Bereavement dyadic coping questionnaire: Development and validation

Most theories and empirical studies of bereavement coping focus on the individual, although researchers have highlighted the importance of family-level coping and proposed the concept of bereavement dyadic coping (BDC). We developed and validated a 25-item Bereavement Dyadic Coping Questionnaire (BDCQ). The procedure includes item generation, expert review, and examination of the psychometric properties in 241 bereaved persons in bereaved families from China. Factor analysis revealed four factors: direct loss-oriented, indirect loss-oriented, restoration-oriented, and collaborative. The questionnaire had satisfactory internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent and divergent validity. The BDCQ is the first of its kind to measure dyadic coping in the context of bereavement, permitting future quantitative explorations of bereavement dyadic coping and its influence on bereaved individuals and families.

The effect of workload on nurses' quality of life with moderating perceived social support during the COVID-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Iran, the number of patients admitted to hospitals and the workload of nurses has increased. High workload can reduce efficiency and quality of life. In the meantime the percived social support may had a moderating role.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of workload and perceived social support on quality of life in nurses who work in COVID-19 inpatient wards.

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study. 336 nurses who worked in inpatient wards with COVID-19 patients were randomly selected and studied. NASA-TLX Workload Questionnaire, WHO Quality of Life Questionnaire and Multidimensional Social Support Perception Scale were used to data collection. Structural equation modelling in PLS software was used to modelling.

RESULTS

The results showed that the average score of workload, perceived social support and quality of life were 80.87±20.17, 56.23±11.46 and 55.87±13.74, respectively. A significant inverse relationship was observed between workload and quality of life (P < 0.05). Also, perceived social support had a moderator effect on relationship between workload and quality of life (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

High workload can upset the balance between work and life that leads to decrease the quality of life. Perceived social support as a moderator can reduce the negative impact of workload on quality of life. In the COVID-19 pandemic where nurses' workload have increased, by increasing the perceived social support can manage the negative effect of workload.

Different Effects of Social Support on Adolescent Smoking and the Mediation by Smartphone Dependence

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

This study examines the relationship between social support (from parents and peers) and cigarette use, through the mediating effect of smartphone dependence, among adolescents.

STUDY DESIGN

Prospective cohort study.

METHODS

A survey, conducted among 472 adolescents (average age = 16.2 years) attending classes in 3 schools in Lille, France, provides the data. The theoretical model features social support (parental and peer) and cigarette use, with smartphone dependence as a mediator, such that the authors simultaneously examine direct (support → cigarette use) and indirect (eg, peer support → smartphone dependence → cigarette use) paths.

RESULTS

The results illustrate that both parental support and peer support discourage cigarette use, but the indirect effect through smartphone dependence is positive. That is, smartphone dependence mediates the relationship between peer support and cigarette use. Parental support and peer support shape adolescents' cigarette use and smartphone dependence differently, depending on the adolescents' gender.

CONCLUSIONS

Policy makers should acknowledge the positive effects of social support, the negative effect of smartphone dependence, and the importance of gender when developing anti-smoking policies and campaigns.

Age and Social Support Seeking: Understanding the Role of Perceived Social Costs to Others

We examined age differences in the use of different types of social support and the reasons for these differences. We found that older adults (age 60+) seek explicit social support less compared with young adults (age 18-25), but there is no difference in implicit social support seeking. Concerns about the potential social costs of seeking explicit support mediate the age differences in explicit social support seeking. Whereas young adults view this strategy as conferring more benefits than costs, older adults have a more balanced view of the costs and benefits of explicit social support seeking. Older and young adults do not differ in perceptions of the relative costs versus benefits of implicit social support seeking. Finally, we found older adults benefit more from implicit (vs. explicit) social support emotionally than young adults, which further explains why age groups differ in their use of explicit versus implicit social support.
