Abstract
In an attempt to enhance the adsorptive properties while addressing the limitations associated with powdered nature, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67)-derived cobalt-doped nanoporous carbon (Co-NPC) was incorporated into chitosan and then shaped like hollow fiber by a simple casting method. Further modification with polyaniline (PANI) was also performed to improve extraction efficacy. The applicability of the modified hollow fibers was then investigated by packing them into a cartridge and utilizing them for conducting hollow fibers-packed in-cartridge micro solid-phase extraction (HF-IC µ-SPE) of parabens including methylparaben (MP), ethylparaben (EP), and propylparaben (PP) from human breast milk samples. Factors affecting extraction performance were studied using central composite design (CCD). Under the optimal conditions, good linearity was achieved within the range of 0.5-500 μg L-1 with the determination coefficient (R2) higher than 0.9901. All analytical parameters were obtained by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. In this regard, the limits of detection values (LODs) were 0.5 to 1.0 μg L-1. Intra- and inter-assay precision RSDs % were lower than 7.9 % and 8.4 %, respectively. Relative recoveries of breast milk samples were found in the range of 88.0-109.5 %. Accordingly, the novel nanocomposite sorbent based on PANI@Co-NPC/Chitosan hollow fiber was found to be an efficient, simple, and cost-effective packing material for HF-IC µ-SPE. It can also be offered as a promising alternative adsorbent to coated conventional hollow fiber.

Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been widely proposed for the extraction, clean-up, and preconcentration of analytes of environmental concern. Enrichment capabilities, preconcentration efficiency, sample throughput, and selectivity in extracting target compounds greatly depend on the materials used as SPME coatings. Supramolecular materials have emerged as promising porous coatings to be used for the extraction of target compounds due to their unique selectivity, three-dimensional framework, flexible design, and possibility to promote the interaction between the analytes and the coating by means of multiple oriented functional groups. The present review will cover the state of the art of the last 5 years related to SPME coatings based on metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and supramolecular macrocycles used for environmental applications.

