Abstract
With the rapid development of fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs), such as CDs, QDs, and MOFs, the construction of FNP-based probes has played a key role in improving chemical sensors. Ratiometric fluorescent probes exhibit distinct advantages, such as resistance to environmental interference and achieving visualization. Thus, FNP-based dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent probes (DRFPs) have rapidly developed in the field of metal ion and small molecule detection in the past few years. In this review, firstly we introduce the fluorescence sensing mechanisms; then, we focus on the strategies for the fabrication of DRFPs, including hybrid FNPs, single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission and target-induced new emission, and DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles. In the section on hybrid FNPs, methods to assemble two types of FNPs, such as chemical bonding, electrostatic interaction, core satellite or core-shell structures, coordination, and encapsulation, are introduced. In the section on single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission, methods for the design of dual-emission CDs, QDs, and MOFs are discussed. Regarding target-induced new emission, sensitization, coordination, hydrogen bonding, and chemical reaction induced new emissions are discussed. Furthermore, in the section on DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles, auxiliary nanomaterials with the inner filter effect and enzyme mimicking activity are discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and an outlook on the future of DRFP are presented. We sincerely hope that this review will contribute to the quick understanding and exploration of DRFPs by researchers.

Abstract
We report delayed fluorescence enhancement of europium (Eu3+) ions through complexation with ligand-stabilized gold nanoclusters (Au NCs). The different Eu3+-centric emissions following complexation with Au NCs exhibited selective augmentation in the spectral lines attributed to the 5D0 → 7FJ transitions. The photoluminescence (PL) properties, including delayed Eu emission, from each component could be modulated through further functionalization of phosphate ions (Pi), leading to crystallization. The assembled crystalline structure of europium-containing Au NCs (Eu Au NCs) was corroborated by selected area electron diffraction analyses and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses. On the basis of PL measurements and other experimental evidence, the two different lifetimes arising from the components, prompt emission of Au NCs and delayed emission of Eu3+, were affected in the assembled nanostructure. Such a design offers the possibility of developing an optical system by conjugating molecular NCs and atomic luminescent probes that has potential uses.

Abstract
In this article, the water-soluble blue-light-emitting copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) were prepared by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and ascorbic acid as templating and reducing agents, respectively. The optimization of synthesis conditions of PVP-CuNCs were studied and analyzed. And the quantum yield of the PVP-CuNCs was calculated to be 14.97%. It had good specificity and exceptionally sensitive detection for sodium dichloroisocyanurate (DCCNa)/rosmarinic acid (RA), with a linear response range of 0.030-2.400/0.030-0.900 μM and corresponding LOD value of 10.766/8.985 nM. Moreover, the fluorescent reaction mechanisms of the PVP-CuNCs-DCCNa and PVP-CuNCs-DCCNa-RA systems were discussed, and the sensing probe could be effectively used for the assays of DCCNa and RA in genuine samples, whose results were acceptable.

Abstract
Dual-state emitters (DSEs) are entities that exhibit fluorescence in both the solution and solid state, which open up a wide range of possibilities for their utilization in various fields. The development of detection platforms using intrinsic luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) is highly desirable for a variety of applications. DSE MOFs as a subclass of intrinsic LMOFs are highly attractive due to no need for encapsulation/functionalization by fluorophores and/or using luminescent linkers. Herein, a highly stable intrinsic dual-state blue emission (λem = 425 nm) zinc-based MOF with rodlike nanostructures (denoted as UoZ-2) was synthesized and characterized. To the best of our knowledge, intrinsic DSE of Zn-MOFs with blue emission in the dispersed form in solution and solid-state fluorescence have not been reported yet. When tetracycline (TC) was added, a continuous color evolution from blue to greenish-yellow with dramatic enhancement was observed due to aggregation induced emission (AIE). Thus, a sensitive ratiometry-based visual detection platform, in solution and on paper independently, was designed for detection of TC exploiting the DSE and AIE properties of UoZ-2 alone and UoZ-2:TC. The detection limit was estimated to be 4.5 nM, which is considered to be one of the most sensitive ratiometric fluorescent probes for TC sensing. The ratiometry paper-based UoZ-2 sensor displays a reliable TC quantitative analysis by recognizing RGB values in the on-site TC detection with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract
In this work, a ratiometric fluorometric sensor based on nickel nanoclusters (NiNCs)-europium complex (NiNCs-Eu3+) was constructed for the highly selectivity detection of tetracyclines (TCs) in water samples. In the presence of TCs, the blue fluorescence of the sensor NiNCs-Eu3+ was quenched at 430 nm and the characteristic red fluorescence of Eu3+-TCs appeared at 620 nm because of the combined help of inner filter effect (IFE) and antenna effect. Under the optimized conditions (100 mM Eu3+ (100 µL); temperature (25℃); reaction time (10 min), HEPES buffer solution (pH = 7.0)), the sensor offered a wide detection range of tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) from 0.1 to 50 μM with the detection limit (LOD) of 25 nM and 21 nM, respectively. Moreover, the sensor was able to detect of TC and OTC in tap and lake water with high recovery rate (89.10%-97.60%). In addition, the portable paper-based sensor was constructed using filter paper embedded with NiNCs-Eu3+. The distinct fluorescent color of the paper-based sensor varied from bright blue to red against different concentrations of TC and OTC. These above findings demonstrated the potential for wide application of as-prepared ratio metric fluorescence sensor for visual detection of TCs in water samples.

