Luminescent Sm(III) complex bearing dynamic imine bonds as a multi-responsive fluorescent sensor for F- and PO43- anions together with Zn2+ cation in water samples

Excitation wavelength-dependent lanthanide-disalicylaldehyde coordination hybrid capable of distinguishing D2O from H2O

The increasing demands in fields of anti-counterfeiting, fluorescence analysis, clinical therapy and LED illumination are urgently eager for more excellent optically switchable luminescent materials with the stable and multimodal fluorescence in single-component matrix. Herein, the lanthanide-disalicylaldehyde coordination hybrid H2Qj4/TbxEuy is proposed as an efficient luminescent matrix to connect terbium sensibilization with ESIPT (excited-state intramolecular proton transfer) effects, and three multi-emission hybrids are finally designed and synthesized by regulating Tb3+ and Eu3+ ratios. Surprisingly, the H2Qj4/Tb0.91Eu0.09 shows the excitation wavelength-dependent luminescence in solution which originates from two energy transfer ways of terbium sensibilization effect. It exhibits green and red lights under the 369 and 394 nm UV lamp, respectively. Three hybrids are further used as lab-on-a-molecule fluorescent probes to perform multianalyte detection for various solvents by selected fluorescent sensing channels. By means of PCA (principal component analysis) and HCA (hierarchical cluster analysis), all of them can successfully detect and discriminate17 common solvents, especially the H2O and D2O. Moreover, the H2Qj4/Tb0.91Eu0.09 also shows the wide linear responses of H2O content in D2O, discrimination of two-component solvent mixtures, hygroscopicity evaluation of D2O and information encryption which will advance the progress of multimodal luminescent materials and multianalyte chemosensors.

A highly water-soluble hydrogen-bond-induced emission carbon dots for ratiometric fluorescent detection of water content in organic solvents

Water in organic solvents is a prevalent impurity that significantly influences chemical reactions and industrial processes. Carbon dots (CDs) gained attention as promising tools for chemosensing due to their advantageous characteristics, including easy synthesis, cost-effectiveness, and excellent adjustability and stability. However, limited solubility in water and turn off fluorescence response mode hinder the practical utilization of CDs for water sensing. To tackle such dilemma, a highly water-soluble CDs with distinctive hydrogen-bond-induced emission (HBIE) was rationally designed through introducing sulfone group into the widely employed p-phenylenediamine precursor. The inclusion of sulfone group imparts the CDs with notable water solubility, as well as distinctive ratiometric fluorescent response towards water content, exhibiting high sensitivity and selectivity. Upon exposure to water, the emission color of CDs undergoes a real-time transition from blue to yellow-green, which can be readily discerned by naked eyes. The CDs have been successfully applied in detecting water in commercially available alcohol. This study presents a straightforward yet efficacious approach for rationally design of CDs with unique HBIE characteristics and ratiometric fluorescent response, offering great potential for practical chemosensing applications.

A dynamic Eu(III)-macrocycle served as the turn-on fluorescent probe for distinguishing H2O from D2O

H2O and D2O are an important pair of analogues, and their high-efficient detections are closely related to fields of chemical industry, food processing, semiconductor, environmental monitoring, etc. Because of their extremely similar physical and chemical properties, H2O and D2O can be mutually soluble in any ratios, and it is generally thought that the discrimination of H2O and D2O is an enormous challenge. Herein, upon the fact that vibrational frequency of O-H is greater than O-D, we design a dynamic Eu(III)-macrocycle Eu-2a with two emitters which exhibits the imine bond breakage of macrocycle emitter H2L2a in H2O or D2O, resulting in the turn-on fluorescence of Eu(III) emitter. For their differential fluorescence sensing signals of Eu-2a on three emission bands (433, 500 and 615 nm), the statistical analysis method is employed to produce fully separated fingerprints and thus high-throughput discrimination of 13 common solvents, especially the H2O and D2O. Fluorescent titration experiments by instrumental or smartphone-based analysis method also prove the successful determination of proportional H2O/D2O mixtures together with the good sensitivity and wide linear response range. Moreover, this H2O-triggered fluorescent complex Eu-2a used as the fluorescence ink also shows its potential in information encryption application. This article must be a valuable reference for the areas of lanthanide-based luminescent material, multianalyte detection and information encryption.