Abstract
The chemical industry explosion in the 20th century has led to increased environmental pollution, affecting fauna, flora, and waterways. These substances alter water's taste, color, and smell, making it unfit for consumption or toxic. Agricultural water networks face threats from pollution before and after treatment. Some chemical contaminants, like pesticides, are embedded in natural biogeochemical cycles. In this study, we developed a simple and low-cost procedure for the fabrication of needles coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as an efficient sorbent for the microextraction of organic pollutant traces from water. The prepared needles were used as an alternative for commercial solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) devices in analytical chemistry. The PDMS polymeric phase was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetry (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PDMS-coated needles were used for extraction of thirteen pesticides by direct-immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME) from contaminated waters, followed by determination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The developed analytical method showed limits of detection (LODs) between 0.3 and 2.5 ng mL-1 and RSDs in the range of 0.8-12.2%. The homemade needles were applied for the extraction of pesticides in surface and ground aqueous samples collected from an agricultural area. Several target pesticides were identified and quantified in the investigated water samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The practical application of moisture sensitive metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in extraction technology faces challenges related to competitive adsorption and water stability. The target analytes cannot be effectively extracted under humid conditions due to the competitive moisture adsorption and/or framework structure collapse of MOFs. In this study, the microporous organic networks (MONs) were synthesized through Sonogashira coupling reaction to use for hydrophobic modification on the surface of MOF-199. RESULTS The MOF-199@MON as coating was deposited on stainless steel wires for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of benzene series (BTEX) in aqueous environments. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the MOF-199@MON coated fiber for SPME coupled with GC-MS for the determination of BTEX gave the linear range of 0.5-500 μg L-1, the limit of detections (LODs, S/N = 3) of 0.01-0.04 μg L-1, the limit of quantifications (LOQs, S/N = 10) of 0.04-0.12 μg L-1, the enhancement factors of 3567-4878, and the intra-day, inter-day and fiber-to-fiber precisions (relative standard deviations, RSDs) of 1.0-9.8, 1.9-7.9 and 4.5-9.5 %, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the analysis of BTEX in water samples with the recoveries of 71.0 %-113 %. SIGNIFICANCE This work reveals the home-made SPME fibers have a long service life (the extraction efficiency of fiber decreased by only 7.26 %-13.14 % after 100 cycles). The potential of MON functionalized MOFs as effective adsorbents for the SPME of pollutants in the water environment.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the most harmful persistent organic pollutants that possess high carcinogenicity and teratogenicity; hence, establishing a highly sensitive analytical method for monitoring PAHs in environmental samples is an urgent need. However, due to the low PAHs content in environmental samples and the complex matrix of the samples, it is difficult to directly determine the amount of PAHs using the existing analytical instruments. Therefore, an essential pretreatment of environmental samples should be carried out before instrumental analysis. In most pretreatment techniques, the extraction efficiency depends on the characteristics of the extraction materials. Currently, metal-organic framework materials (MOFs), which are porous materials self-assembled by metal ions and organic ligands, are used as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating materials for the extraction of PAHs. However, the following problems limit the application of MOFs in the SPME field: (1) MOF coating materials often require a long equilibration time for extraction because the it is difficult for the target to reach the deep adsorption sites; (2) In addition, most MOFs are formed by the coordination of single metal ions with organic monomers. The single type of open metal active sites is not conducive for realizing high extraction performance. In this study, a hollow bimetal-organic framework (H-BiMOF) was synthesized by the solvothermal method and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, etc. The TEM images and XRD patterns demonstrated the successful synthesis of H-BiMOF with a hollow structure, which was formed through the competitive coordination between benzoic acid and water. The H-BiMOF material showed type-Ⅳ isotherms with a surface area of 1437 m2/g and excellent thermal stability. Subsequently, a H-BiMOF-coated SPME fiber was prepared by the physical adhesion method and used to extract trace PAHs from environmental samples. Due to the hollow structure of H-BiMOF, the prepared fibers offer the advantages of high utilization of specific surface area as well as short mass transfer distance, so that the extraction process quickly reaches equilibrium. At the same time, the introduction of bimetals provides a variety of metal active sites, which improves the extraction efficiency of the fiber against electron-rich cloud targets such as PAHs. The prepared fiber also had good service life, with at least 150 cycles. Combined with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), a new method for the determination of PAHs in environmental water samples was established. Single factor experiments were performed to investigate the effects of the SPME conditions on the analytical performance. Under the optimal conditions, the established method showed low limits of detection (0.01-0.08 ng/L), wide linear range (0.03-500.0 ng/L), good linearity (correlation coefficients≥0.9986), and acceptable reproducibility (relative standard deviations≤9.8%, n=5). Finally, typical water samples were analyzed by the established method. Four environmental water samples were collected from Dianchi Lake, Poyang Lake, Taihu Lake, and Xihu Lake in China. No benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) and chrysene (CHR) were detected in any of the water samples. However, 17.9 ng/L of fluorene (FLU) and 5.3 ng/L of phenanthrene (PHE) were found in the Poyang Lake sample; 11.3 ng/L of fluoranthene (FLA) and 24.2 ng/L of pyrene (PYR) were found in the Taihu Lake sample; 50.0 ng/L of FLU, 19.5 ng/L of PHE, 14.9 ng/L of anthracene (ANT), 34.2 ng/L of FLA, and 44.5 ng/L of PYR were found in the Xihu Lake sample. The contents of the PAHs detected in all the lake water samples were lower than the Chinese National Standard GB 5749-2006 (2000.0 ng/L). The results of this study indicate that the developed method is suitable for the sensitive detection of trace levels of PAHs in real environmental water samples.

Abstract
Lotus-like Ni@NiO embedded porous carbons (Ni@NiO/PCs) were fabricated by pyrolysis of MOF-74/cellulose nanocrystal hybrids, and used as a solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating for ultrasensitive determination of chlorobenzenes (CBs) from water combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Owing to its abundant chemical groups, high porosity, and excellent thermal stability, the as-prepared Ni@NiO/PCs presented superior extraction performance compared to commercial SPME coatings. Notably, Ni@NiO/PCs derived from MOF-74/CNC hybrids presented higher extraction efficiencies towards CBs than that derived from pristine CNC and MOF-74 due to the formation of micro/mesopores and more abundant oxygen-containing groups. Under the optimum extraction conditions, the proposed analytical method presented wide linearity range (0.5-1500 ng L-1), ultra-low detection of limit (0.005-0.049 ng L-1), and excellent precision with relative standard deviations of 4.7-9.2% for a single fiber and 8.8-10.9% for 5 fibers, and long lifetime (≥160 times). The proposed analytical method was finally applied for determination of CBs from real water samples, and the recoveries were in the range of 93.2-116.8% towards eight CBs. This study delivered a novel and efficient sorbent as SPME coating to extraction and determination of CBs from water.

