Simultaneous measurement of Cr(III) and Cu(II) based on indicator-displacement assay using a colorimetric nanoprobe

Nanotechnology-based optical sensors for Baijiu quality and safety control

Baijiu quality and safety have received considerable attention owing to the gradual increase in its consumption. However, owing to the unique and complex process of Baijiu production, issues leading to quality and safety concerns may occur during the manufacturing process. Therefore, establishing appropriate analytical methods is necessary for Baijiu quality assurance and process control. Nanomaterial (NM)-based optical sensing techniques have garnered widespread interest because of their unique advantages. However, comprehensive studies on nano-optical sensing technology for quality and safety control of Baijiu are lacking. In this review, we systematically summarize NM-based optical sensor applications for the accurate detection and quantification of analytes closely related to Baijiu quality and safety. Furthermore, we evaluate the sensing mechanisms for each application. Finally, we discuss the challenges nanotechnology poses for Baijiu analysis and future trends. Overall, nanotechnological approaches provide a potentially useful alternative for simplifying Baijiu analysis and improving final product quality and safety.

Tris buffer-accelerated ligand exchange rate for instant fluorescence detection of trivalent chromium ion

Functional nucleic acids (FNAs) have attracted a lot of attention for the rapid detection of metal ions. Cr3+ is one of the major heavy metal ions in natural waters. Due to the slow ligand exchange rate of Cr3+, the FNA-based Cr3+ sensors require long assay times, limiting the on-site applications. In this study, we report that the good's buffers containing amino and polyhydroxy groups greatly increase the ligand exchange rate of Cr3+. Using EDTA as a model coordinate ligand, the Tris buffer (100 mM, pH 7.0) showed the best acceleration effect among the eight buffers. It improved the rate constant ∼20-fold, shorten the half-time 19-fold, and lowered the activation energy ∼70% at 40 °C. The Tris buffer was then applied for sensor based on the Cr3+-binding induced fluorescence quenching of fluorescein (FAM)-labeled and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), which shortened the assay time from 1 h to 1 min. The Tris buffer also ∼100% enhanced the fluorescence intensity of FAM, achieving the 11.4-fold lower limit of detection (LOD = 6.97 nM, S/N = 3). By the combination use of the Tris buffer and ascorbic acid, the strong interference from Cu2+, Pb2+, and Fe3+ suffered in many previous reported Cr3+ sensors was avoided. The practical application of the sensor for the detection of Cr3+ spiked in the real water samples were demonstrated with high recovery percentages. The Tris buffer could be applied for other metal ions with slow ligand exchange rate (such as V2+, Co3+ and Fe2+) to solve diverse issues such as long assay time and low synthesis yield of metal complexes, without the need of heating treatment.

Dual-Channel Fluorescent/Colorimetric-Based OPD-Pd/Pt NFs Sensor for High-Sensitivity Detection of Silver Ions

Silver ions (Ag+) exist widely in various areas of human life, and the food contamination caused by them poses a serious threat to human health. Among the numerous methods used for the detection of Ag+, fluorescence and colorimetric analysis have attracted much attention due to their inherent advantages, such as high sensitivity, simple operation, short time, low cost and visualized detection. In this work, Pd/Pt nanoflowers (NFs) specifically responsive to Ag+ were synthesized in a simple way to oxidize o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). The interaction of Ag+ with the surface of Pd/Pt NFs inhibits the catalytic activity of Pd/Pt NFs towards the substrate OPD. A novel dual-channel nanosensor was constructed for the detection of Ag+, using the fluorescence intensity and UV-vis absorption intensity of DAP as output signals. This dual-mode analysis combines their respective advantages to significantly improve the sensitivity and accuracy of Ag+ detection. The results showed that the limit of detection was 5.8 nM for the fluorescence channel and 46.9 nM for the colorimetric channel, respectively. Moreover, the developed platform has been successfully used for the detection of Ag+ in real samples with satisfactory recoveries, which is promising for the application in the point-of-care testing of Ag+ in the field of food safety.

Synthesis of N,Si co-doped carbon dots to establish a fluorescent sensor for Hg(II) detection with triple signal output

Mercury is a heavy metal with extreme toxicity. Thus, it is of significance to develop an effective method for mercury ion detection with high performance. In this study, carbon dots doped with nitrogen and silicon (N,Si/CQDs) were successfully prepared from folic acid and N-[3-(trimethoxysily)propyl]-ethylenediamine. The N,Si/CQDs show an obvious cyan fluorescence of 460 nm with the radiation of 350 nm. The existence of mercury ions induces the fluorescence quenching of N,Si/CQDs due to photoinduced electron transfer, which was applied for the sensitive sensing of Hg(II). More importantly, the practical application of the N,Si/CQD probe was confirmed by measurements of Hg(II) in real samples of lake water, sorghum and rice. In addition, the N,Si/CQD nanoprobe was integrated on a sensing strip for specific detection of Hg(II). Quantitative measurement of Hg(II) was realized by the outstanding linearity between the diameter (or fluorescence intensity) of the fluorescence quenching ring and the concentration of mercury ions. The sensor shows potential for rapid detection with a triple signal readout on-site and represents a larger step towards practical applications.