A susceptible coordination hybrid based terbium sensibilization coupled ESIPT effects for pattern discrimination of analogues

Multianalyte detection and analogue discrimination are extremely valuable frontier areas for their wide applications in environmental, medical, clinical and industrial analyses. Nowadays, researchers rack their brains on how to develop excellent multianalyte chemosensors that have presented huge challenges in designing high-efficient fluorescent sensing materials and constructing high-throughput detection methods. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to utilize the dual-emission fluorescent detection platform as a lab-on-a-molecule, arising from the disalicylaldehyde-coordinated hybrid H₂Q_j3/Tb based terbium sensibilization coupled excited-state intramolecular proton transfer effects. Using the statistical analysis (PCA and HCA) for sensing signals of three fluorescence channels (431, 543 and 583 nm), we demonstrate this elaborate chemosensor with multianalyte detection of three species (solvents, anions and cations) and pattern discrimination of analogues. As a result, the H₂Q_j3/Tb shows great lab-on-a-molecule characters for each set of species, resulting in the easier identification of many critical analytes (e.g., H₂O, NO₂^- and Fe³⁺) and discrimination of analogues. In addition, it is also proven to be able to provide reliable content determination for an analyte, especially the NO₂^- (LOD = 0.37 μM), and discrimination for mixed analogues. A combination of easy-to-implement preparation procedure and data analysis technique makes this work promising for not only designing similar lanthanide-based materials but also realizing more high-efficient multianalyte sensing systems towards various potential applications.

Highly selective and discriminative detection of small alcohols based on a dual-emission macrocyclic samarium complex

Lower alcohols (C1-C7) have a close relationship with our lives and some of them are harmful to our body's health. For example, liquor mixed with a tiny amount of methanol is harmful to our health. Much of this study is about identifying one or two low-level alcohols. How to detect low-level alcohol and high-throughput and distinguish between analogues of alcohol remains a tremendous challenge. In this study, a new large ring Schiff base Sm(III) complex (Sm-2r) is synthesized with a double emission matrix using the template method. Its dynamic imine bond (CN) and organic ligands (H₂L2_r) with molecular rotor properties can respond to changes in viscosity and polarity in external environments. The PCA method is used to turn the data matrix into a fingerprint spectrum to distinguish different alcohols (C1-C7). Sm-2r enables the quantization of cyclopropyl and glycerol. Linear ranges of cyclopropanol and glycerol are 0-9.0% and 0-3.0% (v/v), respectively. In addition, Sm-2r has an excellent ability to distinguish the mixtures of n-PrOH and i-PrOH, C₅H₉OH and C₆H₁₁OH, n-PeOH and n-HeOH, 1,3-PDO and 1,2-PDO, MeOH and EtOH, 1,2-EG and 1,2-PDO at different volume ratios. We have provided a way to distinguish alcohol species based on their molecular polarity and viscosity.

A facile COF loaded-molybdate resonance Rayleigh scattering and fluorescence dimode probe for determination of trace PO43

A new covalent organic framework loaded-molybdate (COF_Mo) nanomaterial was prepared simply by solvothermal procedure and characterized by electron microscopy and molecular spectral techniques. The COF_Mo had a strong resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) signal at 465 nm and a fluorescence peak at 345 nm. When the PO₄^3- was added in the system, it reacted with the molybdate, which loaded on the surface of COF particles, to form stable phosphomolybdic acid occurring RRS/fluorescence-energy transfer, the RRS and fluorescence signals were decreased. The decreased RRS/fluorescence intensities were linear to the PO₄^3- concentration in the range of 0.053-3.2 nmol/L and 0.10-3.2 nmol/L, with a detection limit of 0.050 nmol/L and 0.090 nmol/L respectively. Accordingly, a new and facile RRS/fluorescence dimode method for detection of trace PO₄^3- was established, only one fluorometer was used.