Abstract
Benzene compounds that are prevalent in the soil as organic pollutants mainly include BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and three xylene isomers) and PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). These pose a severe threat to many aspects of human health. Therefore, the accurate measurement of BTEX and PAHs concentrations in the soil is of great importance. The samples for analysis of BTEX and PAHs need to be suitable for the various detection methods after pretreatment, which include Soxhlet extraction, ultrasonic extraction, solid-phase microextraction, supercritical extraction, and needle trap. The detection techniques mainly consist of gas chromatography (GC), mass spectrometry (MS), and online sensors, and provide comprehensive information on contaminants in the soil. Their performance is evaluated in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and recovery. Recently, there has been rapid progress in the pretreatment and analysis methods for the quantitative and qualitative analyses of BTEX and PAHs. Therefore, it is necessary to produce a timely and in-depth review of the emerging pretreatment and analysis methods, which is unfortunately absent from the recent literature. In this work, state-of-art extraction techniques and analytical methods have been summarized for the determination of BTEX and PAHs in soil, with a particular focus on the potential and limitations of the respective methods for different aromatic hydrocarbons. Accordingly, the paper will describe the basic methodological knowledge, as well as the recent advancement of pretreatment and analysis methods for samples containing BTEX and PAHs.

Abstract
In this work, carbon dot-decorated graphite carbon nitride composites (CDs/g-C3N4) were synthesized and innovatively used as a SPME coating for the sensitive determination of chlorobenzenes (CBs) from water samples, coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The CDs/g-C3N4 coating presented superior extraction performance in comparison to pristine g-C3N4, owing to the enhancement of active groups by CDs. The extraction capacities of as-prepared SPME coatings are higher than those of commercial coatings due to the functions of nitrogen-containing and oxygen-containing group binding, π-π stacking, and hydrophobic interactions. Under optimized conditions, the proposed method exhibits a wide linearity range (0.25-2500 ng L-1), extremely low detection of limits (0.002-0.086 ng L-1), and excellent precision, with relative standard deviations of 5.3-9.7% for a single fiber and 7.5-12.6% for five fibers. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of CBs from real river water samples, with spiked recoveries ranging from 73.4 to 109.1%. This study developed a novel and efficient SPME coating material for extracting organic pollutants from environmental samples.

In-situ fabrication of a chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework coating for solid-phase microextraction of polychlorinated biphenyls in surface water. Anal Chim Acta 2021; 1186:339120. Abstract
The functionalization of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) identifies significant potential for developing selective coating materials for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Herein, a chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework (CF-COF) was in-situ synthesized by employing triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 2,5-dichloro-1,4-phenylenediamine (2,5-DCA) as monomers on an amino-functionalized stainless steel wire. The obtained CF-COF coated fiber exhibited a higher enrichment capacity for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) than commercial fibers and non-chlorinated COF fiber, owing to a more hydrophobic surface, size-matching effect, a large number of micropores and the π-π stacking interactions between COF coating and analytes. As a practical application, the CF-COF coated fiber was applied to the headspace extraction of 17 PCBs prior to their quantification by GC/MS. The established analytical method offered a good linearity in the range of 0.1-1000 ng L-1, low detection limits of 0.0015-0.0088 ng L-1, and satisfactory enhancement factors (EFs) of 699-4281. The repeatability for single fiber and the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility was lower than 9.26% and 9.33%, respectively. The proposed method was verified to be sensitive, selective, and applicable for the analysis of ultra-trace PCBs in environmental surface water samples with the recoveries ranged from 78.7% to 124.0%.

Hollow zeolitic imidazolate framework-7 coated stainless steel fiber for solid phase microextraction of volatile biomarkers in headspace gas of breast cancer cell lines. Anal Chim Acta 2021; 1181:338901. [PMID: 34556209 DOI: 10.1016/j.aca.2021.338901] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/14/2021] [Revised: 07/28/2021] [Accepted: 07/30/2021] [Indexed: 10/20/2022]
Abstract
In this work, we reported the preparation of the hollow zeolitic imidazolate framework-7 (ZIF-7) via etching ZIF-7 with tannic acid, and further fabricated the hollow ZIF-7 coated fiber for the solid phase microextraction (SPME) of the five volatile biomarkers (acetone, isopropanol, hexanal, hexanol and decanal) generated from breast cancer cell lines. The hollow structure not only endowed higher extraction performance for the SPME of analytes, but also improved the diffusion rate of the analytes inside the hollow ZIF-7. Under the optimal conditions, the hollow ZIF-7 coated fiber offered high extraction capacity (25-153 mg g-1) and enhancement factors (EFs, 2023-11250) for the five biomarkers, good linearity (R2 > 0.9918) of acetone and isopropanol (2.5-500 μg L-1) and hexanol, hexanal, and decanal (1.0-100 μg L-1), low limits of detection (S/N = 3) of 0.07-0.53 μg L-1 and the limit of quantifications (LOQs, S/N = 10) of 0.23-1.76 μg L-1. The precisions (RSDs, %) for intra-day (n = 6), inter-day (n = 5) and fiber-to-fiber (n = 6) were 2.8-7.5%, 4.3-8.5%, and 4.2-14.6%, respectively. The high EFs of the hollow ZIF-7 coated fiber for the five biomarkers resulted from the integrated effects of the large surface area, the unique porous structure, hydrophobic interaction, gate-opening effect, and enhanced properties after etching including faster mass transport, multiple active components, and more exposed active sites. The fabricated hollow ZIF-7 coated fiber lasted at least 140 cycles of extraction/desorption/aging without obvious decrease of extraction ability and no change of crystal structure. Finally, the hollow ZIF-7 coated fiber combined with GC-FID had been successfully used to detect the five biomarkers in the headspace gas of human breast cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231) and normal mammary cell lines (CCD-1095Sk) with the recoveries of 84-105%. These results revealed the prospect of hollow MOFs as efficient adsorbents for sample pretreatment.