Abstract
Development of accurate and efficient TCs residue analysis methods is of great significance for the protection of environment, food safety and public health. Herein, a dual-responsive ratiometric fluorescence sensor being capable of simple and sensitive detection of tetracycline (TC) was presented, which was constructed by immobilizing europium ions (Eu3+) onto the mercaptopropionic acid stabilized copper nanoclusters (MPA-Cu NCs). In the presence of TC, the red fluorescence of Eu3+ was enhanced through antenna effect (AE), while the green fluorescence of MPA-Cu NCs was quenched through internal filter effect (IFE), leading to an obvious fluorescence color evolution from green to red for the probe solution. In addition to successful design of a smartphone-assisted colorimetric analysis platform for portable detection, a logic gate device capable of intelligently monitoring TC concentration is also designed.

Abstract
The controllable design of red-emitting carbon dots and further exploration of their application in the trace determination of environmental pollutants remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, the novel strategy for red fluorescent carbon dots (R-CDs) with a higher quantum yield of 58.9% was proposed by doping small-molecule urea into the bio-dye of resazurin for the first time, which can retain the luminophore of precursors and exhibit exceptional optical, advantageous reversibility and outstanding photostability. Importantly, the R-CDs exhibit a remarkable fluorescence reduction towards tetracyclines (TCs) accompanied by a noticeable color change of R-CDs solution from red to yellow, which can realize the trace detection of TCs at strelatively low levels, including tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline (CTC). The linear range of TC, CTC, and OTC are 3-40 μM, 4-50 μM, and 2-50 μM, and the corresponding detection limits are 38.5 nM, 64.6 nM, and 45.4 nM, respectively (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the R-CDs demonstrate sensitivity to the physiological pH in the linear range of 4.0-5.0 and 5.0-6.2 with a pKa of 5.61. As a multifunctional fluorescent sensor, R-CDs can provide a new perspective for the preparation of long-wavelength CDs, and further realize the trace determination of environmental pollutants.

Abstract
The growing appearance of antibiotic-resistant strains of microorganisms originated from the widespread use and ubiquitous presence of such drugs is a major concern in the world. The development of methodologies able to detect such substances at low concentration in real water samples is mandatory to overcome this problem. Europium(III) is known to form complexes with tetracycline (TC) with photoluminescent characteristics useful for TC determination. In the present work, we synthesized for the first time carbon nanoparticles (CN) showing delayed photoluminescence using a Europium(III) doping synthesis. The new material (PCNEu) was characterized both morphologically and spectroscopically, showing an analytical photoluminescent signal in presence of TC, arising from the 5D0→7F2 transition of europium, one hundred times higher than that of the europium salt alone in presence of the antibiotic. This enhancement is a consequence of the amplifying effect exerted by nanoparticle structure itself, leading to an efficient synergistic "antenna effect" in the system PCNEu - TC. The analytical signal is affected both by pH and the nature of the buffer used, and it allows the detection of tetracycline in waters with a limit of detection of 2.18 nM and recoveries between 90 and 110%. The analytical performance of the developed methodology enables having lower limits of detection than other luminescent and chemiluminescent reported methodologies.

Abstract
Nowadays, foodborne pathogens and other food contaminants are among the major contributors to human illnesses and even deaths worldwide. There is a growing need for improvements in food safety globally. However, it is a challenge to detect and identify these harmful analytes in a rapid, sensitive, portable, and user-friendly manner. Recently, researchers have paid attention to the development of paper-based electrochemical biosensors due to their features and promising potential for food safety analysis. The use of paper in electrochemical biosensors offers several advantages such as device miniaturization, low sample consumption, inexpensive mass production, capillary force-driven fluid flow, and capability to store reagents within the pores of the paper substrate. Various paper-based electrochemical biosensors have been developed to enable the detection of foodborne pathogens and other contaminants that pose health hazards to humans. In this review, we discussed several aspects of the biosensors including different device designs (e.g., 2D and 3D devices), fabrication techniques, and electrode modification approaches that are often optimized to generate measurable signals for sensitive detection of analytes. The utilization of different nanomaterials for the modification of electrode surface to improve the detection of analytes via enzyme-, antigen/antibody-, DNA-, aptamer-, and cell-based bioassays is also described. Next, we discussed the current applications of the sensors to detect food contaminants such as foodborne pathogens, pesticides, veterinary drug residues, allergens, and heavy metals. Most of the electrochemical paper analytical devices (e-PADs) reviewed are small and portable, and therefore are suitable for field applications. Lastly, e-PADs are an excellent platform for food safety analysis owing to their user-friendliness, low cost, sensitivity, and a high potential for customization to meet certain analytical needs.

Abstract
8-Hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate (HPTS) is a small, hydrophilic fluorescent molecule. Since the pKa of the hydroxyl group is close to neutrality and quickly responds to pH changes, it is widely used as a pH-reporter in cell biology for measurements of intracellular pH. HPTS fluorescence (both excitation and emission spectra) at variable pH was measured in pure water in the presence of NaCl solution or in the presence of different buffers (PBS or hepes in the presence or not of NaCl) and in a solution containing BSA. pKa values have been obtained from the sigmoidal curves. Herein, we investigated the effect of mono-, di-, and trivalent cations (Na+, Ca2+, La3+, Gd3+) on fluorescence changes and proposed its use for the quantification of trivalent cations (e.g., gadolinium ions) present in solution as acqua-ions. Starting from the linear regression, the LoD value of 6.32 µM for the Gd3+ detection was calculated. The effects on the emission were also analyzed in the presence of a combination of Gd3+ at two different concentrations and the previously indicated mono and di-valent ions. The study demonstrated the feasibility of a qualitative method to investigate the intracellular Gd3+ release upon the administration of Gd-based contrast agents in murine macrophages.
