In-situ growth of 3D rosette-like copper nanoparticles on carbon cloth for enhanced sensing of ammonia based on copper electrodissolution

Simultaneous Determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total Nitrogen, Ammonia, and Phosphate in Surface Water Based on a Multielectrode System

A technique for monitoring chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), ammonia (N-NH4), and phosphate (P-PO4) in surface water with a targeted signal multielectrode system (Cu, Ir, Rh, Co(OH)2, and Zr(OH)4 electrodes) is proposed for the first time. Each water quality index is specifically detected by at least two electrodes with distinct selectivity sensing mechanisms. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance measurements are employed for multidimensional signal acquisition, complemented by normalization and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) for principal feature extraction and dimension reduction. Multiple linear regression (MLR), partial least-squares (PLS), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) were employed to evaluate the established prediction model. The precisions of the multielectrode system are ±10%/±5 ppm of COD, ±10%/±0.2 ppm of TN, ±5%/±0.1 ppm of N-NH4, and ±5%/±0.01 ppm of P-PO4. The analysis time of the multielectrode system is reduced from hours to minutes compared with traditional analysis, without any sample pretreatment, facilitating continuous online monitoring in the field. The developed multielectrode system offers a feasible strategy for online in situ monitoring of surface water quality.

Sensitive Electrochemical Detection of Ammonia Nitrogen via a Platinum-Zinc Alloy Nanoflower-Modified Carbon Cloth Electrode

As a common water pollutant, ammonia nitrogen poses a serious risk to human health and the ecological environment. Therefore, it is important to develop a simple and efficient sensing scheme to achieve accurate detection of ammonia nitrogen. Here, we report a simple fabrication electrode for the electrochemical synthesis of platinum-zinc alloy nanoflowers (PtZn NFs) on the surface of carbon cloth. The obtained PtZn NFs/CC electrode was applied to the electrochemical detection of ammonia nitrogen by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The enhanced electrocatalytic activity of PtZn NFs and the larger electrochemical active area of the self-supported PtZn NFs/CC electrode are conducive to improving the ammonia nitrogen detection performance of the sensitive electrode. Under optimized conditions, the PtZn NFs/CC electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a wide linear range from 1 to 1000 µM, a sensitivity of 21.5 μA μM-1 (from 1 μM to 100 μM) and a lower detection limit of 27.81 nM, respectively. PtZn NFs/CC electrodes show excellent stability and anti-interference. In addition, the fabricated electrochemical sensor can be used to detect ammonia nitrogen in tap water and lake water samples.

Enhanced Sensitivity of Electrochemical Sensors for Ammonia-Nitrogen via In-Situ Synthesis PtNi Nanoleaves on Carbon Cloth

Pt-based electrochemical ammonia-nitrogen sensors played a significance role in real-time monitoring the ammonia-nitrogen concentration. The alloying of Pt and transition metals was one of the effective ways to increase the detectability of the sensitive electrode. In this paper, a self-supported electrochemical electrode for the detection of ammonia nitrogen was obtained by the electrodeposition of PtNi alloy nanoleaves on a carbon cloth (PtNi-CC). Experimental results showed that the PtNi-CC electrode exhibited enhanced detection performance with a wide linear range from 0.5 to 500 µM, high sensitivity (7.83 µA µM-1 cm-2 from 0.5 to 150 μM and 0.945 µA µM-1 cm-2 from 150 to 500 μM) and lower detection limit (24 nM). The synergistic effect between Pt and Ni and the smaller lattice spacing of the PtNi alloy were the main reasons for the excellent performance of the electrode. This work showed the great potential of Pt-based alloy electrodes for the detection of ammonia-nitrogen.

Nanomaterials-Functionalized Hydrogels for the Treatment of Cutaneous Wounds

Hydrogels have been utilized extensively in the field of cutaneous wound treatment. The introduction of nanomaterials (NMs), which are a big category of materials with diverse functionalities, can endow the hydrogels with additional and multiple functions to meet the demand for a comprehensive performance in wound dressings. Therefore, NMs-functionalized hydrogels (NMFHs) as wound dressings have drawn intensive attention recently. Herein, an overview of reports about NMFHs for the treatment of cutaneous wounds in the past five years is provided. Firstly, fabrication strategies, which are mainly divided into physical embedding and chemical synthesis of the NMFHs, are summarized and illustrated. Then, functions of the NMFHs brought by the NMs are reviewed, including hemostasis, antimicrobial activity, conductivity, regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, and stimulus responsiveness (pH responsiveness, photo-responsiveness, and magnetic responsiveness). Finally, current challenges and future perspectives in this field are discussed with the hope of inspiring additional ideas.

Glucose determination behaviour of gold microspheres-electrodeposited carbon cloth flexible electrodes in neutral media

Despite numerous advances in the field of nonenzymatic glucose detection, monitoring glucose in physiological applications is still a challenge and is mostly limited to electrode surface modification. This study proposes a simple method for electrodepositing cotton-like gold microspheres (CGMs) on a carbon cloth (CC) flexible electrode, with the potential for the functional supporting substrate to monitor glucose in a neutral environment. It was demonstrated that the voltammetric response of glucose oxidation increased with increases in glucose concentration in the 3D functional flexible substrate; moreover, the amperometric response of glucose oxidation increased over time. The results indicate that the functional flexible electrode-made of gold microspheres-based carbon cloth with a predefined geometry and pore-architecture network to promote the medium-permeation and synergetic effects between CGMs and CC-can be a suitable platform for measuring glucose variation in environments with neutral pH. This is particularly relevant because the oxygen-containing functional groups on the CC surface increase the dehydrogenation rate of glucose oxidation in neutral phosphate-buffered saline.
