was applied for enrichment and determination of pyrethroids. The NG-CNTW coating exhibited high surface area and hierarchical porous structures that facilitate diffusion and accessibility of target molecules. Simultaneously, the nitrogen doped and highly graphitic structures endow the coating with high adsorption affinity for aromatic compounds. Under optimum conditions, the SPME-GC-MS/MS method presented wide range of linearity performance (0.08-200.0 ng g^-1), low limits of detection (0.02-0.5 ng g^-1) and good repeatability (RSD < 9.6%) for 8 kinds of pyrethroids. Furthermore, the proposed method was successfully applied in the determination of pyrethroids in grape and cauliflower samples, as the results were in the range of 3.16-15.06 ng g^-1and 2.08-9.29 ng g^-1, respectively. This work not only provides a new method by fabricating carbon nanomaterial coatings in situ derived from MOFs, but also shows great potential of MOFs derivative materials in environmental analysis field.

[Solid phase microextraction-high performance liquid chromatography of fluorinated covalent organic polymer to determine eugenol anesthetics in aquatic products]

Fluorinated covalent organic polymers (F-COPs) constitute a new class of porous materials with a topological structure, large surface area, and potential superiority over other types of polymers in sample preparation. In this study, a F-COP was rapidly synthesized by a simple Schiff-based reaction using 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalaldehyde (TFA) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) as monomers, and by adding scandium (Ⅲ) triflate (Sc(OTf)₃) as the metal catalyst at room temperature. The prepared F-COP was applied as a coating adsorbent for solid phase microextraction (SPME) to enrich three kinds of eugenol anesthetics in aquatic products. The extraction performance of an enrichment medium is an important factor for practical application in real analytical projects. This F-COP adsorbent with rich π-stacking electrons contained abundant phenyl rings and imine (-C=N) groups throughout the molecular framework. The adsorption mechanism was explored and discussed based on the π-π affinity and hydrogen bonding interaction, which contributed to its strong recognition affinity to targets. The F-COP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that the novel F-COP-SPME bar exhibited a rough and porous surface structure, good preparation reproducibility, and high stability. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was performed with an ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) wavelength detector. A Diamonsil plus C18 column (250 mm×4.6 mm, 5 μm) was used as the analytical column. The mobile phase comprised 60% methanol and 40% ultrapure water, and was flowed at 0.800 mL/min. The injected volume of the sample was 20.0 μL. The column temperature was maintained at 30 ℃ and the detection wavelength was set to 280 nm. Further, the SPME conditions (including extraction time, stirring rate, desorption solvent, and desorption time) that influenced the extraction efficiencies of the eugenol anesthetics were investigated in detail. Thus, the optimized F-COP-SPME bar conditions were established as follows: extraction time: 30 min; stirring rate: 700 r/min; desorption solvent: acetonitrile; desorption time: 10 min. By combining F-COP-based SPME with HPLC-UV analysis, an effective method was developed for the extraction and determination of eugenol, eugenyl acetate, and methyl eugenol residues in aquatic products. The method demonstrated good linearity in the range of 10-1000 μg/L for eugenol and eugenyl acetate, and 10-1500 μg/L for methyl eugenol, with correlation coefficients (r²) greater than 0.9961, low limits of detection (2.9-4.5 μg/kg, S/N=3), and excellent precision (relative standard deviations lower than 8.7%, n=5). Finally, the method was applied for the effective extraction of three kinds of eugenol anesthetics from tilapia and shrimp samples. The obtained recoveries were in the range of 76.7%-98.7% and 80.3%-104% with relative standard deviations of 8.5%-11.8% and 8.6%-12.4% (n=5), respectively. These results demonstrated that the F-COP is promising for use as an adsorbent in SPME for the determination of eugenol anesthetics in aquatic products. The developed method was suitable for the qualitative and quantitative determination of three kinds of eugenol anesthetics in aquatic products, yielding a satisfactory purification effect and sensitivity.

Oxygenated carbon nanotubes cages coated solid-phase microextraction fiber for selective extraction of migrated aromatic amines from food contact materials

In this study, an oxygenated carbon nanotubes cages (OCNTCs) material was prepared by calcinating zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) and then oxidizing the resulting material. The OCNTCs was used as a high efficient solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating to extract aromatic amines (AAs). The obtained fiber exhibited high selectivity for AAs over other organic compounds in food contact materials (FCMs) due to matched pore size and abundant oxygen-containing groups. Subsequently, coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), a sensitive method with low limits of detection (0.1-2.0 ng L^-1), wide linear ranges (0.5-500 ng L ^-1) and good precision (RSDs ≤ 8.6%) was developed for analysis of AAs. The specific migrated AAs from food simulants that prepared by standardized migration and thermal migration test were successfully analysed by this developed method with satisfactory recoveries (81.6% - 118.1%) and precision (RSDs, 2.1-9.5%). The results demonstrated that the prepared OCNTCs-coated fibers displayed excellent extraction performance, suggesting a promising application to investigate the migration behaviors of AAs.

Bar adsorptive microextraction device coated with polyimide microsphere assembled by nanosheets combined with thermal desorption-gas chromatography for trace analysis of nitroaromatic explosives in environmental waters

Polyimide (PI) microspheres assembled by nanosheets were used for bar adsorptive microextraction (BAμE) for the first time. The PI microsphere possessed self-organized hierarchical nanostructure, large specific surface area (170 m²/g) and good thermostability (up to 400 °C). The BAμE device was prepared by adhering the PI microspheres on a quartz bar with Kapton double sided tape. Trace nitroaromatic explosives in environmental waters were extracted by the BAμE device, desorbed by thermal desorption (TD), and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The reproducibility of five BAμE devices prepared in parallel was less than 13.0% (expressed as relative standard deviation, RSD). The BAμE device could stand up to 30 extraction/desorption cycles without decrease of extraction efficiency. The results of method validation showed that the BAμE-TD/GC-MS method possessed wide linearity (0.05-50 μg/L or 0.05-20 μg/L), high correlation coefficients (> 0.9987), good precision (RSDs < 11.8%), low detection limits (0.005-0.013 μg/L) and high enrichment factors (528-1410). Relative recoveries were in the range of 72.2-122.6% with RSDs between 0.1% and 10.5% for real water samples. These results proved that the proposed method was a good choice for determination of organic pollutants in water samples.