Abstract
Core-shell structured Fe2O3/CeO2@MnO2 microspheres were fabricated and used as solid-phase microextraction coating for determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water samples. XPS spectra demonstrated the generation of abundant surface oxygen on Fe2O3/CeO2@MnO2 microspheres, which provided binding sites for enhancement of analyte extraction. Under optimized conditions, the proposed method presented good linearity in the concentration range 0.04-100 ng mL-1, with low limits of detection varying from 0.38 to 3.57 ng L-1 for eight PAHs. Relative standard deviations for a single fiber and five batches of fibers were in the ranges of 4.1-8.2% and 7.1-11.4%, respectively. The proposed method was successfully used for determination of PAHs in real river water samples with recoveries ranging from 87.1 to 115.9%. The proposed method using as-prepared Fe2O3/CeO2@MnO2 microspheres as SPME coating exhibit significant potential for real sample analysis due to its excellent reproducibility, high sensitivity, and good linearity.

Abstract
Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a popular technique for environmental sample pretreatment. However, SPE usually requires complex sample pretreatment processes, which is time-consuming and inconvenient for real-time and on-site monitoring. Herein, a solvent-free, rapid, and user-friendly SPE device was developed by coating the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/divinylbenzene (DVB) sorbent on the inner wall of a sample bottle. The extraction process and desorption process were both carried out in the bottle. The analytes trapped in the sorbent were thermally desorbed and simultaneously sucked out from the bottle by an air sampling tube equipped on field-portable GC-MS. Different to previous work, the sample pretreatment process didn't require any complicated and time-consuming steps, such as centrifugation or filtration. The total analysis time for each sample was less than 25 min, which was feasible for rapid on-site detection, and thus avoided the losses and contamination of samples in conventional sample storage and transportation processes. Under optimal conditions, the proposed SPE method exhibited wide linear ranges, low detection limits (0.010-0.036 μg L-1, which were much lower than the maximum levels restricted by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Chinese GB3838-2002 standard), good intra-bottle repeatability (6.13-7.17%, n = 3) and satisfactory inter-bottle reproducibility (4.73-6.47%, n = 3). Finally, the method was successfully applied to the rapid detection of BTEX in the field. The recoveries of BTEX in spiked water samples ranged from 89.1% to 116.2%. This work presents a novel SPE approach for rapid on-site monitoring in water samples.

Abstract
Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks are a class of metal-organic frameworks that are topologically isomorphic with zeolites. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks are composed of tetrahedrally coordinated metal ions connected by imidazolate linkers and have a high porosity and chemical stability. Here, we summarize the progress made in the application of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in sample preparation for analytical purposes. This review is focused on analytical methods based on liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, or capillary electrophoresis, where the use of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks has contributed to increasing the sensitivity and selectivity of the method. While bulk zeolitic imidazolate frameworks have been directly used in analytical sample preparation protocols, a variety of strategies for their magnetization or their incorporation into sorbent particles, monoliths, fibers, stir bars, or thin films, have been developed. These modifications have facilitated the handling and application of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for a number of analytical sample treatments including magnetic solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, or thin film microextraction, among other techniques.

Abstract
Sample preparation is one of the most crucial steps in analytical processes. Commonly used methods, including solid-phase extraction, dispersive solid-phase extraction, dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction, and solid-phase microextraction, greatly depend on the extraction materials. In recent decades, a vast number of materials have been studied and used in sample preparation for chromatography. Due to the unique structural properties, extraction materials significantly improve the performance of extraction devices. Endowing extraction materials with suitable structural properties can shorten the pretreatment process and improve the extraction efficiency and selectivity. To understand the structure-performance relationships of extraction materials, this review systematically summarizes the structural properties, including the pore size, pore shape, pore volume, accessibility of active sites, specific surface area, functional groups and physicochemical properties. The mechanisms by which the structural properties influence the extraction performance are also elucidated in detail. Finally, three principles for the design and synthesis of extraction materials are summarized. This review can provide systematic guidelines for synthesizing extraction materials and preparing extraction devices.
