Abstract
This review describes the clinical and pathological features of oxalate nephropathy (ON), defined as a syndrome of decreased renal function associated with deposition of calcium oxalate crystals in kidney tubules. We review the different causes of hyperoxaluria, including primary hyperoxaluria, enteric hyperoxaluria and ingestion-related hyperoxaluria. Recent case series of biopsy-proven ON are reviewed in detail, as well as the implications of these series. The possibility of antibiotic use predisposing to ON is discussed. Therapies for hyperoxaluria and ON are reviewed with an emphasis on newer treatments available and in development. Promising research avenues to explore in this area are discussed.

Abstract
A healthy eating pattern has proven to lower the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. However, there are sparse dietary recommendations for kidney transplant recipients, and the ones available focus only on single nutrients intake, such as sodium, potassium, and proteins, and not on the overall eating pattern. Considering that individuals do not typically consume nutrients in isolation, but as part of a complete dietary pattern, it is challenging for the average transplanted patient to understand and implement specific dietary recommendations. Also, single-nutrient interventions demonstrate largely inconclusive effects, and it seems improbable that they could have a strong enough impact on transplant outcomes. Dietary trends such as plant-based diets, intermittent fasting, low-carb diet/keto-diet, and juicing, have gained major attention from the media. Herein, we review the potential risks and benefits of these diets in kidney transplant recipients and provide an updated dietary recommendation for this population with consideration of current nutritional trends. Overall, the Mediterranean and DASH diets have demonstrated to be the most beneficial dietary patterns to the post kidney transplant population by focusing on less meat and processed foods, while increasing the intake of fresh foods and plant-based choices. We believe that to maintain a healthy lifestyle posttransplant, patients should be educated about the scientific evidence of different diets and choose a dietary pattern that is sustainable long-term.

Abstract
Research background Passion fruit and carrot have a good antioxidant capacity, however, their consumption is low. There is no information on their use in beverages or in processes such as high hydrostatic pressure, which provides the safety of the drink without affecting its quality. Experimental approach In this study the effect of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP; 500 MPa for 250 s at 25 °C) and thermal processing (at 65 °C for 10 min, 75 °C for 2 min and 95 °C for 1 min) were evaluated in the formulation of a cold-pressed beverage from purple passion fruit, green passion fruit and carrot juice, taking into account antioxidant capacity, vitamin C concentration, sensorial evaluation and microbiological growth at 8 °C. Results and conclusions The formulation containing 67% purple passion fruit, 17% green passion fruit and 17% carrot was the one that stood out with its antioxidant capacity, high vitamin C concentration and sensorial evaluation. The HHP treatment preserved the antioxidant capacity and vitamin C concentration, and resulted in the best scent. Juices stored at 8 °C did not show microbial growth. Novelty and scientific contribution In this study, we used tropical raw materials with good sensory acceptance and antioxidant capacity that could be used in the production of high value-added foods. Additionally, the research demonstrated that HHP is a conservation method that maintains the antioxidant capacity, vitamin C and aroma of the beverage to a greater extent compared to thermal treatments; the latter is of interest for its use in minimally processed products and functional food.

Abstract
Calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystal deposition within the tubules is often a perplexing finding on renal biopsy of both native and transplanted kidneys. Understanding the underlying causes may help diagnosis and future management. The most frequent cause of CaOx crystal deposition within the kidney is hyperoxaluria. When this is seen in native kidney biopsy, primary hyperoxaluria must be considered and investigated further with biochemical and genetic tests. Secondary hyperoxaluria, for example due to enteric hyperoxaluria following bariatric surgery, ingested ethylene glycol or vitamin C overdose may also cause CaOx deposition in native kidneys. CaOx deposition is a frequent finding in renal transplant biopsy, often as a consequence of acute tubular necrosis and is associated with poorer long-term graft outcomes. CaOx crystal deposition in the renal transplant may also be secondary to any of the causes associated with this phenotype in the native kidney. The pathophysiology underlying CaOx deposition is complex but this histological phenotype may indicate serious underlying pathology and should always warrant further investigation.

