Effect of aspect ratio on the chirality of gold nanorods prepared through conventional seed-mediated growth method

Combined Facile Synthesis, Purification, and Surface Functionalization Approach Yields Monodispersed Gold Nanorods for Drug Delivery Applications

Synthesizing gold nanorods (AuNRs) by seed-mediated growth method results in the presence of undesired size and shape particles by-products occupying 10-90% of the population. In this study, AuNRs are synthesized by the seed-mediated growth method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant. AuNRs with redshifted longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LLSPR) peak, localized in the biological "transparency window" (650-1350 nm), are synthesized after optimizing seed solution, silver nitrate solution, and hydrochloric acid solution volumes, based on the published protocols. A two-step purification method, dialysis followed by centrifugation, is applied to remove excess CTAB and collect LLSPR-redshifted AuNRs with high rod purity (>90%). CTAB is subsequently exchanged with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to improve AuNRs biocompatibility. PEGylated AuNRs are confirmed innocuous to both SN4741 cells and B16F10 cells by the modified MTT assay and the modified lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay up to 1 nm and 24 h incubation. In this study, a combined facile synthesis, purification, and surface functionalization approach is proposed to obtain water-dispersible monodispersed AuNRs for drug delivery applications.

Rhombic dodecahedral gold nanoparticles: chiral sensing probes for naked-eye recognition of histidine enantiomers

Rhombic dodecahedral gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are found to have inherent chirality and can be used as colorimetric probes for naked-eye recognition of histidine enantiomers. Our findings are helpful for developing new GNP-based chiral sensing systems through tuning of nanoparticle morphology.

Recent developments in the chiroptical properties of chiral plasmonic gold nanostructures: bioanalytical applications

The presence of excess L-amino acid in the Murchison meteorite, circular polarization effect in the genesis of stars and existence of chirality in interstellar molecules contribute to the origin of life on earth. Chiral-sensitive techniques have been employed to untangle the secret of the symmetries of the universe, designing of effective secure drugs and investigation of chiral biomolecules. The relationship between light and chiral molecules was employed to probe and explore such molecules using spectroscopy techniques. The mutual interaction between electromagnetic spectrum and chirality of matter give rise to distinct optical response, which advances vital information contents in chiroptical spectroscopy. Chiral plasmonic gold nanoparticle exhibits distinctive circular dichroism peaks in broad wavelength range thereby crossing the limits of its characterization. The emergence of strong optical activity of gold nanosystem is related to its high polarizability, resulting in plasmonic and excitonic effects on incident photons. Inspired by the development of advanced chiral plasmonic nanomaterials and exploring its properties, this review gives an overview of various chiral gold nanostructures and the mechanism behind its chiroptical properties. Finally, we highlight the application of different chiral gold nanomaterials in the field of catalysis and medical applications with special emphasis to biosensing and biodetection.

L-cysteine capped silver nanoparticles as chiral recognition sensor for ketoprofen enantiomers

A simple, inexpensive but effective approach for visual chiral recognition of ketoprofen enantiomers was developed using L-cysteine capped silver nanoparticles (L-Cys-AgNPs) as a colorimetric sensor. Upon the addition of R-ketoprofen to L-Cys-AgNPs, rapid aggregation occurred, and the solution changed color from yellow to green. However, the presence of S-ketoprofen did not induce any color change. The results were characterized using UV-Vis, FESEM, FT-IR, SERS, and zeta potential measurements. The chiral assay described in this work is easily distinguished with the naked eyes or using a UV-Vis spectrometer. The sensor revealed a good linear response to ketoprofen enantiomers in the concentration range of 8.33-33.3 μM with a detection limit of 4.52 μM and relative standard deviation of 3.73%. The proposed method was utilized for the determination of ketoprofen racemic mixtures in water samples and commercial tablets. The method excels by its simplicity, low cost, and good availability of materials.
