Diagnostic Radiology Resident Recruitment Part I: Advice to Programs (and Program Directors) From Vice Chairs for Education

Resident Wellness in Radiology as Portrayed by Departmental Websites

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

Departmental websites are often the first exposure applicants have in researching programs. Websites provide information about resident education as well as infrastructure for resident wellness. For this study, we reviewed residency websites to evaluate resident wellness initiatives and extent of details available online.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Program websites for diagnostic radiology residencies listed in the 2020 ERAS program list were evaluated for 26 criteria pertaining to resident wellness. Criteria which are not radiology resident specific were also evaluated on their graduate medical education (GME) websites if unavailable on the departmental website.

RESULTS

Of 189 programs, 185 (97.9%) had functioning websites for review. Book funds were mentioned by 57% (mean $3,762), and 43.5% discussed housing stipends during AIRP (mean $2,204); neither significantly correlated with program size. Retirement plan matching was present for 47.8% of programs. Almost all programs utilized night float call schedules, with relatively similar distribution of residents starting on-call duties as fall PGY2s, spring PGY2s, and starting PGY3s. Moonlighting was mentioned by 22.8% of departments. Paid wellness days were discussed in 10.8% (mean 3.1 days/year), and 37.7% described paid parental leave (mean 27.8 days/year). Less than 10% described resident mentoring, wellness committees, or non-clinical curricula. Resident retreats were mentioned by 21.6% of programs, and 11.4% described regular social activities; both were found more frequently at larger programs (chi-square analysis, p <0.00625).

CONCLUSION

This study evaluated radiology residency program and GME websites for information pertaining to resident wellness. While financial and clinical information was typically present for >50% of programs, information regarding social initiatives was generally lacking and may be one area to bolster resident wellness and describe on websites.

Vice Chair for Education: Twelve Roles to Provide a Framework for Success

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

An increase in the administrative work in our healthcare system has led to an increase in the number of administrative positions in radiology departments. Many of these are Vice Chair roles, including Vice Chair for Education (VCEd). The responsibility of this position has expanded, often far beyond the original definition. This article defines the role and expectations of the Vice Chair for Education and provides suggestions for success.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This article will review 12 vital roles that a Vice Chair for Education must play to be an effective advocate for radiology education within a department.

RESULTS

Key attributes of an educational leader are delineated, divided into 12 areas or roles.

CONCLUSION

This article summarizes key leadership skills needed by Vice Chairs for Education in order for them to be effective in their role.

Results of the 2019 Survey of the American Alliance of Academic Chief Residents in Radiology

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

An annual survey of chief residents in accredited North American radiology programs is conducted by the American Alliance of Academic Chief Residents in Radiology (A³CR²). The purpose of this study is to summarize the 2019 A³CR² chief resident survey.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An online survey was distributed to chief residents from 194 Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education-accredited radiology residencies. Questions were designed to gather information about residency program details, call and weekend coverage, interventional radiology training, fellowship, social media use, healthcare reform, artificial intelligence, and job market status.

RESULTS

One hundred and forty-two unique responses from 99 programs were provided, yielding a 51% program response rate. There was a mean of 7.3 women per residency with a mean program size of 28 residents (26% women). Only 3 of the 99 (3%) programs had a proportion of women that was 50% or higher. The proportion of women in radiology residencies is unchanged since 2014 (p= 0.93) and is significantly lower than 2019 graduating women medical students (49.3%; p < 0.001). Thirty-five percent of programs had 24/7 attending coverage and 40% of programs had extended hours attending shifts. Of programs without 24/7 attending coverage, the proportion of programs without face-to-face readout has increased from 34% in 2014 to 55% in 2019 (p = 0.015). The majority (67%) of respondents had no concerns about the radiology job market; compared to 2014, where only 4% had no concerns (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Women remain underrepresented in radiology, face-to-face readout is decreasing, and there has been a shift towards a positive job market outlook.

Online Hide and Seek: Allopathic US Medical Schools' Radiology Education Virtual Presence

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

To highlight radiology's merits and boost appeal to medical students in the digital era, it is increasingly important for radiology departments to be readily accessible to medical students. We report the results of a multivariate analysis of the virtual presence of radiology medical student education of 152 allopathic United States (US) medical schools, the first report of its kind to the authors' knowledge. We detail eight elements to include when optimizing a radiology medical student education website.

METHODS

In August 2020, the Department of Radiology websites at 152 allopathic US medical schools were assessed for the presence of a medical student radiology education website and accessibility of collated information about preclinical and clinical course offerings, radiology interest groups, and outreach initiatives in the form of student radiology mentorship, shadowing, and research opportunities.

RESULTS

65.1% (99/152) of allopathic US medical schools' radiology departments have a dedicated medical student radiology education website, one of which was excluded from further review due to password protected content. 58.2% (57/98) of departmental websites include information about preclinical radiology coursework and 90.8% (89/98) of departments provide information about clinical courses. Details about interest groups were found on 26.5% (26/98) of departmental websites. Information about mentorship and shadowing was identified on less than half of departmental websites. 51% (50/98) of Department of Radiology websites provide information about research opportunities for students.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrates that the majority of allopathic US medical schools' radiology departments lack full information of relevance to medical students. To engage today's and tomorrow's medical learners digitally, there is opportunity and need to improve the online availability of information about preclinical and clinical radiology courses, student interest groups, shadowing opportunities, student mentorship, and student research. We detail eight elements to include when optimizing a radiology medical student education website. In most instances, this can be accomplished by revising an existing radiology department website in a manner that engages, educates, and recruits medical students. As a specialty, radiology must expand our digital footprint to reach tomorrow's colleagues and leaders.