Construction of a hydroxide responsive C3-symmetric supramolecular gel for controlled release of small molecules

A C3-symmetric acylhydrazone-based low molecular weight gelator (BHTP) bearing three pyridine units was synthesized and it was found to form a stable supramolecular gel in the mixture solvent of DMSO-H2O. The morphology of the gel as observed by FE-SEM showed a dense sheet structure. Hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking between the gelators were determined as the non-covalent interactions for the gelation, which were investigated thoroughly using XRD, UV-Vis, 1H NMR and FT-IR instruments. BHTP could form pH tolerant supramolecular gels in the widest range of pH values from 1 to 11. The DMSO-H2O (v : v = 1 : 1) gel exhibited selective response to OH- over a series of other anions through the color change from a white gel to a yellow solution, and the OH- response mechanism was proved by 1H NMR experiments. In solution, the lowest detection limit of BHTP for OH- was calculated to be as low as 1.62 × 10-7 M via UV-Vis titration experiments. Finally, encapsulation and controlled release of small molecules such as rhodamine B, crystal violet and methyl orange have been successfully carried out, demonstrating the potential for drug delivery application of this C3-symmetric supramolecular gel. This work opens a novel avenue for the preparation of supramolecular gel-based multiple functional smart materials.

Ratiometric fluorescent sensing for phosphate based on Eu/Ce/UiO-66-(COOH)2 nanoprobe

The sensing of phosphate anion (PO₄^3-) is an important subject for human health and environmental monitoring. Herein, a unique ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe based on postsynthetic modification of metal-organic frameworks (MOF) UiO-66-(COOH)₂ with Eu³⁺ and Ce³⁺ ions toward PO₄^3- was proposed (designated as Eu/Ce/Uio-66-(COOH)₂). The Eu/Ce/Uio-66-(COOH)₂ nanoprobe exhibits three emission peaks at 377 nm, 509 nm, and 621 nm with the single excitation wavelength at 250 nm, respectively. The strong coordinating interaction between Ce³⁺ and O atoms in the PO₄^3- group can result in the fluorescence quenching at 377 nm, while the fluorescence of 621 nm almost remains unchanged. Such a useful phenomenon is exploited for the construction of a ratiometric fluorescence platform for the detection of PO₄^3-. The assay exhibited a good linear response in the 0.3-20 μM concentration range with the detection limit of 0.247 μM. In addition, this ratiometric fluorescent sensing method not only can be applied to read out PO₄^3- concentration in real water samples, but also shows higher sensitivity, easier preparation and sensing procedures than other detection strategies.

Green synthesis of fluorescent Schiff bases: chemo-photophysical characterization, X-ray structures, and their bioimaging

Two Schiff bases have been prepared by mechano- and ultrasound-assisted synthesis and their structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction. One of them showed good fluorescent cell staining in vitro and low cytotoxicity.

In situ self-assembled cationic lanthanide metal organic framework membrane sensor for effective MnO4- and ascorbic acid detection

Developing portable membrane sensors to accurately detect the biomolecule ascorbic acid (AA) is extremely important for food safety and human health. Herein, we successfully design and synthesize a novel cationic metal organic framework (Eu-pbmc, Hpbmc = 2-(pyridine-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid) and assemble polyacrylonitrile/Eu-pbmc membrane (PEM) by an in-situ growth strategy. Benefiting from the appreciable loading of Eu-pbmc nanoparticles and high water permeation flux, PEM possesses effective detection for MnO₄^- with a limit of detection (LOD) of 17 nM. Utilizing the cationic porous framework, we load MnO₄^- into PEM and construct a "on-off-on" system for effective AA detection. The oxidative MnO₄^- can be reduced by AA and the resulting turn-on luminescence can reflect the concentration of AA. Compared with pure Eu-pbmc crystals, PEM exhibits improved AA detection performance with LOD of 48 nM and detection time of 1 min via a concise detection operation. The stable membrane sensor realizes an accurate detection in real biological samples, meeting the practical requirement. Moreover, an IMP logic gate is helpful to analyze MnO₄^- and AA in water. The proposed novel luminescence platform as well as reasonable "on-off-on" luminescence mode provide a promising method for AA detection.
