Numerical analysis of the effects of air on light distribution in a bubble column photobioreactor

Irradiance penetration distribution and flashing light frequency simultaneously affected with microalgal cell absorption and CO2 bubble scattering in a raceway pond

In order to investigate light penetration and flashing light frequency for microalgal cell-CO₂ bubble culture system in a raceway pond, user-defined function for CO₂ mass transfer and bubble scattering models coupled with discrete ordinates radiation model were adopted to clarify simultaneous effects of microalgal cell absorption and CO₂ bubble scattering. Light intensity along the microalgal suspension depth attenuated more rapidly with increased biomass concentration, decreased bubble generation diameter, increased CO₂ gas content and incident light intensity. Ratio of light zone decreased from 81.13 % to 20.00 % when biomass concentration increased from 0 to 0.4 g/L because of light absorption and shading effects of microalgae. When bubble generation diameter increased from 0.1 to 1.6 mm, ratio of light zone increased from 37.95 % to 42.64 %, while microalgal flashing light cycle first decreased to a valley of 1.81 s at 0.8 mm and then increased. Local light intensity in the upper layers was more enhanced due to lots of CO₂ bubbles gathering and reflecting more light with decreased bubble diameter and increased gas content. Light attenuated more rapidly in microalgal suspension with decreased bubble generation diameter and increased CO₂ gas content because of increased bubble diffraction coefficient and contact area. When initial CO₂ volume fraction increased from 0.02 to 0.2, flashing light frequency of microalgal cells decreased from 0.55 to 0.29 Hz and light zone time ratio φ decreased from 36.90 % to 18.40 %. At a biomass concentration of 0.1 g/L and a bubble flow rate of 0.1 m/s, the maximum light penetration and microalgal growth rate was achieved when bubble diameter, incident light intensity and gas content were optimally at 0.8 mm, 200 W/m² and 0.02, respectively. This work provides data support and theoretical guidance for photobioreactor design and optimization of light energy utilization.

Modeling and Simulation of Photobioreactors with Computational Fluid Dynamics—A Comprehensive Review

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) have been frequently applied to model the growth conditions in photobioreactors, which are affected in a complex way by multiple, interacting physical processes. We review common photobioreactor types and discuss the processes occurring therein as well as how these processes have been considered in previous CFD models. The analysis reveals that CFD models of photobioreactors do often not consider state-of-the-art modeling approaches. As a comprehensive photobioreactor model consists of several sub-models, we review the most relevant models for the simulation of fluid flows, light propagation, heat and mass transfer and growth kinetics as well as state-of-the-art models for turbulence and interphase forces, revealing their strength and deficiencies. In addition, we review the population balance equation, breakage and coalescence models and discretization methods since the predicted bubble size distribution critically depends on them. This comprehensive overview of the available models provides a unique toolbox for generating CFD models of photobioreactors. Directions future research should take are also discussed, mainly consisting of an extensive experimental validation of the single models for specific photobioreactor geometries, as well as more complete and sophisticated integrated models by virtue of the constant increase of the computational capacity.

Quantitative analysis on photon numbers received per cell for triggering β-carotene accumulation in Dunaliella salina

Accumulation of β-carotene in Dunaliella salina is highly dependent on light exposure intensity and duration, but quantitative analysis on photon numbers received per cell for triggering β-carotene accumulation is not available so far. In this study, experiment results showed that significant β-carotene accumulation occurred after at least 8 h illumination at 400 µmol photons·m-2·s-1. To quantify the average number of photons received per cell, correlations of light attenuation with light path, biomass concentration, and β-carotene content were, respectively, established using both Lambert-Beer and Cornet models, and the latter provided better simulation. Using Cornet model, average number of photons received per cell (APRPC) was calculated and proposed as a parameter for β-carotene accumulation, and constant APRPC was maintained by adjusting average irradiance based on cell concentration and carotenoids content changes during the whole induction period. It was found that once APRPC reached 0.7 µmol photons cell-1, β-carotene accumulation was triggered, and it was saturated at 9.9 µmol photons cell-1. This study showed that APRPC can be used as an important parameter to precisely simulate and control β-carotene production by D. salina.

A new approach for calculating microalgae culture growth based on an inhibitory effect of the surrounding biomass

Ever since the potential of algae in biotechnology was recognized, models describing the growth of algae inside photobioreactors have been proposed. These models are the basis for the optimization of process conditions and reactor designs. Over the last few decades, models became more and more elaborate with the increase of computational capacity. Thus far, these models have been based on light attenuation due to the absorption and scattering effects of the biomass. This manuscript presents a new way of predicting the apparent growth inside photobioreactors using simple models for enzymatic kinetics to describe the reaction between photons and the photosynthetic unit. The proposed model utilizes an inhibition kinetic formula based on the surrounding biomass to describe the average growth rate of a culture, which is determined by the local light intensities inside the reactor. The result is a mixed-inhibition scheme with multiple inhibition sites. The parameters of the new kinetic equation are replaced by empirical regression functions to correlate their dependency on incident light intensity and reactor size. The calibrations of the parameters and the regression functions are based on the numerical solutions of the growth rate computed with a classical Type II model. As a final verification, we apply the new equation in predicting the growth behavior of three phototrophic organisms in reactors of three different sizes.

Simulation of a Novel Tubular Microalgae Photobioreactor with Aerated Tangent Inner Tubes: Improvements in Mixing Performance and Flashing-Light Effects

At present, large-scale and high-efficiency microalgal cultivation is the key to realizing the technology for carbon capture and storage (CCS) and bioresource recovery. Meanwhile, tubular photobioreactors (PBRs) have great potential for microalgal cultivation due to their high productivity. To improve the mixing performance and flashing-light effect, a novel tube PBR with the inner tube tangential to the outer tube was developed, whose radial aeration pores are situated along the length of the inner tube. The direction of aeration, aeration rate, light/dark cycle period (L/D), light-time ratio, average turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), and degree of synergy between the velocity and direction of the light field in the PBR were optimized by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and field synergy theory. The results show that a downwards aeration direction of 30° and an aeration rate of 0.7 vvm are the most conducive to reducing the dead zone and improving the light/dark cycle frequency. Compared to the concentric double-tube PBR, the light/dark cycle frequency and light time of the tangent double-tube PBR increased by 78.2% and 36.2% to 1.8 Hz and 47.8%, respectively, and the TKE was enhanced by 48.1% from 54 to 80 cm²·s⁻². Meanwhile, field synergy theory can be extended and applied to the design of tubular microalgae PBRs, and the average synergy of the light and velocity gradients across the cross-section increased by 38% to 0.69. The tangential inner tube aeration structure generated symmetrical vertical vortices between the light and dark areas in the PBR, which significantly improved the mixing performance and flashing-light effect. This novel design can provide a more suitable microenvironment for microalgal cultivation and is promising for bioresource recovery applications and improving the yield of microalgae.