Abstract
The American Cancer Society (ACS) publishes the Diet and Physical Activity Guideline to serve as a foundation for its communication, policy, and community strategies and, ultimately, to affect dietary and physical activity patterns among Americans. This guideline is developed by a national panel of experts in cancer research, prevention, epidemiology, public health, and policy, and reflects the most current scientific evidence related to dietary and activity patterns and cancer risk. The ACS guideline focuses on recommendations for individual choices regarding diet and physical activity patterns, but those choices occur within a community context that either facilitates or creates barriers to healthy behaviors. Therefore, this committee presents recommendations for community action to accompany the 4 recommendations for individual choices to reduce cancer risk. These recommendations for community action recognize that a supportive social and physical environment is indispensable if individuals at all levels of society are to have genuine opportunities to choose healthy behaviors. This 2020 ACS guideline is consistent with guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association for the prevention of coronary heart disease and diabetes as well as for general health promotion, as defined by the 2015 to 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Abstract
The kidney's role in filtration of blood and production of urine occurs via a combination of size and charge filtration at the glomerular basement membrane and resorption and excretion of molecules through a complex tubular system embedded within an ion gradient. This delicate system provides the kidney with a unique propensity for substrate saturation and crystal nucleation within the nephron. While crystalline nephropathies may seem exotic to the uninitiated, they are comprised of easily recognizable morphologies and generally lack complicated classification schemas. Additionally, unlike many intrinsic kidney diseases, crystalline nephropathies are often associated with systemic conditions that, upon further investigation, may elucidate critically important information. This review focuses on practical, diagnostically relevant and high yield information that can be utilized by diagnosticians. Our hope is to equip the reader who reviews renal tissue with a practical toolkit that they feel empowered to use when faced with crystal formation in a kidney biopsy, pre-implantation biopsy, or nephrectomy specimen. Abstract
The growing demand for fruit and vegetable juice blends, with improved nutritional and sensory attributes, has prompted the industrial adoption of nonthermal processing technologies, including UV light. Limited studies have explored conditions to overcome the well-known limitations of UV when treating liquid foods with a high content of particles that absorb or scatter UV light. This study addressed the effectiveness of the application of UV light, using a commercial processing unit, to inactivate pathogenic Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella enterica (hereafter Salmonella), and Listeria monocytogenes, as well as spoilage microorganisms, in colored and turbid juices and beverages. The inactivation of cocktails of five strains (or serotypes) of E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella, and L. monocytogenes isolated from fruit- and vegetable-derived products linked to outbreaks was determined in seven colored and turbid cold-pressed juices and beverages. Juices and beverages were UV treated at a constant flow rate of 150 L/h through multiple consecutive passes. The inactivation of aerobic mesophilic bacteria, molds and yeasts, and lactic acid bacteria was also assessed at the cumulative dose that guaranteed a 5-log reduction of the most UV-tolerant pathogen for each product. A 5-log reduction of the three pathogens was achieved in all juices and beverages at a maximum cumulative UV dose of 12.0 ± 0.6 mJ/cm2. The dose required to ensure the targeted reduction varied depending on the tested product and the inoculated pathogen. The reduction of aerobic mesophiles, molds and yeasts, and lactic acid bacteria varied from 0.5 to 3.6, from 0.2 to 2.0, and from 0.5 to 3.6 log CFU/mL, respectively. Thus, the proposed treatment represents a suitable processing alternative to ensure the safety and extend the shelf life of colored and turbid cold-pressed juices and beverages.

Abstract
Hyperoxaluria is characterized by an increased urinary excretion of oxalate. Primary and secondary hyperoxaluria are two distinct clinical expressions of hyperoxaluria. Primary hyperoxaluria is an inherited error of metabolism due to defective enzyme activity. In contrast, secondary hyperoxaluria is caused by increased dietary ingestion of oxalate, precursors of oxalate or alteration in intestinal microflora. The disease spectrum extends from recurrent kidney stones, nephrocalcinosis and urinary tract infections to chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease. When calcium oxalate burden exceeds the renal excretory ability, calcium oxalate starts to deposit in various organ systems in a process called systemic oxalosis. Increased urinary oxalate levels help to make the diagnosis while plasma oxalate levels are likely to be more accurate when patients develop chronic kidney disease. Definitive diagnosis of primary hyperoxaluria is achieved by genetic studies and if genetic studies prove inconclusive, liver biopsy is undertaken to establish diagnosis. Diagnostic clues pointing towards secondary hyperoxaluria are a supportive dietary history and tests to detect increased intestinal absorption of oxalate. Conservative treatment for both types of hyperoxaluria includes vigorous hydration and crystallization inhibitors to decrease calcium oxalate precipitation. Pyridoxine is also found to be helpful in approximately 30% patients with primary hyperoxaluria type 1. Liver-kidney and isolated kidney transplantation are the treatment of choice in primary hyperoxaluria type 1 and type 2 respectively. Data is scarce on role of transplantation in primary hyperoxaluria type 3 where there are no reports of end stage renal disease so far. There are ongoing investigations into newer modalities of diagnosis and treatment of hyperoxaluria. Clinical differentiation between primary and secondary hyperoxaluria and further between the types of primary hyperoxaluria is very important because of implications in treatment and diagnosis. Hyperoxaluria continues to be a challenging disease and a high index of clinical suspicion is often the first step on the path to accurate diagnosis and management.
