Naked eye detection of moisture in organic solvents and development of alginate polymer beads and test cassettes as a portable kit

A tert-Butyldiphenylsilyl-Containing Polyimide-Based Chemosensor for Sequential Detection of Fluoride Ions and Trace Water in Organic Solvents

A tert-butyldiphenylsilyl-containing polyimide (PI-OSi) has been established as a colorimetric and ratiometric chemosensor for rapid detecting fluoride ions (F-). The UV-vis absorbance ratio value (A322/A288) of PI-OSi in a DMF solution displays a wide linear range change to F- concentrations with a detection limit (DL) value of 2.13 μM. Additionally, adding incremental amounts of F- to a DMF solution of PI-OSi shows an immediate color change to yellow and finally to green from colorless. More interestingly, the resulting PI-OSi plus F- system (PI-OSi·F) could detect trace water in DMF. The A292/A322 value of PI-OSi·F almost linearly increases with low water content, which suggests convenient quantitative sensing of trace water content in DMF. The DL value of PI-OSi·F for sensing water in DMF is determined to be 0.00149% (v/v). The solution color of PI-OSi·F returns to colorless when the water content increases, indicating that PI-OSi·F can conveniently estimate water content in DMF by naked-eye detection. The detection mechanisms confirmed by an 1H NMR study and a DFT calculation involve a F--induced desilylation reaction of PI-OSi to form phenolate anion followed by protonation with trace water. Finally, PI-OSi film was fabricated for the colorimetric detection of F- and water in CH3CN.

Investigating the AIE and water sensing properties of a concise naphthalimide fluorophore

A simple naphthalimide fluorophore NAP-H₂O was designed and synthesized. Basic photophysical properties were investigated, especially found that the probe showed robust green fluorescence in water compared with that in various organic solvents, and the specific mechanism was conformed to be the aggregation induced emission (AIE) through dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, solid-state luminescence and fluorescence imaging. Accordingly, the capability of NAP-H₂O for water sensing was examined, and good linear relationships between fluorescence intensities at the green emission band and the water content were obtained, enabling quantitative detection of water in organic solvents. The detection limits were calculated to be 0.004 % (v/v) in ACN, 0.117 % (v/v) in 1,4-dioxane, 0.028 % (v/v) in THF, 0.022 % (v/v) in DMF and 0.146 % (v/v) in DMSO, respectively. In addition, the probe presented fast response time within 5 s to water and good photostability. Furthermore, the probe was successfully applied for fast and naked-eye detection of water in organic solvents via test papers. This work provides a rapid, sensitive and naked-eye method for trace amount detection of water in organic solvents and has potential for practical applications.

On-site screening method for bioavailability assessment of the organophosphorus pesticide, methyl parathion, and its primary metabolite in soils by paper strip biosensor

An important public concern worldwide is soil pollution caused by organophosphorus pesticides and their primary metabolites. To protect the public's health, screening these pollutants on-site and determining their soil bioavailability is important, but doing so is still challenging. This work improved the already-existing organophosphorus pesticide hydrolase (mpd) and transcriptional activator (pobR), and it first designed and constructed a novel biosensor (Escherichia coli BL21/pNP-LacZ) that can precisely detect methyl parathion (MP) and its primary metabolite p-nitrophenol with low background value. To create a paper strip biosensor, E. coli BL21/pNP-LacZ was fixed to filter paper using bio-gel alginate and sensitizer polymyxin B. According to the calibrations of the paper strip biosensor for soil extracts and standard curve, the color intensity of the paper strip biosensor collected by the mobile app may be used to compute the concentration of MP and p-nitrophenol. This method's detection limits were 5.41 µg/kg for p-nitrophenol and 9.57 µg/kg for MP. The detection of p-nitrophenol and MP in laboratory and field soil samples confirmed this procedure. Paper strip biosensor on-site allows for the semi-quantitative measurement of p-nitrophenol and MP levels in soils in a simple, inexpensive, and portable method.

A chromo-fluorogenic probe for detecting water traces in aprotic solvents based on C2-symmetry dianthrimide-hydroxide complexes: experimental and theoretical studies

A C₂-symmetry dianthrimide based probe (D) and its hydroxide complex (D-OH) are reported as a chromo-fluorogenic sensor for rapid and sensitive detection of trace amounts of water in polar aprotic solvents. Based on intramolecular charge transfer in the excited state, the pink-coloured probe binds with the hydroxide ions to induce a colorimetric response of the resulting complex (D-OH), green in colour. The hydroxide based complex is used as a H₂O or moisture sensor, tested in DMF and DCM, due to its high instability in moisture-containing organic solvents and paper materials/fabrics. The probe exhibits higher sensitivity towards pure H₂O in DMSO with the LOD measured at 0.0067% v/v, perhaps even lower, in DMF (LOD = 0.100% v/v) and DCM (LOD = 0.013% v/v). The dissociation of OH^- from D in the presence of H₂O is responsible for the colorimetric and fluorometric responses. The litmus test paper strips prepared by adsorbing or coating them with the D-OH complex in DMSO could not be entirely achieved in an open system, due to the highly unstable state of the complex in the presence of water traces or the atmospheric moisture accumulated in the paper materials. The complex D-OH is also highly suspected to compete for adsorbed water in silica gel crystals in desiccators, due to its high affinity towards water molecules. The experimental studies were complemented by theoretical calculations using the Spartan'14 software package, and the computed data are in good agreement with the spectral data.