Colorimetric detection of Cu2+ based on the inhibition strategy for etching reaction of AgNCs

In this study, an efficient and simple colorimetric method for sensing of Cu²⁺ was established using inhibition effect of Cu²⁺ to the etching reaction of silver nanocubes (AgNCs) induced by H₂O₂. The etching reaction of AgNCs changes its morphology and absorbance with the visual appearance from yellow to colorless. On the contrary, the presence of Cu²⁺ can significantly inhibit the etching progress. Thus Cu²⁺ induces the obvious absorbance enhancement compared with AgNCs/H₂O₂ system. This design realizes colorimetric detection of Cu²⁺ based on the inhibition effect of etching reaction using AgNCs nanoprobe. The colorimetric response of AgNCs nanoprobe in ΔAbs_417.5 shows the linearity with the increasing concentrations of Cu²⁺ from 0.01 to 40 μM with good selectivity. The concentration limit of Cu²⁺ efficaciously discriminated by the naked eye is as low as 0.01 μM. Furthermore, the Euclidean distance (ED) of the difference map in RGB change before and after response with Cu²⁺ is applied for further visualization recognition of Cu²⁺. All the above results indicate the outstanding practicability and accuracy of the proposed assay for Cu²⁺ sensing.

A paper-based visualization chip based on nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots nanoprobe for Hg(Ⅱ) detection

Hg(II) is one of the most toxic heavy metal ions. The bioconcentration and degradation-resistant of Hg(II) bring about serious harm to the ecosystem and humans. Therefore, the establishment of an accurate and effective method for detecting mercury ions is of great significance to environmental protection, food safety and human health. In this work, a new fluorescent nanoprobe was presented using nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) for Hg(II) sensing with high stability and selectivity. On this basis, a paper-based chip was innovatively developed for visualization detection of Hg(II). The N-CQDs were prepared through a one-step hydrothermal reaction using catechol and ethylenediamine as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. As-prepared N-CQDs exhibit the strong green fluorescence at the excitation/emission wavelength of 370/511 nm. In aqueous solution, a rapid and highly sensitive detection method of Hg(II) was established by the joint of dynamic and static quenching effect of Hg(II) on N-CQDs fluorescence. Under the optimized conditions, there was a stable correlation between the fluorescence intensity change of N-CQDs and the concentrations of Hg(II) in the range of 15 ∼ 10⁴ nM, and the detection limit was down to 8 nM (S/N = 3). The recoveries of water, sorghum and rice were 91.60 to 102.46%, which was consistent with ICP-MS. More importantly, the N-CQDs nanoprobe was further integrated in nitrocellulose membrane to develop paper-based chip for Hg(II) visualization detection, and the detection performance was also excellent. This strategy had significant implications for achieving low-cost, on-site real-time monitoring of mercury (II) in the environment and food.

Sequential injection method for bi-parametric determination of iron and manganese in soil leachates

The aim of this work was to develop a sequential injection (SI) method for the determination of the micronutrients iron and manganese, in soil leachates, as a tool to assess potential groundwater contamination. The described sequential injection method was based on the reaction of iron with chelator MRB12, a greener alternative chromogenic reagent, and the reaction of manganese with zincon, within a single manifold. The developed SI method enabled the determination of iron in the range 0.10-1.00 mg L^-1, and manganese in the range 0.25-2.5 mg L^-1 with a limit of detection of 0.08 mg L^-1 for iron and 0.24 mg L^-1 for manganese. The determination of both parameters was made in 6 minutes, in triplicate. The application to monitor laboratory scale soil core columns (LSSCs), as a simulation of the soil leaching process, proved its efficiency to assess potential contamination of ground waters. Iron and manganese contents were effectively analysed in two different scenarios to mimic the leaching process with rainwater and fertilizer.

Indicator displacement assays: from concept to recent developments

Overcoming the synthetic burden related to covalently connected receptors with appropriate indicators for sensing various analytes via an indicator spacer receptor (ISR) approach, the indicator displacement assay (IDA) seems to be a very sophisticated and versatile supramolecular sensing paradigm, and it has taken the phenomenon of molecular recognition to the next level in the realm of host-guest chemistry. Due to the unavailability of a comprehensive report on what has been done in the last decade in relation to IDAs, we decided to set down this account illustrating diverse indicator displacement assays (IDAs) in detail from the concept stage to recent developments relating to the detection of cationic, anionic, and neutral analytes. The authors conclude this account with future perspectives and highlight the limitations and challenges relating to IDAs which need to be overcome in order to realize the full potential of this popular sensing phenomenon. While we were finalizing our account for publication, a tutorial review by the research groups of Anslyn, Sessler, and Sun was published, which focuses mainly on diverse aspects of the chemistry related to IDAs. As can be seen, our review, besides discussing various basic IDA concepts, has a vast collection of information published in the past decade and hence, hopefully, will be very informative for the supramolecular community. We believe that this work will offer new insights for the construction of novel sensors operating through the IDA approach.
